ActRaiser 2, developed by Quintet and published by Enix for Super Nintendo, is a very different sequel from the first ActRaiser. The city-building half is gone. What remains is a demanding side-scrolling platform game about controlling the Master through monster-filled stages with a sword, shield, wings, and limited magic.
The biggest adjustment is that the Master is powerful but heavy. Wings do not turn the game into free flight. Shielding is strong, but only when you are positioned and timed correctly. Magic can erase awkward threats, but each cast spends a limited point. Play ActRaiser 2 like a precise action game, not like a brawler where you can trade hits.
Essential Tips
1. Pick a Difficulty You Can Learn On
The starting lives and magic points change the whole feel.
Easy gives the most room to practice, Medium is the normal baseline, and Hard starts you with fewer lives while enemies hit harder and last longer. If you are new, begin where you can survive long enough to learn movement. There is one major catch: the final Death Heim area is not available on Easy, so players aiming for a complete clear should eventually move beyond it.
2. Treat Wings as Momentum Control
Double-jump wings help you place landings, not hover forever.
After the second jump, choose the wing mode that solves the current platform problem. Holding up helps you float down a shaft or settle onto small footing. Holding left or right carries you farther, but the landing skid can slide you into danger. Holding down dives quickly, which is useful for attacks and fast drops but punishes late decisions.
3. Stop Before You Shield
The shield is strongest when you commit to defense.
The shield can block many projectiles, including arrows in early stages, but it is not a passive guard while you walk and swing. When a shooter is lined up, stop, face the threat, angle the shield if needed, and let the projectile bounce before moving. That one beat of patience often saves more health than trying to rush through.
4. Learn the Magic Inputs as a Small Toolkit
Spells depend on what the Master is doing when you release.
Hold the attack button after a sword swing until the charge is ready, then release while standing, holding a direction, jumping, floating, gliding, or diving. Standing still gives a simple flame. Holding up launches energy balls. Holding down creates a close-range spark. Jumping creates frost shots. Floating, gliding, and diving each create different advanced attacks. Practice the input before you need it in a boss room.
5. Spend MP on Problems, Not Panic
Every spell costs a point, so make each cast solve something.
Magic is limited at the start of each stage, and although drops can refill you, you should not assume a refill will appear before the next hard section. Use MP when a boss pattern is open, when a dangerous enemy blocks a narrow space, or when a spell clearly reaches safer than the sword. Random panic casts usually leave you empty later.
6. Break Light Orbs and Item Containers
Small pickups are part of the survival route.
ActRaiser 2 is stingy enough that passing obvious containers is rarely worth the seconds saved. Light orbs and containers can hold the health, MP, or extra life help that keeps a stage attempt alive. If grabbing one requires a risky platform move, clear nearby enemies first, then take it with a controlled float or glide.
7. Use the Sky Palace to Read the Map Calmly
Stage entry starts from the world map, not from a town-building loop.
Move the Sky Palace over a location when you are ready to descend. The game can open areas in clusters rather than one rigid straight line, so do not assume the first available stage is always the only path. If a stage feels too punishing, check whether another open area gives you better practice before returning.
8. Fight Bosses From Their Recovery Windows
Most safe damage comes after avoiding a pattern.
The sword is short, and dives can put you directly into contact damage if you get greedy. Watch the boss pattern, move around the attack, then strike when it turns, lands, or finishes a charge. Magic is best used during these same openings, especially when the spell can hit while you stay outside the body hitbox.
9. Respect Contact Damage
Touching enemies is often worse than missing an attack.
The Master’s large sprite and landing skid make close-range mistakes expensive. If an enemy is on a ledge, it is usually better to stop short, block or bait its shot, and cut it down from a stable spot. Jumping directly into a body to land one sword swing often costs more than the enemy was worth.
10. Save Advanced Tricks for Later
Password oddities and extreme challenges are not beginner goals.
The normal game already asks a lot from movement, blocking, and spell timing. Learn the intended Easy, Medium, or Hard structure before chasing unusual password states or challenge-route behavior. Those belong in a separate secrets or challenge article, not in a first clear plan.
Movement and Combat Priorities
| Situation | Best Habit | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Long drop | Hold up during wing movement | Gives time to line up the landing |
| Wide gap | Glide with room to skid | Covers distance without overshooting a tiny ledge |
| Low projectile | Stop and shield | Avoids health loss without spending MP |
| Crowded ledge | Clear enemies before jumping | Prevents contact damage on landing |
| Boss opening | Strike once or cast cleanly | Reduces greedy follow-up damage |
| Low MP | Favor sword and shield | Keeps spells ready for forced danger |
| Item container nearby | Secure the area first | Makes the pickup safer than rushing |
Movement is the main skill check. A good jump in ActRaiser 2 is not just reaching the other side; it is landing with enough control to block, swing, or jump again. When a platform is narrow, choose float over glide. When a gap is wide, start the glide early and expect the skid. When a dive attack looks tempting, ask whether the landing area is clear.
Combat is similar. The sword can hit high, low, or forward, but it does not make you invincible. The shield covers many projectile problems without using MP, but only if you pause and face the shot. Magic is the burst option, not the default answer. This rhythm keeps your health and MP from bleeding away before the end of a stage.
Stage Progression Plan
ActRaiser 2’s stages are built around themed areas and two-part problems rather than city management. Each area sends the Master into action stages, and later stages become more demanding with enemy placement, hazards, and bosses. Early areas are the place to master the basics: shield arrows, float across uneven platforms, break containers, and learn when a glide will skid too far.
Do not rush every available location just because the Sky Palace lets you move freely. Start a stage with a small goal: reach the midpoint with more health than last time, learn one enemy group, or save one extra MP for the boss. If you lose a life, remember where the damage came from. Most mistakes repeat until you deliberately slow that section down.
Difficulty also changes planning. On lower settings, extra lives and MP let you experiment. On higher settings, the same stage becomes a route you must execute cleanly. If a Hard attempt falls apart early, replay the stage on an easier setting to rehearse movement, then return when the sequence is familiar.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not play it like the first ActRaiser - There is no city-building layer to recover from sloppy action play.
-
Do not glide onto tiny platforms without room - The landing skid can carry you off the edge.
-
Do not swing while expecting the shield to save you - Guarding requires a defensive pause.
-
Do not spend MP just because the charge is ready - A spell should remove a real threat or punish a boss opening.
-
Do not ignore item containers - Health, MP, and life pickups can decide long stages.
-
Do not dive into enemies blindly - Contact damage can erase the benefit of a single hit.
-
Do not stay on Easy forever if you want the full ending route - Death Heim is locked away there.
-
Do not treat every open stage as equally beginner-friendly - Try another available area if one route is blocking basic practice.

| Magic | Memorize release conditions and spend MP deliberately |
| Items | Break containers when the area is safe |
