Black Myth: Wukong, developed and published by Game Science, is a single-player action RPG based on Journey to the West. You play as the Destined One, fight through boss-heavy chapters, and build your combat plan around staff stances, Focus, spells, transformations, Spirits, gear, and gourd upgrades.
Content note: Official storefronts list Teen / 13+ descriptors for Violence, Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity, and Language. This guide keeps combat discussion non-graphic and focused on player actions.
Difficulty caveat: this is a beginner guide, not an easy-mode route. The game does not offer adjustable difficulty, and many walls are boss or route knowledge checks. The goal is to avoid wasting Sparks, materials, gourd upgrades, and cleanup progress while you learn the fights.

Essential Tips
1. Explore Before Blaming the Boss
A hard wall often means you skipped tools, not that you need a perfect run.
Black Myth: Wukong is mostly linear, but areas can branch into optional bosses, side quests, collectibles, materials, upgrades, and secret spaces. If a boss feels far above your current damage or survivability, step away, check side paths, upgrade what you can, and come back with a better kit.
2. Use Every Keeper’s Shrine Menu
Shrines are more than checkpoints.
Resting restores you and replenishes the gourd, but shrines also handle fast travel, Sparks, spell loadouts, Spirit cultivation, crafting, brewing, stores, medicine crafting, challenge modes, and bonus item claims. Before leaving a shrine, check whether you can improve a staff, armor piece, drink, soak, Spirit, or talent setup.
3. Respec Sparks Freely
Early Spark choices are experiments, not permanent damage.
Use Self-Advance at a shrine to refund and reallocate Sparks when a setup is not helping. If a boss punishes slow charge attacks, try a different stance or survivability node. If you need stronger burst, move Sparks into the tools you are actually using in that fight.
4. Treat the Staff as Several Weapons
Your weapon type is always staff, but your stance changes the job.
Smash, Pillar, and Thrust stances each have their own skill direction. Do not force one stance through every enemy just because it carried the last fight. Swap when the arena, enemy movement, or your own timing makes a different heavy attack pattern safer.
5. Build Focus, Then Spend It Intentionally
Heavy attacks are strongest when you have earned the opening.
Light attacks and good dodging help build Focus, then Focus-powered heavy attacks and varied combos turn openings into real damage or stagger pressure. Avoid dumping a heavy attack into a boss that is already moving out of range or winding up a punish.
6. Dodge First, Parry Later
Your reliable opening defense is movement.
Perfect dodges and clean spacing are core survival habits. Rock Solid and other timing tools can become strong later, but beginners should not stand still waiting for a parry option they have not unlocked, equipped, or practiced.
7. Time Spells Instead of Panic-Casting
Interrupted spells waste your best windows.
Immobilize, Cloud Step, A Pluck of Many, Rock Solid, transformations, and other spells are powerful because they create or exploit openings. Cast them before the boss is already hitting you, and do not spend every cooldown at once unless you have a real damage window.
8. Use Transformations as a Planned Phase
A transformation is not just an emergency heal button.
Transformations have their own attacks, health, and Might flow. Use them when you can actually land damage, push a stagger, apply a useful Bane, or survive a dangerous phase. If you transform while the boss is untargetable or running away, you burn Might for little value.
9. Equip Spirits and Upgrade Selectively
Spirit Skills are burst tools with upgrade limits.
Test Spirits as you earn them, but do not assume every Spirit deserves rare materials. A single playthrough before New Game+ does not support fully upgrading everything, so invest in Spirits you can reliably land and that fit the fights you are struggling with.
10. Keep Your Gourd Setup Current
Healing is a build system, not just a flask count.
Gourds, drinks, and soaks can change how your healing supports a fight. Visit Brew when you find new options, and upgrade eligible gourds when you have the materials. A better gourd setup can matter more than squeezing one more risky attack into a boss phase.
11. Craft With a Chapter Plan
Materials are progress, so spend them on gear you will use.
Most weapons are staffs, but crafted staffs and armor pieces change stats, effects, and set bonuses. Upgrade for the fights ahead instead of crafting every new item immediately. If a material looks rare, hold it until you know which weapon or armor path you want.
12. Clean Up Before New Game+
Do not start a new cycle just because the credits rolled.
After the final boss, continuing lets you return before the end and revisit areas for cleanup. Starting New Game+ can overwrite the previous cycle’s cleanup state, so handle bosses, quests, equipment, collectibles, and secret areas first if completion matters.
Combat and Build Habits
| Situation | Safer Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| New boss | Spend the first attempt watching range, delays, and punish windows | You need timings before you need a perfect build |
| Low Focus | Use light attacks, safe dodges, and short strings | Focus-powered heavies need a real setup |
| Spell ready | Cast when the boss is committed or before entering pressure | Reduces wasted cooldowns and interruptions |
| Transformation ready | Use it during a damageable phase | Might runs out, so uptime matters |
| Spirit ready | Save it for a clean punish or stagger window | A missed Spirit Skill wastes Qi |
| Low healing | Recheck gourd, drink, soak, and medicine options | Healing setup can solve more than raw damage |
| Stuck route | Explore, craft, respec, or try another boss | The game rewards preparation between walls |
Shrines, Exploration, and Cleanup
-
Rest with intent: Resting restores you and refills the gourd, but normal enemies respawn. Use it when you need resources, upgrades, travel, or a deliberate reset.
-
Use Travel often: Fast travel between discovered shrines helps you revisit stores, side paths, secret areas, and missed upgrades without replaying a full chapter on foot.
-
Check Self-Advance after tough fights: New Sparks, spells, and Spirit upgrades can change the next boss more than raw repetition.
-
Visit stores in new chapters and secret areas: Shrine store inventory can vary by chapter or location, so do not assume the first shop is the whole game.
-
Track completion through the Journal: Use the Journal as your broad cleanup anchor before chasing 100% guides, trophies, or all bosses.
-
Do side content during the story: Optional bosses, quests, secret areas, and materials can make later fights smoother.
-
Delay exact 100% routing: Full completion needs a dedicated route guide. This beginner guide keeps you from locking yourself into New Game+ too early.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not run straight from boss to boss - You miss upgrades, Spirits, side quests, materials, and shrine options that make the next fight easier.
-
Do not ignore the shrine menus - Fast travel, respecs, crafting, brewing, medicine, stores, and Spirit upgrades all live there.
-
Do not hoard Sparks in a bad build - Refund and reallocate when your current setup is not solving the fight.
-
Do not force one stance into every enemy - Change stance when range, timing, or arena shape calls for a different heavy attack plan.
-
Do not spend Focus into empty space - Wait for the boss to commit before using your strongest heavy attacks.
-
Do not panic-cast every spell at once - Stagger your cooldowns so you still have tools for the next phase.
-
Do not transform during downtime - Use transformations when the boss can actually be hit and Might will convert into damage.
-
Do not upgrade every Spirit evenly - Pick Spirit Skills you can land and save scarce upgrade materials for those.
-
Do not leave your gourd unchanged for chapters - New drinks, soaks, and upgrades can change survivability.
-
Do not enter New Game+ before cleanup - Finish the bosses, quests, equipment, collectibles, and secret areas you care about first.
