Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare by Infinity Ward, published by Activision, is a first-person shooter split into three different play spaces: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies. Learn each mode on its own terms instead of trying to use one habit set everywhere.
Content warning: ESRB rates Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare M for Mature 17+ with Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Strong Language, and Suggestive Themes. This guide keeps mature combat and Zombies material non-graphic and focused on play.
This is a beginner fundamentals guide. It is not a full campaign walkthrough, competitive meta/loadout tier list, current matchmaking report, Zombies Easter egg route, DLC map guide, or achievement guide.
Campaign Tips
1. Use Cover as Soon as the Screen Turns Red
Campaign survival starts with breaking line of sight.
When you take heavy damage, get behind crates, walls, containers, or other solid cover and let health recover before re-peeking. Infinite Warfare still rewards fast shooting, but rushing while already hurt turns easy infantry fights into reload screens.
2. Lean From Cover When the Indicator Appears
Contextual leaning lets you fight without stepping fully into fire.
When the cover indicator appears near your crosshair, aim down sights from cover instead of walking out into the lane. This is especially useful in rooms with several enemies, robots, or long sightlines where standing in the open costs health quickly.
3. Use the Provided Ability Before Panic Starts
Campaign tools are meant to solve pressure.
If a mission gives you a shield, drone, seeker, shock grenade, anti-gravity grenade, or another tool, build the next push around it. Saving every ability for a perfect moment often means taking avoidable damage while the answer is sitting unused.
4. Expect Infantry, Zero-G, and Space Combat to Feel Different
Do not autopilot every mission like a hallway shooter.
The campaign can shift between ground firefights, on-foot zero-gravity sections, and Jackal space combat. Slow down when the rules change, check how movement works, and give yourself a moment to read the objective before chasing enemies.
5. Treat Side Missions as Progression, Not Filler
Optional operations can feed the main campaign.
Side missions are worth checking before harder cleanup because they can connect to weapons, assets, and supporting context. If a later challenge mode is your goal, build a stronger campaign file before trying to brute-force it.
6. Save Specialist and #YOLO for Later
Challenge modes change the survival rules.
Specialist is unlocked after campaign completion, and #YOLO comes after that. Specialist removes normal health regeneration except Nano Shots and adds harsher helmet, injury, weapon-drop, and Jackal-control pressure, so finish a normal run first.
Multiplayer Tips
1. Pick a Combat Rig for the Job
Your Rig is more than a cosmetic choice.
Combat Rigs define your active Payload and passive Trait. Warfighter is the easiest all-around starting point, while Merc, Synaptic, FTL, Stryker, and Phantom lean toward defense, close-quarters aggression, mobility, support, or marksman play.
2. Know the Difference Between Payloads and Traits
One is a charged tool; the other shapes your default play.
Payloads fill through score and then activate for a short power spike. Traits are mainly passive bonuses. If you keep forgetting to trigger your Payload, choose a straightforward one; if your deaths feel repetitive, change the Trait first.
3. Change Rig When the Match Demands It
You are not locked into the first bad fit.
Rigs can be changed during a match. If your marksman setup is trapped in tight rooms, or your close-range Rig cannot cross open lanes, switch roles instead of feeding the same route.
4. Learn Maps by Danger Spots, Not Just Layout
The important question is where players appear before you see them.
As you learn each map, remember common camping corners, wall-run approaches, slide lanes, and grenade-before-entry spots. When a player is holding one route, look for a flank instead of sprinting into the same angle again.
5. Tune Settings That Affect Your Aim
Comfort beats copying someone else’s sensitivity.
Use a sensitivity you can control, and consider turning off vibration if it disrupts your tracking. If voice chat distracts you, mute players or lower voice volume so you can hear the match and keep your aim steady.
6. Treat Current Online Health as Variable
Online modes exist, but population and service health can vary.
Steam lists Online PvP and Online Co-op, and Activision hosts an Online Services page, but active playlists, matchmaking times, platform status, and online achievement behavior can change. Check the mode you plan to play before building a session around it.
Zombies Tips
1. Practice Spaceland Privately First
The map is easier once the districts feel familiar.
Zombies in Spaceland has named areas such as The Junction, Journey into Space, Astrocade, Polar Peaks, Cosmic Way, and Kepler System. A few private runs help you learn doors, loops, portals, and escape routes before co-op pressure starts.
2. Spend Early Points With a Route in Mind
Power and portals matter more than random doors.
Do not buy every opening just because you can. Learn where the power switches and portals are, then spend points to connect the map toward useful routes and Pack-a-Punch setup.
3. Turn Training Into a Movement Habit
Wide loops are safer than last-second dodges.
Group zombies with broad turns, keep looking ahead, and choose your next lane before the horde reaches you. If you stare only at the zombie in front, you miss the space you are about to run into.
4. Use Early Rounds to Build Points
Small point habits snowball into earlier access.
Repair barriers in the early rounds when it is safe, use controlled shots before melee kills, and avoid picking up drops accidentally if you are trying to maximize point income. Later rounds are for survival first.
5. Do Not Rush the Easter Egg Setup
Spaceland has more going on than basic survival.
Zombies progression can involve power, portals, Pack-a-Punch, cards, Ceti Defence, wonder weapons, and boss preparation. Learn the map and survival loop before chasing main-quest steps.
6. Keep the Starter Pistol if the Main Quest Is Your Goal
Some Spaceland routes plan around Pack-a-Punching it.
If you are only learning survival, swap weapons normally. If you are working toward the Spaceland Easter egg, keep the starter pistol until you understand the Pack-a-Punch and defense plan tied to it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not keep shooting through red-screen damage - Take cover and recover before turning a safe fight into a death.
- Do not ignore the cover-lean prompt - Leaning lets you return fire without stepping fully into the lane.
- Do not hoard campaign abilities forever - Shields, drones, seekers, and grenades are strongest before the fight collapses.
- Do not use one Combat Rig for every objective - Change Rig when the map, mode, or enemy pattern calls for a different role.
- Do not sprint into the same multiplayer camper twice - Use movement, grenades, or a flank to break the angle.
- Do not let settings fight your aim - Fix sensitivity, vibration, and voice volume if they distract you.
- Do not open Zombies doors randomly - Spend toward power, portals, routes, and survival space.
- Do not start the Spaceland main quest while lost - Learn districts and loops before committing to Easter egg steps.
- Do not waste early Zombies points - Barrier repairs and controlled kills can speed up your first useful purchases.
