Borderlands 2: Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty Tips - Oasis DLC Guide

Borderlands 2 Captain Scarlett DLC tips for Oasis, Sandskiff travel, mission flow, side cleanup, Seraph Crystals, and raid-boss prep.

On this page

Borderlands 2: Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty is a campaign add-on for Borderlands 2, developed by Gearbox Software with Triptych Games support and released by 2K Games. It is not a standalone game: you need Borderlands 2 access before you can play it, and this guide stays inside the Oasis, Pirate Bay, Sandskiff, and treasure-hunt route.

Content warning: This Mature-rated Borderlands 2 add-on sits inside a violent, crude looter-shooter with strong language, sexual themes, alcohol references, and gore descriptors. This guide keeps the advice non-graphic and focused on play.

Use this as a spoiler-light first-run guide for entering Oasis, learning the Sandskiff, separating story progress from cleanup, and saving Hyperius, Master Gee, and Seraph Crystals for after the DLC story. It does not cover the base campaign or other Borderlands 2 add-ons.

Essential Tips

1. Confirm You Are Starting the Scarlett DLC

Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty is the pirate treasure campaign that begins around Oasis and Pirate Bay. If your objective is about Badass Crater, Aegrus, Dragon Keep, or Commander Lilith, you are in a different add-on. Keep this route focused on Scarlett, Shade, the Sandskiff, compass pieces, Wurmwater, Washburne Refinery, Magnys Lighthouse, and the Leviathan.

2. Treat Level 15 as the Practical Floor

Oasis can set its Normal Mode level when you first visit, with a lower floor around level 15. Do not jump in just because the fast-travel option appears. Bring a working build, trusted weapons, and enough survivability for pirates, worms, vehicles, and larger targets.

If you are still learning Borderlands 2’s gun, shield, grenade, and skill rhythms, finish more base-game progress first. This DLC assumes you can manage open fights and recover under pressure.

3. Bring Weapons for People, Worms, and Vehicles

Pirate bandits, desert worms, skiffs, convoy targets, and bosses do not all ask for the same answer. Carry a reliable close- or mid-range weapon, something accurate for weak spots, and enough ammo variety that one empty pool does not strand you.

Explosive or hard-hitting weapons can help with clusters and vehicles, but do not build your whole plan around one favorite gun.

4. Learn the Sandskiff Before You Rush Objectives

The Sandskiff is not just flavor. Early missions make you gather parts, start the vehicle, fight enemy skiffs, and cross larger areas. Learn how it turns, how exposed you feel while driving, and where vehicle stations sit before treating every marker as a straight-line sprint.

When a mission sends you across Wurmwater or toward a ship, clear immediate threats, then move with purpose.

5. Follow the Story Until the Main Spaces Open

The main path runs from A Warm Welcome through X Marks The Spot. You do not need to memorize the list, but understand the pattern: Oasis opens the DLC, the Sandskiff expands travel, Scarlett’s treasure hunt pulls you through new zones, and later missions send you toward the lighthouse and final treasure sequence.

Side missions can wait if your first goal is finishing the story. Push far enough to understand the map and see which zones matter before cleaning every marker.

6. Use Message in a Bottle Quests as Cleanup, Not Distractions

The DLC includes several Message in a Bottle treasure tasks. They are worth doing, but they can slow your first pass if you stop every story beat to comb terrain. Learn the surrounding zone, then return when you are not under mission pressure.

A treasure clue is easier to solve when you already know the route, nearby landmarks, and respawns.

7. Restock Before Refineries, Lighthouses, and Boss Doors

Washburne Refinery, Magnys Lighthouse, and the late Leviathan route are cleaner when you enter with ammo, backpack space, and a loadout ready for more than one fight. Sell junk before long pushes, reload, and check your shield or grenade mod.

The final stretch includes weak-spot shooting and additional enemies, so do not enter with one nearly empty weapon and no Second Wind plan.

