Advance Wars: Days of Ruin Tips - CO Zones, Bikes, and Fog

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin tips for CO Zones, Bikes, fog, terrain, unit veterancy, factories, ports, airports, and campaign play.

On this page

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is a colder, more restrained Nintendo DS strategy game than earlier Advance Wars entries. It still rewards capturing properties, protecting damaged units, and building the right counter, but CO Zones, unit veterancy, Bikes, Rigs, new terrain, and fog rules make old habits risky.

This guide focuses on the original Nintendo DS game. Advance Wars: Dark Conflict is the regional Europe and Australia title for the same game, so treat name changes as localization differences.

Essential Tips

1. Win The Property Race Early

Your first turns should usually be about income, not combat. Infantry and Bikes capture cities, factories, airports, ports, and HQs; those properties fund the army that wins later. A Bike is especially valuable because it moves farther than basic infantry while still capturing, which lets it reach distant properties before slower foot units.

Do not send capture units into danger just because they are fast. If a Bike starts capturing where a tank, recon, or artillery can punish it, you may lose both the unit and the tempo. Screen the route and let capture units work behind cover.

2. Build Answers, Not Favorites

Days of Ruin rewards combined arms. Capture units secure properties, direct-combat vehicles hold the front, indirect units punish from range, and anti-air or missile units answer aircraft. Naval units matter only when the map gives water control enough value.

Before spending funds, inspect what the enemy can build and what is already on the board. An expensive unit is wasteful when a cheaper counter solves the immediate threat.

3. Use CO Zones As Frontline Tools

COs no longer passively empower the army from the start. A CO must board a unit, and that unit projects a limited zone. Units in that zone gain attack and defense, and the zone expands as the CO meter fills.

The CO unit should be close enough to matter but durable enough to survive. A tank is often practical on ground-heavy maps because it can fight, move with the line, and avoid the risk of pricier platforms.

4. Do Not Rush Every CO Power

When the meter fills, the CO Power can swing a turn, but chasing it can distort your positioning. A CO unit that dives too far forward may get destroyed, resetting the meter.

Use the zone bonus as steady pressure first. Spend the power when it helps capture a key area, break a stalemate, save a damaged front, or finish a decisive attack.

5. Preserve Promoted Units During The Map

Units gain levels by destroying enemies during the current battle. A leveled tank, artillery piece, or anti-air unit can become a valuable anchor because higher levels improve combat performance.

Do not treat veterancy like a reason to overextend. A strong unit still loses firepower as HP drops, and a nearly destroyed veteran may be better joined, repaired, or pulled back.

6. Let Terrain Shape The Fight

Cover is not decorative. Woods, ruins, cities, mountains, and other terrain can change whether a unit survives the counterattack. Roads are fast but exposed; mountains help foot units see farther in fog; wasteland slows many ground vehicles.

Whenever possible, end turns where important units gain defense, block an approach, or force the enemy to attack from a worse tile. A small terrain edge often matters more than one extra square.

7. Scout Before Moving Expensive Units

Fog of war punishes careless advances. Woods and ruins can hide ground units, and an unseen attacker can ruin a clean-looking advance. Use units with good vision, infantry or bazooka units on mountains, and cautious movement to reveal threats before you commit a CO unit or expensive vehicle.

If the map is dark, move in layers: scout first, screen second, then attack with the main force. Ending blind beside unknown terrain is an easy way to lose momentum.

8. Respect Factories, Ports, and Airports

Factories win most ground wars because they keep units flowing. Airports matter when fighters, bombers, copters, or dusters can reach key fronts. Ports matter when landers, gunboats, battleships, cruisers, carriers, or submarines can actually influence objectives.

Capture production buildings before nearby neutral cities when the map allows it. A front factory or airport can be worth more than distant income because it shortens reinforcement time.

9. Use Rigs For Position, Not Just Supply

Rigs replace the older APC role and can create temporary air or sea facilities. They also keep units supplied, which matters on long maps where fuel and ammo begin to bite.

Bring a Rig when the map asks you to maintain pressure away from permanent properties. Keep it behind the front line so it can continue supporting the advance.

10. Practice In Free Battle

Story Mode teaches the campaign, but Free Battle is where you can test CO placement, fog movement, and production choices without waiting for a specific chapter. It also helps you learn regional name differences if you are comparing Days of Ruin and Dark Conflict materials.

Use small maps to practice opening captures and larger maps to practice layered fronts. Make good habits automatic before the campaign demands them.

Battle Plan

A strong battle plan has three phases. First, capture efficiently. Send infantry and Bikes toward nearby properties, but screen them once enemies approach. Second, stabilize the front. Build counters, place indirect units where they cover contested tiles, and avoid roads when better terrain is nearby.

Third, convert pressure into a win condition. If the enemy HQ is reachable, escort a capture unit and force a response. If the map favors annihilation, remove production threats and join or repair damaged units before pushing. In special campaign objectives, build around the objective first.

Do not confuse fighting with progress. Destroying units matters most when it opens a capture, protects income, removes a production threat, or lets your CO Zone advance safely.

CO Zone Priorities

The CO Zone is strongest when it covers several useful units. Place the CO unit near the main line, then attack from inside the zone to build meter while benefiting from the boost.

Choose the host carefully. A tank is flexible. A cheap infantry can be clever, but it may struggle to keep up or survive. Expensive units create high-risk targets. Hidden naval units may reveal too much once the zone appears.

Keep the CO unit close to repair options when possible. Losing it also loses meter progress and zone pressure.

Fog, Terrain, and Vision

Fog maps ask for patience. Lead with units that have useful vision, while infantry and bazooka units on mountains extend what you can see. Woods and ruins can hide units until they are revealed.

Move scouts before tanks, CO units, or transports. If a route passes through woods, assume something can be waiting there until checked. When you find the enemy, sometimes the better turn is to stop outside range, cover the approach, and punish its move.

Terrain also affects movement. Wasteland slows vehicles, rivers block most ground units, and roads offer speed without protection. Plan around how long units will actually take to arrive.

Modes and Online Status

Story Mode has 26 missions and additional training missions, and completed campaign missions can be replayed. Free Battle lets you fight AI or same-system players and test maps outside the campaign.

The original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection features for Nintendo DS and DSi software are no longer active. Treat online battles, matchmaking, leaderboards, and official online map sharing as historical. Offline campaign play, local play, Free Battle, and created-map practice remain the practical focus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not skip early captures - An army without income falls behind even if its first attacks look good.

  2. Do not expose Bikes alone - Fast capture units still fold when vehicles or indirect attacks catch them.

  3. Do not board a CO into the priciest unit by default - A costly host can become a painful target.

  4. Do not chase CO meter at the expense of position - A destroyed CO unit resets the progress you were building.

  5. Do not waste promoted units - Pull back, repair, or join valuable units before their low HP erases their advantage.

  6. Do not fight from roads when cover is available - Better terrain can decide close exchanges.

  7. Do not move expensive units first in fog - Scout before committing tanks, transports, aircraft, or CO units.

  8. Do not ignore production buildings - A forward factory, airport, or port can matter more than distant income.

  9. Do not build naval or air units just because you can - Match production to the map’s objectives and threats.

  10. Do not apply Re-Boot Camp habits blindly - Days of Ruin has its own CO, unit, and terrain rules.
