Commander Keen Episode 1 Beginner Tips - Mars, Pogo, and Raygun

Beginner tips for Commander Keen Episode 1 covering Mars map progress, pogo movement, raygun ammo, keycards, hazards, and ship parts.

On this page

Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons: Marooned on Mars is Commander Keen Episode 1, the Mars chapter of the original Vorticons trilogy. This guide is only for Marooned on Mars. Do not apply every tip here to The Earth Explodes, Keen Must Die, Keen Dreams, Goodbye, Galaxy, or later Commander Keen releases, because later episodes change enemies, layouts, and some expectations.

Your job is simple to understand and easy to make messy: recover four stolen ship parts from Martian cities, survive side-scrolling platform levels, and use the Mars map to decide where to go next. The beginner challenge is learning old PC platforming rhythm: jump timing, pogo height, limited raygun shots, colored keycards, hidden bricks, and knowing when an optional score route is not worth another lost life.

Essential Tips

1. Treat the Mars Map as Progression

A level is not just a stop on the way; it can unblock the route.

The Mars map lets you walk between cities, shrines, and other entrances, but some objects block travel until you enter and finish them. If you feel stuck outside a level, check nearby accessible places instead of assuming you missed a menu option. Save before trying a dangerous city or shrine, especially when you are carrying useful ammo or have just recovered a ship part.

2. Learn the Basic Keys Before Chasing Points

Movement control matters more than score in the first hour.

Default keyboard play uses arrows to move, Ctrl to jump, Alt to toggle the pogo stick after you have it, and Ctrl plus Alt to fire the raygun when it has charges. Space opens the status screen, and F5 saves. Spend the first safe areas learning how long Keen stays in the air, how much room he needs to stop, and how low ceilings affect jumps.

3. Get Comfortable With the Pogo Stick

The pogo stick is a movement upgrade, not a toy.

Marooned on Mars gives the pogo stick early, and many later platforms, optional pickups, and secrets assume you can use it. Toggle it intentionally. Pogo height helps you reach ledges that normal jumps cannot, but it also makes Keen harder to stop in tight spaces. When a jump looks barely too high, think pogo. When a corridor is cramped or lined with danger, turn it off and walk.

4. Use the Raygun Like a Limited Resource

A raygun pickup adds shots, not permission to fire at everything.

The raygun can remove threats, but ammo is finite. Early on, it is tempting to shoot every Garg or awkward enemy. Save shots for enemies that block a narrow passage, guard a keycard, or make a jump too risky. If you can safely jump over a threat or route around it, keeping the ammo may help more in a later city.

5. Match Keycards to Doors

Colored doors are solved by matching colored cards.

When a door refuses to open, the answer is usually nearby: find the keycard of the same color. Do not burn lives forcing jumps around a locked route until you have scanned platforms, shafts, and side rooms. The real goal is the card that opens forward progress.

6. Read Shrine Hints as Route Clues

Yorp statues are not just flavor.

Several shrine messages point toward practical secrets, hidden locations, or hidden-brick behavior. If a hint mentions dark bricks or a hidden city, slow down around suspicious walls or a dark map area. Marooned on Mars likes tiny visual tells, including hidden blocks where only a small corner is visible.

7. Separate Required Progress From Score Detours

A teddy bear is valuable, but a ship part is the objective.

Point items are everywhere: lollipops, soda, pizza, books, and teddy bears. They are worth collecting when the path is safe, but the game also uses score routes to lure you over fire, pits, enemies, and difficult pogo jumps. When you are learning, take easy pickups and leave dangerous treasure alone until you can return with more confidence.

8. Save Before Big Unknown Levels

Old platformers punish curiosity quickly.

Large areas such as Red Maze City can contain confusing routes, hidden passages, enemy ambushes, and risky optional paths. Save before entering a level that looks important or unfamiliar from the Mars map. If you lose a life exploring a bad route, reload and use what you learned.

Early Route Priorities

Start by treating Border Town as a training level. Practice normal jumps, collect safe food items, pick up the early raygun, and learn how hazards and pits control your movement. You do not need every optional item before leaving.

After that, make the Pogo Shrine a priority. The pogo stick changes how the rest of the episode opens up, and several useful pickups or secrets become more realistic once you understand pogo timing. Do not judge every jump by normal jump height after you have it.

From there, follow nearby cities and shrines while watching the map. Some places contain required ship parts, while others give clues, score, or practice. The four major ship parts are the car battery, Everclear, joystick, and vacuum cleaner. You need all four to finish the episode, so do not let optional score detours take over.

Items and Pickups

Most pickups are collected by running into them, so your challenge is getting to the item safely and getting back out.

ItemBeginner Use
LollipopSmall score pickup, usually safe when on the main path
SodaBetter score pickup, often worth grabbing if no hazard is involved
PizzaMid-value pickup that can justify a small detour
BookHigh-value pickup, but check the return jump first
Teddy bearVery high-value pickup, often placed behind tougher movement
RaygunAdds five shots; save them for real blockers
KeycardOpens the same-colored door
Pogo stickLets Keen reach higher or otherwise blocked areas
Ship partsRequired objective items for finishing Episode 1

Use the status screen when you lose track of what you are carrying. If you are low on raygun shots, play patiently around enemies. If you already have the needed keycard, stop over-exploring the dangerous side of the level and open the matching door.

Enemies and Hazards

Marooned on Mars mixes creatures, robots, and old-school instant-danger terrain. Gargs are dangerous in tight spaces, especially near tunnels or platforms. Yorps can obstruct movement and make jumps awkward. Butler Robots may look less threatening, but being pushed off a platform can be as bad as taking a direct hit.

The safest beginner habit is to stop before a blind drop or tunnel. If a corridor looks suspicious, be ready for an enemy inside or just beyond it. If a room has fire below, plan both the landing and the exit before jumping.

Do not rely on the raygun to solve every enemy. Jumping cleanly, waiting for a safer opening, or skipping optional treasure is often stronger.

Version and Episode Notes

Current store packaging may present the broader Commander Keen or Complete Pack name, but this guide covers Episode 1: Marooned on Mars from Invasion of the Vorticons. The same package context can also include Episode 2 and Episode 3, and later Commander Keen games are separate. Check the title screen or launcher selection before using route advice.

The historical game is an MS-DOS platformer, and modern PC releases commonly wrap that experience for current systems. Expect keyboard-first controls, old save behavior, and level design that rewards patience more than speed on a first run.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not assume every Commander Keen episode works the same - This guide covers Episode 1 on Mars, not the later Vorticons chapters or Goodbye, Galaxy.

  2. Do not skip the Pogo Shrine for long - Many useful paths and pickups become easier once you have the pogo stick.

  3. Do not spend raygun shots on enemies you can safely avoid - Five extra shots can disappear quickly if you fire by reflex.

  4. Do not ignore same-color keycard logic - If a door blocks you, search for the matching card before forcing risky movement.

  5. Do not chase teddy bears over hazards while learning - High-value score items are optional when survival or ship parts are at stake.

  6. Do not rush through yellow tunnels and blind drops - Enemies, fire, ice, or pits can punish movement you did not scout.

  7. Do not leave the map unsaved before dangerous cities - Save before unfamiliar routes so exploration does not erase progress.

  8. Do not confuse optional score routes with required ship-part progress - Recovering the four parts matters more than clearing every detour.
