Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a World War II real-time tactics game developed by Pyro Studios. The original release was published by Eidos Interactive, while the current Steam listing is published by Kalypso Media Digital. This guide covers original Men of Courage fundamentals, not a full HD Remaster controls guide.
Content note: ESRB rates Commandos 2: Men of Courage T for Teen with Blood and Violence. This guide keeps war-combat discussion non-graphic and focused on tactical player decisions.
This is a beginner guide for stealth, line of sight, commando roles, disguises, inventory, saves, and mission planning. It is not a mission-by-mission walkthrough, bonus-book guide, perfect-score route, multiplayer setup guide, compatibility guide, or guide for Commandos 2 - HD Remaster.
Essential Tips
1. Start With the Briefing, Notebook, and Objectives
Commandos 2 missions are tactical puzzles before they are execution tests.
Check the mission briefing, objectives, clues, roster, and visible escape paths before moving anyone. A plan that works when you have the Spy, Thief, and Driver may fall apart when the mission asks you to solve the same kind of space with different specialists.
2. Watch Patrols Before Touching a Guard
The first minute should usually be observation.
Study patrol loops, pauses, overlapping sight cones, doors, windows, stairs, ladders, and alarms. If one guard is watched by another, removing the first guard without solving the watcher can make the route worse instead of better.
3. Treat Line of Sight as a Timer, Not Just a Cone
Long-range sight gives you a little time; short-range sight is dangerous.
Enemy vision has different ranges and alert states. Crawling, shadows, walls, and disguises can help in the outer sight area, but they are not permission to stand around in front of enemies. When a detection line appears, move or hide before suspicion becomes recognition.
4. Save After Stable Progress
A bad quicksave is just a faster restart.
Quicksave after a patrol is safely handled, an important item is recovered, a specialist reaches a secure position, or an objective step is complete. Avoid saving while spotted, split apart, trapped by patrol timing, or seconds away from an alarm.
5. Keep Every Specialist Useful
A single lost or stranded commando can break the mission.
Do not spend a commando’s health, disguise, ammunition, or unique tool just because a route looks close to working. Commandos 2 often expects the right specialist to be alive, equipped, and positioned later.
6. Match Obstacles to the Right Role
Wrong-character solutions are slow, noisy, or impossible.
Use the Green Beret for strength and close stealth, the Spy for stronger disguise play, the Sapper for mines and explosives, the Sniper for long-range removals, the Diver for water and grappling routes, the Driver for vehicle and trap work, the Thief for locks and small entrances, Natasha for distraction and sniper support, and Whiskey for item transport or barking distractions.
7. Use Disguises Carefully
A uniform reduces risk; it does not erase the rules.
Enemy uniforms can help commandos avoid long-range suspicion, but suspicious actions, close-range checks, officer behavior, and special enemies can still expose the plan. The Spy’s higher-rank uniforms are more powerful, but even he needs spacing and timing.
8. Pull Guards Instead of Chasing Them
Cigarettes, bottles, decoys, barking, and distractions create safer angles.
When a guard covers a route, do not default to rushing him. Bring up the sight cone, choose a spot outside other guards’ vision, lure him there, and deal with the body or bound enemy before the next patrol cycle.
9. Manage Bodies, Bound Enemies, and Footprints
The map reacts to evidence.
A body in a patrol path, tied enemies left in view, footprints through snow or sand, gunfire, explosions, and running can pull attention or trigger alarms. Hide evidence when you want stealth; use it deliberately only when the reaction is part of the plan.
10. Spread Healing and Key Items
Inventory mistakes can strand the squad.
Do not leave every medkit, food item, ammo pickup, or tool on one commando unless the mission plan requires it. Keep essential items near the specialist who needs them, and move supplies before triggering the next objective step.
11. Loot With Purpose
Enemy backpacks and containers are part of the solution space.
Inspect enemies, lockers, safes, rooms, and containers for uniforms, ammunition, keys, codes, food, first aid, cigarettes, bottles, and mission tools. Pickups matter most when you know which route or specialist they support.
12. Respect the Difficulty
Beginner advice lowers friction; it does not make Commandos 2 forgiving.
Current storefront and manual sources frame this as a demanding tactical game. Expect restarts, patient observation, and strict consequences when you make noise, waste tools, or complete an objective before the team can leave safely.
