CARRION Beginner Tips - Biomass, Abilities, and Escape Routes

Spoiler-light CARRION tips for biomass, save hives, abilities, power stations, enemy ambushes, fire recovery, containment units, and escape routes.

On this page

CARRION here means Phobia Game Studio’s reverse-horror action game published by Devolver Digital, where you control the creature escaping through a research facility.

Content warning: CARRION is rated ESRB Mature 17+ with Blood and Gore and Violence descriptors. This guide keeps discussion non-graphic and focused on play.

This is a spoiler-light beginner guide for surviving the early facility, understanding biomass, reading rooms, and avoiding common ability mistakes. It is not a full walkthrough, exact containment-unit route, achievement plan, or upgrade-location checklist.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Biomass as Health and Form

Losing health can also change what you can do.

Biomass is not just a life bar. It is tied to the creature’s size, survivability, and ability state, so taking damage can make a room harder in more than one way. Before forcing a puzzle or combat encounter, check whether you are healthy enough and in the right form for the ability you are trying to use.

2. Feed Before You Push Forward

A quiet room is a chance to recover.

Humans are your main recovery source, while many harder security threats are not simple healing resources. If you have just taken damage, look for a safe feeding opportunity before entering another armed room. Leaving available biomass behind can turn the next fight into a reset.

3. Save at Hives Whenever You Can

Wall cracks are progress insurance.

Save points are tied to hive-like wall cracks where the creature leaves biomass behind. Use them before exploring a new branch, testing a dangerous enemy room, or chasing a containment-unit puzzle. The game can also autosave at some transitions, but those saves are farther apart than regular save points.

4. Use Roar as a Navigation Habit

The creature has a built-in way to listen for hives.

Roar is available from the start, and nearby hives can answer it. If you are circling through a familiar area or unsure where the next save/progress point is, pause and use roar before randomly committing to a route.

5. Read Vents, Grates, Water, and Switches First

Rooms usually tell you what kind of creature the puzzle wants.

CARRION’s early rooms teach you to pull grates, move through vents, use water, and trigger switches with a tentacle. When a door looks blocked, look around the whole room before brute-forcing combat. A grate, lever, water pocket, or side vent often matters more than another direct attack.

6. Match Abilities to Biomass Stage

Wrong form, wrong tool.

Some abilities are stage-dependent, so an ability that worked in one room may not be available in another health/biomass state. If your plan suddenly fails, do not assume the route is impossible. Recheck your biomass, available ability, and nearby recovery or energy options.

7. Keep Defensive Energy in Mind

Power stations are not background decoration.

Defensive abilities use energy, and that energy comes from power stations. Before entering a room with stronger security, note where you can recharge. Spending defensive energy just to move faster can leave you exposed when the room actually turns hostile.

8. Ambush Shielded Soldiers Instead of Charging Them

Front-facing defenses are meant to punish impatience.

Shielded soldiers are poor targets for a straight frontal rush. Attack from behind, above, or through environmental setups when the room allows it. If you have possession or another control tool available, use that to break the room open before committing your main body.

9. Take Fire Seriously

Do not wait for fire damage to fix itself.

Flamethrower soldiers are one of the clearest early checks on reckless movement. If you catch fire, prioritize escape and water instead of continuing the fight. Even a winning attack can be too expensive if you burn through biomass afterward.

10. Use Possession for Access, Not Just Violence

Human control can solve spaces your body cannot.

Possession is useful because it changes how you interact with the facility. Think about doors, switches, mechs, and enemy positioning before using it as a simple attack. A possessed body can create a safer route or open a room that direct movement cannot solve.

11. Mark Containment Units for Later

A first pass does not need to become a puzzle checklist.

Containment units are tied to bonuses and achievements, but exact locations and solutions belong in a route guide. If a containment puzzle clearly wants an ability you do not have or a route you cannot read, remember the area and move on. Forcing it early is how you lose the main route.

12. Backtrack When New Paths Open

Evolution changes the facility.

The official PlayStation overview describes a connected overworld with paths opening through evolution and completed goals. When you gain a new ability or size state, old barriers may become useful again. Backtrack deliberately from a recent hive instead of wandering at low biomass.

Combat and Stealth Habits

  1. Open with observation: Check enemy facing, shields, water, grates, vents, and switches before attacking.
  2. Grab objects and bodies deliberately: Tentacle control can move objects and disrupt enemies, so use the room before spending health.
  3. Ambush from safe angles: Rear, overhead, and environmental attacks are safer than shield-first charges.
  4. Do not chase through fire: Escape to water and recover control before re-engaging.
  5. Use possession to turn rooms: A controlled human or pilot can access tools your creature body cannot.
  6. Recharge before security rooms: If a power station is nearby, top off defensive energy before moving on.
  7. Retreat to a hive when depleted: A short reset beats losing progress deep in a hostile branch.

Resource Management

ResourceBest HabitWhy It Helps
BiomassFeed before entering armed roomsKeeps health and form stable
HivesSave whenever a wall crack is availableReduces repeated route work after deaths
AutosavesTreat transition saves as backupsThey are less frequent than regular save points
EnergyRecharge at power stations before riskDefensive abilities need fuel
HumansConsume when recovery is safeRestores survival resources
SoldiersAmbush or control instead of treating them as foodThey are dangerous and not normal biomass sources
Containment unitsNote unsolved ones and return laterExact routes and requirements belong in a dedicated route guide

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not run past a hive without saving - The next room may be farther from an autosave than you expect.
  2. Do not enter armed rooms while starving - Low biomass limits your margin for damage and ability use.
  3. Do not charge shielded soldiers head-on - Use rear, overhead, ambush, environmental, or possession options.
  4. Do not ignore water after catching fire - Escaping to water can matter more than finishing an attack.
  5. Do not spend defensive energy casually - Recharge before committing to rooms with turrets, drones, or heavy security.
  6. Do not force an ability in the wrong biomass stage - Recover, change state, or recheck the room logic.
  7. Do not solve every containment unit immediately - Come back when the needed ability and route are clearer.
  8. Do not skip vents, grates, and switches - The path forward is often a room interaction, not a fight.
  9. Do not treat soldiers as normal food - Plan around them as threats, not recovery pickups.
