Bomber Man II Beginner Tips and Tricks

Bomber Man II beginner tips for exits, power-ups, enemy traps, bonus stages, and safer bombing in the NES maze-action game.

On this page

Bomber Man II is an NES maze-action game by Hudson Soft. Many players know it as Bomberman II, and the European release is also known as Dynablaster. The names change by region, but the basic challenge stays the same: clear enemies, dig through soft blocks, uncover the exit, and avoid letting your own bomb plan turn against you.

This is a beginner guide for normal play. It focuses on habits that help across the full set of areas instead of listing every password or every room layout.

Essential Tips

1. Clear Space Before You Hunt

Bomber Man II begins with tight movement and weak bombs, so your first job is usually not to chase enemies. Open a few safe lanes near your starting area, then use those lanes as escape routes. A clear lane lets you drop a bomb, step away, and still react if an enemy changes direction.

Do not carve randomly through every block at once. Open the maze in controlled strips. If you create too many crossings early, enemies can enter from more angles, and a simple trap can become a chase through your own blast zones.

2. Treat the Exit Like a Hazard Until the Room Is Safe

The exit is hidden under a soft block, and it only becomes useful after the enemies are gone. Once you reveal it, protect it. A blast on the exit can create extra enemies, which is one of the easiest ways to turn a nearly finished stage into a loss.

When you find the door early, stop bombing around it unless you have a clear reason. Clear the remaining enemies from the other side of the room, then come back when the path is calm.

3. Protect Every Hidden Item

Each stage has one hidden item, and several of them matter more than a quick shortcut through blocks. Bomb upgrades and firepower upgrades are especially important because they improve your long-term room control. Remote detonation, pass-through items, speed, and timed blast protection can also change how safely you move.

The key habit is simple: when an item appears, collect it before placing another bomb nearby. If a flame hits the item, you lose it and may have to deal with an extra enemy.

4. Use Bombs as Walls, Not Just Attacks

A placed bomb blocks movement until it explodes. That can be dangerous when you trap yourself, but it is also your best tool for shaping enemy movement. Drop bombs at the mouth of a corridor, then stand outside the blast line so an enemy has to walk into the explosion or turn away.

Early on, one bomb and short range are enough if you think of the bomb as temporary terrain. Wait for enemies to enter narrow passages, then close the passage behind them.

5. Build Around Persistent Upgrades

Bomb count and blast length are your foundation. More bombs let you control multiple lanes, while stronger fire lets one placement cover longer corridors. Because these upgrades can carry forward after mistakes, they are worth prioritizing over points.

Once your blast length improves, slow down. Longer flames make enemy traps easier, but they also make door and item accidents more likely. Count tiles mentally before placing bombs near anything valuable.

6. Respect the Timer Without Rushing

Every stage is timed, but panic bombing usually wastes more time than it saves. The timer should push you toward efficient routes, not reckless ones. Clear a safe work area, look for the item and exit, then finish the remaining enemies with planned traps.

If the room is large or scrolls horizontally, do not spend the whole stage polishing the first half. Leave yourself enough time to scout the far side and return safely to the door.

7. Learn Enemy Movement Before Closing In

Bomber Man II adds enemy patterns as you progress. Some enemies move in straight lines, some pass through blocks, some chase when close, some move erratically, and some can create bomb-like danger of their own. The right response is not the same for all of them.

Against simple movers, narrow corridors are enough. Against enemies that pass through blocks or teleport, keep more distance and avoid standing beside soft blocks you have not cleared. Against chasers, use their aggression by leading them into a corridor you already prepared.

8. Save Remote Bombs for Clean Setups

Remote detonation is powerful because it removes the normal fuse wait. It also makes sloppy play easier to punish. When you can trigger bombs manually, set traps from a safe square and detonate only after the target is committed.

Do not mash detonation as soon as a bomb is down. The advantage is timing. Let enemies move into the blast line, check your own route, then fire.

Power-Up Priorities

Bomb Stock Up and Firepower Up should usually beat score items in importance. They make every later stage easier by giving you more coverage and better lane control. Speed Up is also valuable, but extra speed can be awkward if you are not used to stopping exactly outside a blast.

Remote Control is one of the strongest safety tools once you use it patiently. It lets you place a bomb where an enemy will cross and wait for the perfect moment. Wall Pass and Bomb Pass are movement upgrades, but they do not make you immune to careless blast placement. Use them to escape crowded spaces, not to stand in danger longer.

The Fire Suit items are temporary protection from bomb blasts. They are best used to take space, escape a risky position, or clear blocks quickly while the protection lasts. When the effect ends, go back to normal caution.

Stage Flow

A steady stage plan looks like this: open a safe pocket, find the item if possible, identify the exit without damaging it, thin out enemies through corridors, then leave once the room is clear. This order keeps your biggest risks separated. You do not want to discover the door, destroy the item, and release extra enemies all in the same crowded corner.

On two-screen stages, think in halves. Clear enough of the first half to move freely, then scout the second half before the timer becomes a problem. If you over-clear one side, you may run out of time while the last enemies are still across the map.

When a room feels chaotic, retreat to a lane you understand. Bomberman is strongest when enemies enter predictable paths. You do not need to win every chase in the open.

Bonus and Multiplayer Habits

Stage 6 in each area can lead to a bonus stage if you collect the bonus item and then finish the level. In bonus stages, the goal is to destroy as many enemies as possible within the limit, and extra-life Bombermen can appear. Play aggressively there, but still move with purpose so you do not waste time chasing enemies away from blast lanes.

In Vs Mode and Battle Mode, the same bombing rules become more psychological. Do not only watch your opponent; watch the lanes they are creating. A player with better firepower controls more space, while a player with more bombs can threaten several routes at once. Keep an exit lane open, avoid walking beside a fresh bomb unless you know the range, and be careful with Skull panels in three-player Battle Mode because the curse can spread.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not bomb the exit after you reveal it. Extra enemies can appear and erase a clean finish.
  2. Do not leave a power-up sitting beside an active bomb. Collect it first, then keep clearing.
  3. Do not chase enemies through unopened blocks. Build lanes and make them come to you.
  4. Do not trust long firepower near corners. Stronger blasts help, but they also reach mistakes farther away.
  5. Do not waste the first minute clearing every block. Find value, open routes, and keep moving toward the finish.
  6. Do not stand next to your own bomb without an escape lane. A bomb can trap you as easily as it traps an enemy.
  7. Do not treat speed as pure safety. Faster movement helps only if you can stop outside the blast.
