Clash of Clans Beginner Tips - Builders, Battles, Clans, and Heroes

Clash of Clans beginner tips for builders, Town Hall pacing, loot, stars, regular battles, ranked, Clan Castle, Clan Wars, Clan Capital, Heroes, and Ore.

On this page

Clash of Clans, developed by Supercell, is a free-to-play strategy game about building a Home Village, upgrading defenses and armies, raiding for resources, fighting Clan Wars, and managing long-term progression through Builders, Heroes, Clan systems, and live events.

Content note: Clash of Clans is rated for fantasy violence, online user interaction, and in-app purchases. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on play.

This guide is for new and returning players who need a stable plan for early and mid-game habits. It is not a current best-army list, base-layout gallery, Hero Equipment tier list, trophy-push route, upgrade-cost chart, or event farming guide.

Patch note: Clash of Clans is live-service, so upgrade costs, timers, event boosts, troop and spell tuning, Hero Equipment, Ranked rules, and Clan War League details can change after major updates or event rotations.

Essential Tips

1. Keep Builders Working

Idle Builders are lost progress.

Builders handle upgrades to defenses, storages, mines, and Heroes, so your first planning habit is simple: know what each Builder will do next. Do not spend every resource at random. Leave yourself a realistic next upgrade, and try to start longer upgrades before long breaks.

2. Upgrade the Town Hall With a Plan

A higher Town Hall unlocks more, but it changes your economy.

Town Hall upgrades open new buildings, traps, Heroes, and higher upgrade levels. They also affect loot interactions against lower Town Hall opponents. Before starting a Town Hall upgrade, check whether your Builders, Laboratory, favorite army, and key defenses are ready for the next stage.

3. Do Not Treat Every Attack the Same

Farming, practice, stars, and trophies are different goals.

Regular Battles are useful for loot, events, and practice without risking Ranked League standing. Ranked Battles are competitive and use limited weekly attacks. Decide what the attack is for before you spend the army.

4. Attack Around Stars, Not Just Damage

The win conditions are specific.

One star comes from either destroying the Town Hall or reaching 50% destruction. The second star comes from completing the other objective, and the third comes from destroying the remaining non-wall buildings. When an attack starts, know whether you are playing for Town Hall, 50%, full cleanup, or safe loot.

5. Protect and Use the Clan Castle

Clan support is a power system, not just chat.

The Clan Castle lets you join or create a Clan, receive reinforcement troops, spells, and Siege Machines for attacks, and use donated troops on defense. Repair it, request useful support, and remember that war defense donations are separate from normal village support.

6. Join an Active Clan Early

Clans unlock more of the game.

Clan Wars, Clan War Leagues, Clan Games, donation support, and Clan Capital all reward coordination. A quiet Clan is still better than no Clan for some features, but an active Clan makes war planning, requests, Raid Weekends, and event rewards much easier.

7. Use Preparation Day Properly

War attacks are often won before Battle Day.

During Clan War Preparation Day, adjust your War Base, request and donate defensive troops, scout enemy bases, and coordinate targets. Once Battle Day starts, each participant gets two attacks and cannot hit the same base twice.

8. Spend Ore Deliberately

Hero Equipment is long-term power.

The Blacksmith unlocks Hero Equipment and Ore upgrades. Because Ore comes from Star Bonus, Hero Journey, Clan Wars, and events, avoid spreading upgrades across equipment you do not use. Build around the Heroes and attack styles you actually play, then recheck current balance before committing rare resources.

9. Let Events Speed Your Plan, Not Replace It

Temporary boosts should serve permanent progress.

July 2026 events included Summer Jam discounts, medal events, Goblin Researcher windows, Clan Games, and an Unlimited Hero Event. These can accelerate progress, but they rotate. Use event value on upgrades you already wanted instead of reshaping your village around a temporary schedule.

10. Practice Before Risky Attacks

Friendly and practice tools exist for a reason.

Use Practice Mode, Friendly Challenges, and regular Battles to test army ideas before spending a war or ranked attack. If an army depends on a spell, Hero ability, or Clan Castle timing, practice the sequence outside the highest-stakes button.

11. Keep Builder Base and Clan Capital in Rotation

They feed separate forms of progress.

Builder Base has its own upgrades and can eventually help unlock another Home Village Builder through B.O.B. Clan Capital lets Clan members contribute Capital Gold, upgrade Districts, and earn Raid Medal rewards during Raid Weekends. Check both regularly without letting them distract from your main Home Village plan.

12. Read News Before Trusting Old Advice

Clash changes too often for stale exact numbers.

Troop behavior, spells, Hero unlocks, equipment, events, costs, timers, Gold Pass behavior, and ranked systems can change. Use old guides for concepts, then verify current values in the official News tab, patch notes, and in-client screens.

Progression Habits

  1. Plan around Builder availability: Start upgrades so resources do not sit exposed and Builders do not finish with no next job.
  2. Keep the Laboratory relevant: Prioritize troops, spells, and Siege Machine upgrades you actually use before chasing every option.
  3. Check Town Hall requirements before rushing: New unlocks are useful only if you can afford and use them.
  4. Use Star Bonus as a routine: Five earned stars can add resources and Ore through the Treasury.
  5. Save scarce resources for repeat value: Gems, Ore, and event currency are most useful when they solve a real bottleneck.
  6. Upgrade Heroes with your attack plan in mind: Hero Hall, Hero Journey, Equipment, and Pets all become major progression tracks.
  7. Check platform support: Android, iOS/iPadOS, and Windows PC via Google Play Games can differ as storefront support changes.

Battle and Clan Habits

  1. Pick the target for your goal: A loot raid, star push, war attack, and ranked attack can all demand different risk levels.
  2. Know the star route: Decide how you will reach Town Hall, 50%, and cleanup before committing all troops.
  3. Do not ignore the Clan Castle: Enemy and friendly Clan Castle troops can change attack and defense outcomes.
  4. Scout in wars: Preparation Day scouting helps you match attacks to bases instead of guessing under pressure.
  5. Respect Battle Day limits: War attacks are limited, and repeat hits on the same base are not allowed.
  6. Use Clan Capital attacks carefully: Raid Weekend damage carries forward, so every attack can set up the next Clanmate.
  7. Treat Ranked as current-patch content: Weekly limits, rewards, leagues, and modifiers need an in-client check before exact advice.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not leave Builders idle - Start another useful upgrade before walking away from the village.

  2. Do not upgrade the Town Hall just because the button is available - Check your army, Laboratory, Builders, and defenses first.

  3. Do not start a ranked attack with a farming mindset - Ranked attacks have competitive stakes and current weekly limits.

  4. Do not drop troops without a star plan - Know how you are reaching Town Hall, 50%, and cleanup.

  5. Do not ignore Clan Castle requests - Empty or careless reinforcements weaken attacks, defenses, and wars.

  6. Do not enter Battle Day without scouting - War attacks are limited, and blind target choices waste chances.

  7. Do not spend Ore on every shiny equipment piece - Upgrade equipment tied to the Heroes and attacks you actually use.

  8. Do not assume event discounts are permanent - Time-limited boosts should accelerate your existing plan.

  9. Do not abandon Builder Base and Clan Capital entirely - Both have progression value outside normal Home Village upgrades.

  10. Do not copy old army or base-layout advice blindly - Check current patch notes and in-client values first.