Commando Roles
| Character | Beginner Job | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Green Beret / Tiny | Strength, close stealth, poles, wires, doors, heavy objects | Needs clean timing and body control after close takedowns |
| Spy / Spooky | Disguises, deception, orders, quiet syringe work | Officers and special enemies can break disguise safety |
| Sapper / Inferno | Explosives, mines, heavy weapons, mine detection | Explosives are loud and often limited |
| Sniper / Duke | Long-range removals from safe positions | Shots and sniper ammo should solve targets other roles cannot reach |
| Natasha | Distraction, disguise situations, sniper support | Do not rely on her disguise around enemies who can identify her |
| Diver / Fins | Underwater movement, harpoon, knives, grappling routes | Water routes can include wildlife and isolated item needs |
| Driver / Tread | Vehicles, traps, gas or smoke tools | Vehicle plans still need safe entry, exit, and timing |
| Thief / Lupin | Lockpicks, windows, holes, hiding places, pickpocketing | He is excellent for access but cannot solve every guard alone |
| Whiskey | Item transport, barking distractions, mine detection | He supports the squad; he does not replace safe route planning |
Stealth and Disguise Flow
| Situation | First Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Mission starts | Read objectives and scan the full map | The roster, clues, and exit shape the solution |
| Guard blocks a route | Watch the cone and patrol cycle | Timing often beats improvisation |
| Outer sight covers a path | Crawl, use cover, or wait | Long-range detection is slower but still risky |
| Disguise is available | Check rank, distance, and suspicious actions | Uniforms are conditional tools, not invincibility |
| A guard is isolated | Lure him into an unwatched spot | Bodies and bound enemies are easier to manage there |
| Alarm starts | Hide, regroup, and wait or stabilize | Pushing deeper while hunted creates cascading mistakes |
| Objective is ready | Stage the squad and exit first | Completing the target can change patrols or pressure |
Inventory and Planning Habits
-
Check backpacks after safe takedowns - Uniforms, ammunition, keys, codes, and tools can change the route.
-
Keep healing distributed - A wounded commando cannot use food or first aid sitting across the map.
-
Confirm who needs the item - Lockpicks, explosives, sniper rifles, mine tools, and special keys should be near the specialist who can use them.
-
Do not stack blindly - Combining pickups on one character can make later swaps awkward if another commando needs the item.
-
Stage tools before triggers - Move explosives, traps, allies, uniforms, or getaway vehicles before starting a loud or irreversible objective step.
-
Use F10 and F11 as PC reminders - Object and enemy highlighting can help on PC, but key behavior can differ by version and platform.
Controls and Version Caveats
| Area | Guidance | Player Check |
|---|---|---|
| Original PC controls | Manual backs quicksave/load, Notebook, camera, zoom, F10, and F11 systems | Current Steam/GOG key behavior and keyboard layouts |
| Current PC compatibility | Steam update backs a Windows 10-era compatibility claim | Windows 11, Steam Deck/Proton, ultrawide, high refresh, and community patches |
| Multiplayer | Steam/manual back PC co-op and older IP/LAN-style setup | Current multiplayer usability, security, and connection behavior |
| Console versions | StrategyWiki/Commandos Wiki back PS2 and Xbox existence | Console controls, tutorial differences, and availability |
| Mac version | Wiki sources back later Mac coverage | Current macOS support and whether older Mac builds still run |
| HD Remaster | Official page backs reworked controls, UI, tutorial, and achievements | Treat as a separate guide because controls and features differ |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not move before reading the briefing - Objectives, clues, roster, and exit conditions define the whole mission.
-
Do not rush the first visible guard - Overlapping sight cones can punish a clean takedown immediately.
-
Do not trust a disguise at point-blank range - Rank, distance, and suspicious actions still matter.
-
Do not leave bodies or tied enemies in patrol paths - Discovery can turn a quiet route into alarm pressure.
-
Do not run near enemies when stealth matters - Sound can expose a route even when sight cones look safe.
-
Do not give every healing item to one commando - Injured specialists need recovery where they actually are.
-
Do not waste sniper shots or explosives on easy targets - Limited tools should solve targets that other roles cannot.
-
Do not trigger objectives before staging the exit - The squad may still need to regroup, board a vehicle, or leave safely.
-
Do not ignore containers and enemy backpacks - Keys, uniforms, ammo, food, and mission tools are often route-critical.
-
Do not mix original and HD Remaster assumptions - Controls, UI, achievements, and platform behavior can differ.