8. Separate Story Completion From Raid-Boss Ambition

Hyperius the Invincible and Master Gee the Invincible are not normal first-run story checks. Treat them as post-campaign challenges tied to side missions and Seraph Crystal goals. Finishing X Marks The Spot does not automatically make you raid-ready.

Come back later with stronger gear, a deliberate build, and a clear reason to farm.

9. Use Maps for Named-Location Cleanup

Named-location cleanup spans Oasis, Wurmwater, The Rustyards, Washburne Refinery, Hayter’s Folly, Magnys Lighthouse, and The Leviathan’s Lair. Most locations come naturally while doing story and side missions, so do not over-scan every edge on your first visit.

After the main route and side missions, open your maps and look for greyed or unexplored spaces.

10. Play Co-Op as Pressure Relief, Not a Shortcut

Borderlands 2 co-op makes travel, revives, and tougher fights more forgiving, but it does not replace fundamentals. Solo players should lean harder into survivability and flexible weapons; co-op groups should coordinate vehicle movement and boss pressure instead of scattering across the map.

Character readinessLevel access is only the floor, not a comfort guarantee
Weapon varietyPirates, worms, skiffs, convoys, and bosses need different tools

Sandskiff and Mission Flow

The early DLC rhythm is simple: reach Oasis, meet Shade, get the Sandskiff working, and use it to expand across pirate territory. The vehicle changes how you read the map, so check where skiff stations, ramps, bridges, and enemy vehicles sit.

Vehicle fights reward movement. Keep enough distance to avoid being boxed in, but do not drift so far from the objective that you lose the route. If your skiff is taking heavy damage, break line of sight and use the nearest practical station instead of forcing the whole trip in a wreck.

Once Scarlett’s treasure hunt opens up, the DLC alternates between broad travel and tighter combat spaces. Before entering an interior or obvious arena, reload and check that your backup weapon is not empty.

The story path is forgiving enough for a normal first clear, but it punishes sloppy assumptions. If a fight adds extra enemies, keep a safe Second Wind target in view. If a boss exposes clear weak spots, slow down and hit them.

Side Cleanup and Endgame

Captain Scarlett’s DLC has a lot of optional work, but not all of it belongs at the same point in your run. Side missions are good for learning zones and filling in rewards, while Message in a Bottle quests are better when you are ready to inspect terrain.

For completion cleanup, use each map as a checklist. Oasis, Wurmwater, The Rustyards, Washburne Refinery, Hayter’s Folly, Magnys Lighthouse, and The Leviathan’s Lair all have named spaces. If the map still has grey areas, revisit after the story.

Hyperius and Master Gee are a different category. They are invincible-style fights, and Master Gee revolves around an acid-pool rhythm after worms die. Do not treat either fight as normal just because it appears on a board. Save, restock, bring a serious build, and expect to practice or return later.

Seraph Crystals belong in the same endgame bucket. Finish the DLC story, clean up normal side content, then decide whether raid farming is worth a dedicated setup.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not follow this as a base-game guide - it only covers the Captain Scarlett campaign add-on.

  2. Do not enter Oasis with a half-built character - level 15 access does not mean your loadout is ready.

  3. Do not rely on one weapon type - pirate bandits, worms, skiffs, bosses, and weak spots need different answers.

  4. Do not ignore the Sandskiff controls - vehicle travel is central enough that sloppy driving wastes time.

  5. Do not chase every bottle clue immediately - learn the zone first, then solve treasure tasks with better map context.

  6. Do not rush into Washburne Refinery or Magnys Lighthouse understocked - long pushes are cleaner after selling junk and buying ammo.

  7. Do not fire blindly at the final boss - prioritize visible weak spots and keep lesser enemies available for recovery.

  8. Do not treat Hyperius or Master Gee as normal story bosses - they are post-story challenges that deserve preparation.

  9. Do not assume Seraph Crystal farming works the same in every mode - check your edition and difficulty before planning a farm.

  10. Do not mix advice from later Borderlands 2 DLC - Pirate’s Booty has its own areas, vehicle flow, side missions, and endgame.
