Arma 3 is a military sandbox developed and published by Bohemia Interactive. This guide is for new players trying to understand the base game, official DLC, Creator DLC, Steam Workshop mods, the Launcher, multiplayer servers, and the difference between Arma 3 and Arma Reforger.
Content warning: Steam flags Arma 3 for frequent/intense violence, bad language, and general mature content. This guide keeps combat discussion non-graphic and focused on game systems.
This is not a loadout guide, faction table, mission walkthrough, server ranking, modpack list, or milsim tactics manual. Confirm exact server rules, mod dependencies, branch versions, platform support, and DLC ownership in the live client, Steam, and the server’s own instructions.
Current-state note: Steam lists Windows and Mac client support for app 107410, while the current official version context is around main version 2.20 and Release Candidate testing for Update 2.22. Check the live client and Launcher before changing branches or joining a server.
Essential Tips
1. Start With Bootcamp Before Multiplayer
Arma 3 assumes you will learn systems, not just aim better.
Use Bootcamp, VR Training, showcases, and controlled scenarios to learn movement, interaction, vehicles, command basics, and the interface before joining a live server. A quiet training space is a better first hour than a modded server with unfamiliar rules and missing dependencies.
2. Treat Every Scenario as Its Own Ruleset
Arma 3 is a platform as much as a campaign.
The base game includes campaigns, scenarios, showcases, challenges, Virtual Arsenal/Garage, editor-made missions, official multiplayer modes, Zeus sessions, and community content. Before starting, read the scenario description and check whether it expects solo play, co-op, PvP, Zeus, specific DLC, or a mod preset.
3. Use the Virtual Arsenal to Learn the Interface
Practice the menus before you need them under pressure.
Virtual Arsenal and Garage are useful for understanding equipment categories, vehicle roles, and interface flow without committing to a mission. Keep this as menu practice, not as permission to chase a universal best loadout.
4. Keep Your First Mod List Small
Most launch problems come from mixing too much too soon.
Steam Workshop can add scenarios, weapons, vehicles, modes, and systems. Subscribe to only what a scenario or server asks for, then test that set before adding more. If something breaks, a small Launcher preset is much easier to inspect.
5. Manage Mods in the Launcher
Subscribed does not always mean loaded for the session you want.
Workshop 101 points players to the Arma 3 Launcher MODS tab after subscribing. Use checkboxes, presets, and the server’s listed requirements to control what is loaded. Keep separate presets for vanilla play, one-off scenarios, and each regular server.
6. Read Server Requirements Before Joining
The server browser is part of the setup process.
Use filters for game mode, terrain, player count, difficulty, and server status, then check mod requirements before connecting. Some servers can help detect or download Workshop content, but do not assume every server has complete automatic dependency handling.
7. Separate Base Game From Official DLC
Store package names and ownership rules matter.
Steam currently says Arma 3 includes Apex and Contact, while Platinum includes the base game and official expansion/DLC set. Treat that as current store context, not a permanent rule. Check the exact product page before buying or joining content-gated missions.
8. Separate Creator DLC From Ordinary Mods
Creator DLC is third-party paid content published by Bohemia.
Creator DLC is made by external developers, published by Bohemia Interactive, and installed differently from regular official DLC. Non-owners may have Workshop compatibility data for some multiplayer cases, but terrains and non-owned content can still be restricted.
9. Do Not Import Reforger Advice Into Arma 3
Arma Reforger is a separate game and platform.
Reforger uses Enfusion, Workbench, and its own platform/mod ecosystem. Arma 3 uses the RV4-era Arma 3 toolchain, Steam Workshop flow, and Launcher behavior. Reforger server, console, and modding advice should not be treated as Arma 3 advice.
10. Verify Branch and Version Advice
Arma 3 can have main, RC, server, and Creator DLC branch context.
If a guide, server, or mod tells you to use a specific branch, verify it in Steam and the Launcher before changing anything.
11. Learn With Official Content Before Joining a Unit
Community groups often add expectations beyond the base game.
Arma 3 has long-running community units and dedicated multiplayer scenes. Join those only after you understand the install flow, voice/comms expectations, server rules, and mod preset. This guide does not provide real-world tactical doctrine or unit procedures.
12. Keep Screenshots of Your Working Setup
A known-good preset saves troubleshooting time.
When a server or scenario finally launches correctly, save the preset and capture the mod list/version context. If a future Workshop update or branch change causes problems, you have a practical reference point.
Content and Ownership
| Category | What It Means | Check Before Playing |
|---|---|---|
| Base Steam app | Arma 3 app 107410 and current included package contents | Current Steam package, platform flags, install size |
| Official DLC | Bohemia-developed expansions/DLC and platform updates | Ownership, bundle contents, mission requirements |
| Creator DLC | Third-party content published by Bohemia | Optional data install, owner restrictions, compatibility item |
| Workshop scenario | Community mission or composition | Required DLC, required mods, player count, mode |
| Workshop mod | Community addon, framework, asset pack, or mode | Dependencies, load order, server preset, update date |
| Arma Reforger | Separate Enfusion-based Arma game | Do not use Reforger instructions for Arma 3 |
Mods, Launcher, and Servers
| Situation | Best First Habit | Avoid This |
|---|---|---|
| Trying a single scenario | Subscribe only to listed requirements | Adding a broad mod collection immediately |
| Joining a public server | Check mode, terrain, difficulty, player count, and mods | Assuming every server is vanilla-compatible |
| Using Creator DLC | Confirm ownership or compatibility data | Treating it like a normal free Workshop mod |
| Switching servers | Use separate Launcher presets | Loading every subscribed mod at once |
| Reading old advice | Check date, branch, DLC, and mod context | Following old UI/version steps blindly |
| Troubleshooting | Reproduce with the smallest needed preset | Changing branch, mods, and parameters all at once |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not skip Bootcamp and training - Arma 3’s interface and scenario variety are easier to learn before multiplayer pressure.
-
Do not assume every mission is vanilla - Scenarios and servers may depend on DLC, Creator DLC, Workshop mods, or specific branch context.
-
Do not load every subscribed mod - More loaded addons mean more dependency and compatibility variables.
-
Do not treat Creator DLC as ordinary Workshop content - It has separate ownership, install, compatibility, and terrain-access rules.
-
Do not buy DLC from an old checklist - Store bundles and included expansions can change, so check the current product page.
-
Do not follow Reforger setup guides for Arma 3 - Reforger is a separate game with a different engine, tools, platforms, and mod flow.
-
Do not assume the Launcher fixes every server mismatch - It can help with mods and filters, but server-specific instructions still matter.
-
Do not join a community unit without reading its requirements - Rules, voice tools, attendance, and mod presets vary by group.
-
Do not treat old version advice as current - Main branch, RC branch, server tools, and Creator DLC updates can move independently.
-
Do not use this guide as tactical instruction - It covers game onboarding and setup, not real-world military procedures.
