Celeste Beginner Tips and Tricks - Dash, Climb, B-Sides, and Strawberries

Celeste beginner tips for dash timing, climb habits, strawberries, cassettes, B-sides, Crystal Hearts, and learning difficult platforming rooms.

On this page

Celeste, developed by Maddy Makes Games Inc. and Extremely OK Games, Ltd. and published by Maddy Makes Games Inc., is a single-player precision platformer about Madeline climbing Celeste Mountain through handcrafted rooms built around jumping, climbing, and air-dashing.

This guide covers beginner habits for the main climb and early optional challenges. It does not include a full chapter walkthrough, exact strawberry routes, Crystal Heart solutions, B-side routes, C-side routes, Farewell routing, achievement cleanup, or advanced movement tech because those vary by edition in-game.

A note on difficulty: Celeste is beginner-readable, not beginner-easy. Expect repeated deaths, fast retries, and optional challenges that are meant to be skipped until the core movement feels steady.

Essential Tips

1. Plan the Landing Before the Dash

A dash is strongest when you already know the next safe spot.

Before you press dash, look for the platform, wall, crystal, or transition that will reset the attempt. If you dash just to escape panic, you often arrive with no recovery plan.

2. Watch Dash State, Not Just Hazards

Madeline’s dash availability is readable during play.

Train yourself to notice whether your dash is available before starting a route. Many early mistakes happen because the previous dash was never refreshed.

3. Use Walls to Slow the Room Down

Climbing is not only for gaining height.

A wall can give you a moment to line up the next jump or dash. When a room feels too fast, use the nearest safe wall as a reset point instead of rushing the whole sequence.

4. Treat Each Screen as a Short Puzzle

Most rooms ask for a specific route, not raw speed.

Pause at the start, identify the exit, and trace the intended order of jumps, climbs, dashes, and refreshes. Then execute that route one piece at a time.

5. Let Death Teach One Adjustment

Fast respawns are part of how Celeste teaches movement.

After a miss, change one thing: dash later, jump earlier, land on a wall first, or ignore the strawberry. Repeating the same input pattern is usually slower than making a small correction.

6. Separate Clear Attempts From Strawberry Attempts

Strawberries are optional challenge goals.

On a first visit, clear the room once without detouring. After you know the safe path, decide whether the strawberry route is worth learning now or whether it should wait.

7. Read Strawberry Rules Before Grabbing

Different strawberry types ask for different movement discipline.

If a strawberry follows you, focus on reaching safe ground. If a room uses seeds, stay aware of the no-ground route. If the strawberry has wings, test the room before spending a dash.

8. Treat Cassettes as Challenge Unlocks

A cassette opens a harder version of its chapter.

Finding one is useful, but it does not mean the B-side should be your next stop. Finish the main climb rhythm first, then return when the chapter’s movement language feels familiar.

9. Save Golden Strawberry Goals for Much Later

Deathless chapter clears are advanced completion goals.

Golden Strawberries ask for consistency across a whole completed chapter. Do not fold that pressure into your first clear or early collectible cleanup.

10. Do Not Force Crystal Heart Progression Early

Crystal Hearts are tied to optional gates and deeper completion.

If a heart path stalls you, move on and keep learning the main chapters. Return once your dash timing, wall use, and collectible routing are stronger.

Movement Tips

  1. Start still when possible: A calm first jump gives you a cleaner dash angle.
  2. Dash toward a target: Aim at safe ground, a wall, a refill, or the exit.
  3. Refresh deliberately: Touch ground, use a refill, or cross a screen transition before spending the next dash.
  4. Use walls as checkpoints: Catch, reposition, then continue the route.
  5. Break hard rooms into beats: Learn the first half before forcing the full clear.

Resource Management

  1. Dash: Spend it only when you know how it will be refreshed or where it will land.
  2. Climb position: Use walls to stabilize movement and line up safer jumps.
  3. Respawns: Restart quickly, but change one input after each failed attempt.
  4. Strawberry focus: Decide whether this attempt is for clearing the room or collecting.
  5. Mental stack: Track the next two actions, not every hazard on the screen at once.

Hidden Mechanics

MechanicWhat It DoesHow to Use
Dash stateShows whether another dash is availableCheck it before committing to a route
Dash refreshRestores dash through ground, crystals, or transitionsBuild routes around the next refresh point
Safe-ground strawberry pickupLets a following strawberry count once you reach stable groundSecure the landing before celebrating the grab
Strawberry seedsCombine after all seeds in a room are gathered without touching groundPlan the whole airborne loop before starting
Winged strawberriesFly away after a dash is usedLook for a no-dash route first
CassettesUnlock harder B-side chaptersSave B-side attempts until the base chapter feels reliable
Crystal HeartsGate some later optional progressionTreat them as cleanup targets unless you need the gate

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not dash before choosing a landing - A panic dash usually creates the next mistake.
  2. Avoid rushing the same failed route - Change one input after each death.
  3. Do not turn every first clear into a strawberry route - Learn the room before adding the detour.
  4. Avoid dashing at winged strawberries too early - Test whether the room expects a no-dash solution.
  5. Do not treat B-sides as required next steps - They are harder chapter variants, not basic progression.
  6. Avoid chasing Golden Strawberries during early cleanup - Deathless goals belong after the chapter feels consistent.
