Call of Juarez is the original Western first-person shooter developed by Techland and originally published by Ubisoft. Current PC storefronts list Techland Publishing. This is the 2006 original, not Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, The Cartel, or a port-comparison guide.
Content warning: ESRB rates Call of Juarez M for Mature 17+ with Blood, Intense Violence, Language, and Sexual Themes. This guide keeps descriptions non-graphic and focused on play.
This is a beginner first-clear guide for Ray and Billy fundamentals, cover, cautious movement, Concentration, weapon upkeep, difficulty expectations, Wanted Card habits, and multiplayer caveats. It is not a full walkthrough, exact stealth route, duel timing guide, collectibles route, achievement roadmap, weapon-stat sheet, or multiplayer guide.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Character Swaps as Rule Changes
Ray and Billy do not solve problems the same way.
Ray sections are built around direct fights, cover, target selection, and slow-motion shooting. Billy sections reward patience, careful movement, observation, traversal, and avoiding unnecessary open fights. When the campaign changes characters, reset your habits instead of forcing the last section’s rhythm onto the next one.
2. Use Cover Before You Try to Look Stylish
Ray can fight, but he should not stand in the open.
Slow the pace down during gunfights. Take a wall, crate, barrel, pillar, or other solid angle, then lean out and clear enemies deliberately. Close threats matter first because they can collapse your cover faster than distant enemies.
3. Spend Slow Motion on Dangerous Entries
Concentration is strongest when it prevents a messy room fight.
The original Call of Juarez uses its own slow-motion behavior, not the later Bound in Blood or Gunslinger meter systems. Use Ray’s slow-motion shooting when a close entry or busy angle is likely to punish normal aiming. Do not plan around exact cooldowns or duel timings until you have practiced them on the version you are playing.
4. Replace Bad Guns Before They Replace Your Plan
Weapon condition and ammo matter more than favorite habits.
Check fallen enemies, chests, drawers, and obvious supply spots after fights are safe. If a weapon is worn down, empty, or poorly suited to the next range, swap it before the next push. This guide does not rank weapons or claim exact stats.
5. Keep Billy Quiet and Deliberate
Billy’s safest wins often happen before a fight starts.
Move slowly, crouch when the section asks for stealth, watch patrol movement, and use environmental cover instead of sprinting through exposed spaces. If the game is clearly asking you to remain unseen, treat one careless movement as more dangerous than one missed shot.
6. Use the Whip as a Tool First
Billy’s whip is mainly about access and problem solving.
Use it to reach paths, move through traversal problems, and handle the environmental tasks the game puts in front of you. Do not treat it like a universal combat answer when avoiding detection or changing position would solve the problem cleaner.
7. Do Not Drag Ray Habits Into Billy Sections
A gunfight mindset can fail a stealth section.
Billy can have weapons, but many of his sections are not built like Ray’s shootouts. If enemies are patrolling, the stealth display matters, or the level is giving you cover and traversal tools, slow down and look for the intended safe movement before starting a fight.
8. Use Manual Saves When Your Version Allows It
Long, difficult chapters punish casual risk.
Saving is especially important on harder settings. Because platform and version behavior can differ, use manual saves when available, respect checkpoints when they are not, and avoid experimenting right after a clean stretch unless you can recover quickly.
9. Learn the Story Before Planning Very Hard
A first clear and a hard-route run are different jobs.
Story Mode starts with standard difficulty choices, while Very Hard unlocks after completing the game. Learn the character rhythm, weapon upkeep, stealth expectations, duels, and Wanted Card flow before treating harder cleanup as the main plan.
10. Separate Wanted Cards From First-Clear Survival
Collectibles are easier when the area is already under control.
Wanted Cards are real collectibles, but this guide does not provide exact locations. Check safe side rooms, containers, and obvious interactables after combat or stealth pressure is gone. Save a full 40-card route for a dedicated guide with screenshots.
11. Treat Duels as Their Own System
A duel is not a normal cover fight.
The campaign and Duel Challenge use a separate draw-and-shoot structure. Stay focused on the on-screen duel rules and clean input instead of trying to solve the encounter like a hallway fight. Exact duel timings and opponent scripts belong in a dedicated duel guide.
12. Do Not Plan Around Public Online Play
Current PC availability is not a green light for normal online multiplayer.
Steam says online features are no longer supported as of October 2024, while GOG lists multiplayer over LAN only. Treat multiplayer, online achievements, and current console service behavior as separate checking targets.
Ray and Billy Priorities
| Character | First Priority | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Ray | Take cover, clear close threats, then push | His sections lean on gunfights and controlled angles |
| Ray | Use slow motion for crowded entries | It stabilizes fights before enemies surround you |
| Ray | Replace worn or empty weapons | Bad weapon condition can ruin a good position |
| Billy | Observe patrols before moving | Many sections punish being seen more than moving slowly |
| Billy | Use crouch, cover, and shadows when stealth matters | Staying hidden is often the objective |
| Billy | Use the whip for traversal and puzzles | His toolset is not just about combat |
Mode and Cleanup Priorities
- Story Mode first: Learn the alternating character rhythm before chasing unlocks.
- Difficulty second: Save Very Hard thinking for after the first completion.
- Extra Missions later: Treat them as post-story content, not the first objective.
- Duel Challenge later: Build comfort with story duels before isolating them.
- Wanted Cards after safety: Check nearby containers and side spaces only when combat or stealth pressure is low.
- Check multiplayer before planning around it: Steam and GOG current notes do not support a simple public-online promise.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not sprint after a character switch - Ray and Billy sections ask for different habits.
-
Do not stand in the open as Ray - Cover gives you time to choose targets and recover from bad angles.
-
Do not keep a worn or empty gun out of habit - Swap weapons and collect ammo after the fight is safe.
-
Do not turn Billy sections into forced shootouts - If the level is built around hiding, moving carefully is the safer play.
-
Do not use the whip like every problem is a fight - Treat it as a traversal and puzzle tool before forcing combat.
-
Do not chase a Wanted Card during active danger - Clear the room or route first, then check containers.
-
Do not treat Concentration like the later games - The original game’s slow-motion behavior is different from Bound in Blood and Gunslinger.
-
Do not enter multiplayer expecting normal online service - Current PC play may be limited to retired online features or LAN-only sessions.
