Cold Fear Tips - Ship Survival and Supply Guide

Cold Fear tips for ammo, storm decks, ExoMutants, ExoCels, weapons, valves, electrical hazards, Anna escorting, saves, and GOG PC play.

On this page

Cold Fear is the original 2005 Darkworks survival horror action game published by Ubisoft, centered on Tom Hansen aboard the Spirit of the East and later the Star of Sakhalin. This guide is for that original release and the current PC preservation version, not another horror game with a similar name, a sequel, or a remake.

Content warning: Cold Fear is rated Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Language. This guide keeps the warning non-graphic and focuses on play.

Cold Fear looks simple if you treat it like a straight shooter, but it is harder than a basic tips guide can make it feel. Ammo is tight, the ship moves under you, enemies revive if you leave their heads intact, and several rooms are designed around hazards instead of raw firepower. Your best route is to play slowly, finish enemies properly, and turn the environment into extra ammunition.

Essential Tips

1. Finish Every ExoMutant

Knocking an infected enemy down is not the same as ending the fight. When an ExoMutant drops, either shoot the head or move in for the head crush prompt while it is stunned. If you leave the body usable, an ExoCel can keep the room dangerous and may turn another corpse into a new problem.

Build this habit early. A few saved bullets are not worth a surprise attack later, especially in cramped ship corridors where the camera and storm movement already make tracking threats harder.

2. Kill ExoCels Before They Find Hosts

Small ExoCels are fragile, but they change the fight if you ignore them. After an infected enemy goes down, watch for the parasite instead of immediately looting or running to the next door. Use a quick, accurate shot or a safe environmental option before it reaches a body.

This is also why bodies matter. When entering a room with corpses, assume the floor can become active again until you have cleared the loose ExoCels.

3. Use the Ship Against Enemies

Cold Fear gives you valves, transformers, extinguishers, barrels, switches, moving crates, and cables for a reason. Shoot explosive barrels near groups, lure enemies past red fuel valves, use blue valves to deal with fire, and look for electrical boxes when water or locked doors are involved.

Do not spend premium ammo on every clustered enemy. If a room is full of pipes, barrels, or dangling hazards, pause long enough to read the space before firing.

4. Respect the Storm Decks

Outdoor decks are not flat shooting galleries. Waves, steep angles, narrow catwalks, and loose objects can knock your plan apart. Move in short bursts, grab rails when aiming at range, and do not fight the ship’s motion when it is safer to wait half a second for the next opening.

Running everywhere is especially risky near edges. Keep enough Resistance to recover if Tom slips or needs to climb back up.

5. Treat Ammo Rooms Like Emergency Stops

Armory and sick bay areas are tempting, but Cold Fear is not built around unlimited restocking. Use supplies when you need them, then leave some for later pressure. Bodies can provide ammo, and the environment can cover many fights, so do not empty a room just because it is available.

Before taking health supplies, decide whether you need recovery now. Sick bay resources are limited enough that conserving them for real pressure leaves more support for later encounters.

6. Assign Weapon Shortcuts

Weapon swapping gets tense when ExoCels crawl, mercenaries shoot from cover, and larger infected enemies charge. Put your most-used tools on quick directions: a reliable firearm for normal threats, a stronger option for armored or charging enemies, and a utility weapon when an area starts asking for it.

Shortcuts matter most when you are low on ammo in one gun but still have useful rounds elsewhere. Build the habit before the late-game rooms become busy.

7. Change Camera Style Deliberately

Cold Fear supports a more classic camera feel and an over-the-shoulder combat feel. Use the shooting view when precision matters, but be ready for camera changes in tight rooms and corridors. If the angle shifts, slow down and re-center before sprinting into hazards.

Moving while shooting is useful, but it is not a license to backpedal blindly. Keep walls, rails, and waves in mind while you make distance.

8. Use Steam and Floor Depressions

Some enemies are easier to track through the room than through the crosshair. Steam can expose nearly invisible threats, and floor depressions can reveal movement. If you cannot see the target cleanly, stop wasting rounds and use the room’s clues.

Yellow steam valves and floor depressions can turn a vague threat into a readable one. Once the enemy is visible or predictable, finish it quickly and crush the head if needed.

9. Protect Anna by Leading

Escort sections are not the time to explore behind Anna or let enemies choose the first contact. Stay ahead, clear ambushes, and keep the route moving so enemies do not crowd or block the path.

When a route sends you across stormy exterior space, clear immediate threats first, then move through waves with timing instead of panic.

10. Plan Around PC Version Differences

The original console releases and current PC preservation version share the same game identity, but controls and display support can differ. On modern PC, take a minute at the start to set resolution, controller, vibration, brightness, and text language options before judging the handling.

Do not assume an old Steam setup, disc setup, and current GOG setup behave identically. For a first playthrough, keep platform-specific tweaking separate from the survival habits that apply to every version.

Combat and Supply Habits

Weapon choice matters by enemy type, range, and ammo limits. Knockback and high-impact interruption can create room against immediate threats, while careful selection keeps scarce ammunition available for the enemies that need it most.

Use crouching and cover against armed humans, and use explosive barrels when available. Against infected enemies, focus less on trading shots and more on creating knockdowns, finishing heads, and clearing parasites.

The oil rig rooms ask for even more hazard awareness than the ship. Laser mines, electrified spaces, valves, bridges, and elevators can all change an encounter. If a room looks suspiciously stocked with explosive or electrical objects, it probably expects you to use them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not leave stunned ExoMutants unfinished - Crush or shoot the head before the room becomes dangerous again.

  2. Do not ignore loose ExoCels - Kill them before they reach a corpse or force another fight.

  3. Do not take recovery before you need it - Conserve sick bay and health supplies for real pressure.

  4. Do not empty armories on the first visit - Later encounters can need those supplies more than early rooms.

  5. Do not sprint across storm decks blindly - Waves, angles, and edges can punish rushed movement.

  6. Do not fight every group with bullets alone - Barrels, valves, transformers, switches, and dangling hazards are part of your toolkit.

  7. Do not use one weapon for every enemy - Match range, ammo, and enemy behavior before committing.

  8. Do not stand still during charges - Larger infected enemies reward spacing, dodging, and weak-point pressure.

  9. Do not let Anna trail into uncleared rooms - Lead escort routes and remove ambushes before she reaches them.

  10. Do not skip options setup on PC - Controls, display, language, and controller behavior can affect comfort.
