Beyond Good & Evil HD is a compact action-adventure, but it rewards players who treat Jade as a reporter first and a fighter second. The main story is approachable for beginners; the stricter part is cleanup, because HD achievement goals touch photos, pearls, races, looters, Mdisks, hearts, minigames, and several missable moments.
This guide covers the HD release. The later 20th Anniversary Edition has its own added modes and convenience features, so do not assume those tools exist here. Expect manual saving at Mdisk readers, deliberate photo checks, and careful cleanup before the final trip away from Hillys.
Essential Tips
1. Use the Camera Before You Use the Staff
Jade’s camera is not a side activity. Animal photos build your Unit income, fill film rolls, and support achievement progress, while some creatures appear during missions or fights. When you enter a new room, see a new enemy, or spot wildlife around the Lighthouse, Black Isle, the city, or a guarded facility, pause long enough to check the lens.
This habit is especially important because combat can remove the chance to photograph a creature cleanly. If a boss, guard, or strange animal is new, take the picture first, then fight. You will save yourself from late-game backtracking and avoid wondering which species you missed.
2. Save Manually Whenever You Reach an Mdisk Reader
HD is not the later anniversary release with modern convenience assumptions. Save by using an Mdisk reader and playing the Save Game Mdisk. Make that part of your route rhythm: enter a new hub, save; finish a report, save; buy a major upgrade, save; before a race, minigame, or suspicious one-way route, save again.
Manual saves matter because the completion path has missable achievement goals. The story is friendly enough, but cleanup is easier when you can roll back from a bad bet, a sloppy stealth section, or a missed photo opportunity.
3. Treat Pearls as Progression, Not Spare Cash
Pearls are collectibles, but they also buy vehicle upgrades at Mammago Garage. That makes them part of the main progression economy. If you ignore pearl routes, you delay hovercraft upgrades and make later areas feel more awkward than they need to be.
Spend with the upgrade chain in mind. The hovercraft starts as transport, then becomes a gate opener for races, looters, sea travel, and late cleanup. When the game points you toward Mammago, think about what movement or combat problem the next upgrade solves instead of hoarding pearls just to watch the number rise.
4. Buy the Animal and Pearl Detectors Early
Once Ming-Tzu’s shop is available, make the Animal Detector and Pearl Detector high priorities. They turn the map into a cleanup tool by marking new animals and pearls, which is much better than sweeping every district from memory.
The detectors do not replace attention. Some rewards come from fights, minigames, purchases, or mission progress rather than obvious map markers. Use detectors to guide your route, then keep your own short checklist for photos, races, looters, Mdisks, and pearls earned from events.
This is also a good time to tidy your shopping habits. Units can disappear quickly if you buy healing supplies after every small mistake. Keep enough recovery for missions, but remember that shop money also helps with special items and upgrades. A careful photo route makes those purchases easier.
5. Keep Healing Items Mostly for Jade
Jade’s health grows through PA 1 items, while Starkos restore one heart and K-Bups restore all hearts. Companions may ask for healing, but they usually handle themselves well enough that spending your supplies on Jade is the better default.
That does not mean you should play recklessly. Dodge in combat, crouch in stealth areas, and use partner actions only when the room is asking for them. Good item discipline makes long missions smoother because you are not entering the next fight with empty pockets.
6. Play Stealth Sections Slowly
Alpha Sections areas are not brawls by default. Crouching, watching guard routes, and using cover will often do more for you than rushing into staff range. Some cleanup routes involve sneaking past guards after trap-heavy paths, so learning the timing early pays off later.
When you do need to fight, use Jade’s dodge and attack rhythm instead of button mashing. Once gyrodiscs are available, remember that aiming mode is useful for more than photography. It lets you handle ranged targets while keeping Jade out of bad positions.
7. Plan Around the Achievement Thresholds
HD does not require a perfect file for every achievement, but it does ask for a broad spread of tasks. The important targets include 80 pearls, six animal-photo rolls, 10 hearts, 11 Mdisks, four looters, four hovercraft race wins, minigame wins against Francis and Peepers, hovercraft power, the spaceship trip, and story completion.
That spread is why a beginner should play steadily rather than sprinting through story chapters. After each major report or new travel upgrade, do a quick pass through available hubs, shop options, and race or looter opportunities. Small cleanup passes are easier than one giant hunt at the end.
If you only want to finish the story, you can play more loosely. If you want a cleaner achievement run, act like each chapter has a small checklist: new photos, new shop stock, new pearl routes, then the next main objective. That mindset keeps the game relaxed while still protecting the file.
8. Separate Hillys Cleanup From the Space Trip
Before leaving Hillys for the late space sequence, make a dedicated cleanup save and check your remaining goals. A full route can have almost everything handled before space, with the last animal photo coming during the trip after freeing the huge creature from ice.
Even if you are not chasing every item, this is the moment to slow down. Check pearls, PA 1s, Meca-Impulsers, Mdisks, detector markers, races, and looters. If something obvious is still unfinished, handle it before the story narrows your focus.
The safest approach is to keep two late saves: one before your final Hillys sweep and one after you are satisfied with it. That gives you a clean return point if you later notice that a race, animal, or shop item was left behind.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not fight new creatures before photographing them - Photos are part of the economy and completion route, so take the shot first whenever a creature looks new.
- Do not rely on automatic progress saves - Use Mdisk readers regularly, especially before minigames, races, major purchases, and late story movement.
- Do not spend the whole game without detectors - Ming-Tzu’s tools make animal and pearl cleanup much less frustrating.
- Do not treat pearls like optional trophies - Pearls buy Mammago upgrades, and those upgrades shape your hovercraft and late route options.
- Do not waste Jade’s best healing on companions by habit - Keep most recovery items for Jade unless a room clearly demands otherwise.
- Do not rush Alpha Sections patrols - Crouch, watch routes, and move after guards commit to their patterns.
- Do not leave every race, looter, and minigame for the finale - Spread those tasks between story beats so the ending is not a checklist wall.
- Do not assume anniversary-edition conveniences exist in HD - Treat autosave, cutscene skipping, and newer modes as features for another version.
