Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time Beginner Tips - Clocks, Carrots, and Era Progression

Beginner tips for Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, covering clocks, golden carrots, Era Selector progress, movement, camera habits, Acme Boxes, and version scope.

On this page

Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time is a 1999 PlayStation and Windows 3D platformer developed by Behaviour Interactive and published by Infogrames. Bugs is the playable character, Merlin Munroe teaches the time-travel rules, and progress is built around clocks, golden carrots, the Era Selector, and revisit-friendly 3D platforming.

This guide is for the original Lost in Time, not Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters, The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout, Looney Tunes: Carrot Crazy, Wacky Races, or another Looney Tunes game. It is also not a clock-location checklist, golden-carrot route, full level walkthrough, boss guide, cheat-code page, or 100% route.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Clocks as Progress, Not Just Collectibles

If a new era or mission is blocked, you usually need more clocks.

The Era Selector does not open everything at once. Clocks are the main progression item for entering more missions, opening more eras, and eventually returning to the present. When you are unsure what to do next, check which doors are blocked and how many clocks you have before assuming you missed a story trigger.

2. Use Nowhere as the Move Set Tutorial

The opening training area is teaching required verbs, not optional flavor.

Nowhere introduces Merlin, signs, and the basic moves Bugs will use throughout the game. Take time to practice jumping, kicking, rolling, crouching, pushing, object handling, ear-gliding, rabbit holes, and tunneling before rushing into later eras.

3. Check the Inventory Before Leaving a Level

The pause inventory tells you what remains in that level.

The inventory tracks clocks, golden carrots, and Acme Boxes found versus available. Use it before quitting a level so you know whether you are leaving behind a broad category of progress, not just a vague memory of what you explored.

4. Let Golden Carrots Guide Optional Cleanup

Golden carrots matter most for completion and bonus access.

Normal carrots keep Bugs healthy, while golden carrots are tied to bonus or secret level access and completion. If you are only trying to move forward, clocks are the priority. If you are cleaning up, golden carrots become the long-term routing problem.

5. Do Not Force Every Objective on First Visit

Lost in Time expects returning with better knowledge and spells.

The game is partially non-linear, and several interactions are easier after you understand Merlin’s spells, hidden symbols, camera tools, and object rules. Leave an area, make progress elsewhere, then return with a clearer plan instead of turning every first visit into a full-completion attempt.

6. Learn the Question Mark and Exclamation Mark Prompts

Bugs’ overhead icons are interaction checks.

A question mark means something nearby can be read or checked. An exclamation mark means something nearby can be activated. Stop and use the Action command when these icons appear, especially near signs, Merlin, switches, spell symbols, and suspicious objects.

7. Use Checkpoints Deliberately

A mistake usually costs position, not a limited life count.

When Bugs runs out of energy or falls into a hazard, he returns to the current area’s start or the latest checkpoint. Touch checkpoint icons when you find them, and use Merlin save prompts when available instead of relying on one long clean run through a level.

8. Keep Lost in Time Separate From Time Busters

Do not import Taz, co-op, gear, or dual-character advice.

The later Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters has different structure and dual-character play. Lost in Time is about Bugs’ solo movement, clocks, golden carrots, Merlin’s lessons, and era-based mission gates.

Movement and Camera Habits

SituationBetter Habit
New platforming roomStop long enough to test the camera before jumping
Narrow path or ledgeWalk or crouch-walk instead of holding full speed
Long fallUse Bugs’ ears to slow the descent when the landing matters
Object puzzleTry push, pick up, drop, throw, kick, and jump interactions logically
Rabbit holeRemember that entering, tunneling, and climbing out are part of the move set
Blocked viewRotate or pan the camera before committing to a jump
Vehicle segmentTreat it as a separate control rhythm, not normal on-foot platforming

Lost in Time is a late-1990s 3D platformer, so camera management is part of the challenge. The safest habit is to inspect a space first, line up the camera, then move. That matters more than rushing toward the next visible carrot.

Clocks, Carrots, and Acme Boxes

Prioritize by Objective Type

Item / CounterWhat It Means
Normal carrotsHealth recovery, with surplus carrots feeding a stash when Bugs is full
Golden carrotsOptional/completion progress and bonus or secret level access
ClocksMain progression through missions, eras, and the route back to the present
Acme BoxesLevel-specific sets that can award an extra clock when fully completed

When you enter a level for the first time, focus on learning the layout, finding clocks you can reach cleanly, and noticing where the game is hinting at a later ability or object interaction. Save exact golden-carrot cleanup for a dedicated route.

Finish Acme Box Sets Intentionally

Acme Box objectives are not casual break-one-and-forget counters. If you leave a level before finishing a set, earlier boxes may not stay cleared. When you start hunting them, use the inventory and commit to the full set instead of breaking random boxes while passing through.

Spend the Carrot Stash With Purpose

At full health, normal carrots can build toward hub golden carrots. That makes ordinary carrots useful even when Bugs is not damaged. Still, do not turn every level into a blind carrot sweep unless your current goal is completion cleanup.

Merlin, Spells, and Revisits

Merlin is more than story dressing. He teaches movement, marks saves and checkpoints, gives hints, and eventually grants spells that open or activate specific symbols.

Spell / FeatureBeginner Use
Hocus-PocusActivates fan-style movement opportunities for a limited time
Super jumpHelps Bugs reach higher areas marked by the right symbol
Open SesameOpens magic doors when used at the correct symbol
Magical TuneTriggers music-based interactions
Merlin hintsPoint you toward movement rules, hidden locations, saves, or next steps

If an area looks unreachable, do not assume the jump is impossible or that the controls are failing. Mark the room mentally, keep progressing, and return after Merlin has taught more tools.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not use a Time Busters guide for Lost in Time - Taz, co-op, dual-character puzzles, and gear routes belong to a different game.

  2. Do not ignore the inventory screen - It is the cleanest way to tell whether a level still has clocks, golden carrots, or Acme Boxes left.

  3. Do not chase every golden carrot on a first visit - Some cleanup is better after more spells, camera familiarity, and route practice.

  4. Do not leave Acme Box sets half-finished - Treat those objectives as a full set once you decide to start them.

  5. Do not jump before fixing the camera - Rotate, pan, or use Bugs’ view when the route is hard to read.

  6. Do not miss Merlin or sign prompts - Question marks and exclamation marks often mark information or actions the level expects you to use.

  7. Do not treat normal carrots as worthless at full health - They can still feed the carrot stash for hub golden carrots.

  8. Do not assume one enemy answer works everywhere - Small enemies and larger opponents can ask for different object, kick, jump, or trap interactions.

  9. Do not chase clock or carrot locations from memory - Exact collectible routing needs a dedicated cleanup route.
