Don’t Starve Together, developed and published by Klei Entertainment, is a co-op survival craft game about gathering resources, managing hunger, health, and sanity, building a base, surviving seasons, and keeping the group alive in The Constant.
Content note: Don’t Starve Together is rated T for Teen by ESRB with Fantasy Violence and Crude Humor. This guide keeps the dark survival themes, ghosts, hostile creatures, and shadow threats non-graphic.
This guide is for new groups starting normal co-op worlds. It is not a current character tier list, Cursed Confrontation guide, boss route, exact recipe chart, skill-tree guide, or server-admin manual.
Patch note: This guide is scoped to the release 740477 era after Klei’s July 6, 2026 hotfix. Check character balance, events, skill trees, recipes, servers, caves, and platform details after major updates.
Essential Tips
1. Agree on the Server Before the First Day
A bad setting surprise can waste a whole world.
Before everyone scatters, confirm the mode, PvP setting, caves, mods, rollback expectations, and whether the server is private, friends-only, public, or dedicated. Survival, Endless, and Wilderness handle death differently, so the group should know what happens when someone becomes a ghost.
2. Spend Day 1 on Light and Basic Materials
Night is the first hard check.
Pick up flint, twigs, grass, logs, and easy food while the map is still safe enough to explore. Have a torch or campfire plan before night. Do not spend the first day arguing over the perfect base location while nobody has light, tools, or food.
3. Treat Hunger, Health, and Sanity as One System
Solving only hunger still gets players killed.
Hunger keeps you from starving, health keeps you alive through damage and weather, and sanity controls how dangerous the world feels when shadow threats start pressing in. Good food, armor, safe light, weather gear, and sanity recovery all matter.
4. Build Science Before Decorating
Early crafting unlocks survival options.
Get a Science Machine going, then turn that into practical tools: backpack, spear, armor, Crock Pot, Fire Pit, storage, and later stronger crafting stations. First-time prototypes can also help sanity, so crafting useful early items is often better than waiting until the group is already struggling.
5. Pick a Useful Base, Not a Perfect One
A starter base should reduce walking and prevent disasters.
Look for central access to resources, roads, rocks, grass, twigs, food sources, and useful nearby biomes. Avoid building directly on top of beefalo, pigs, spider dens, marsh danger, or tight burnable clusters. Leave walking space between important structures so one fire or enemy does not ruin everything.
6. Divide Jobs Without Splitting the Team Forever
Roles work best when everyone can still help.
One player can scout, one can gather, one can cook or farm, one can build, and one can handle combat prep. That does not mean five solo games. Regroup before hounds, night travel, caves, bosses, and seasonal transitions.
7. Make Food Infrastructure Early
Loose berries are not a winter plan.
Use the Crock Pot, storage, farms/gardens, drying or spoilage control, and repeatable food sources as soon as the group has the materials. Learn a few reliable recipes in-game, but check exact recipe details because DST food values and recipe availability can change across updates.
8. Use Seasons as Deadlines
Each season asks a different question.
Autumn is usually preparation time. Winter asks whether you have heat, food, and defense. Spring asks whether you can handle rain, wetness, lightning, and hostile seasonal behavior. Summer asks whether you can prevent overheating and fire damage. Server settings can change timing, so check the world you are actually playing.
9. Wear Armor Before You Learn Combat
Practice kiting with a backup plan.
A spear without armor is false confidence. Put on armor before hounds, spiders, clockworks, bosses, or unfamiliar enemies. Learn the rhythm: bait an attack, step away, punish the recovery, then retreat before the next swing.
10. Explore With a Purpose
Mapping is survival, not sightseeing.
Scout roads, biome borders, wormholes, rocky areas, savanna, pig areas, swamp edges, cave entrances, deserts, and ocean access. Mark dangers mentally and report useful finds. Early exploration should answer where to base, where food comes from, where rocks and gold are, and where not to panic-run later.
11. Keep Emergency Kits in Base and on Players
The rescue plan should exist before the rescue.
Keep spare armor, weapons, light, healing, food, seasonal gear, and revival materials where players can reach them. A base with one precious spear and no backups is not ready for hounds, ghosts, or bad weather.
12. Leave Advanced Content for Prepared Groups
Caves, ruins, ocean routes, and bosses punish curiosity.
You can explore deep systems later. First, prove the group can survive seasons, feed itself, revive deaths, handle hounds, repair armor, and travel safely. Then start planning caves, ruins, ocean trips, and major boss content.
Co-op Role Checklist
| Role | Main Job | Beginner Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Scout | Map roads, biomes, wormholes, dangers, and resources | Carry light and return before the group loses track |
| Gatherer | Bring grass, twigs, logs, rocks, flint, gold, and food | Refill shared basics before personal projects |
| Cook/Farmer | Turn mixed ingredients into reliable food and manage spoilage | Do not let everyone eat raw emergency supplies first |
| Builder | Place fire, science, storage, food, and seasonal structures | Space burnable structures and keep paths clear |
| Fighter | Prepare armor, weapons, hound response, and safe pulls | Do not start fights the group cannot support |
| Reviver | Track ghosts, hearts, touch stones, and mode rules | Revive quickly when safe, but do not create a second death |
Season Checklist
| Season | Main Threat | Beginner Prep |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn | Complacency | Explore, base, craft science, cook, store supplies, make armor |
| Winter | Freezing and long nights | Heat source, thermal plan, food stock, armor, emergency fire |
| Spring | Rain, wetness, lightning, hostile behavior | Rain gear, lightning protection, dry storage, backup food |
| Summer | Overheating and fires | Cooling plan, base spacing, fire prevention, cave/surface plan |
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Server mode | Death and world continuation vary by mode | Check Survival, Endless, or Wilderness rules before starting |
| Caves toggle | Caves/Ruins may depend on server setup | Confirm before planning cave resources or routes |
| Ghosts | Dead players can still move and may be revived | Coordinate revives instead of letting ghosts linger |
| Prototyping | Crafting stations unlock recipes and can help sanity | Prototype useful tools before leaving base |
| Crock Pot recipes | Ingredients resolve into recipe outputs or Wet Goop | Learn reliable staples, then check exact recipes |
| Wetness | Rain can affect sanity, fuel, items, and season safety | Prepare Spring gear and protected storage |
| Wildfire risk | Summer can punish tight burnable bases | Leave space and build with fire control in mind |
| Armor durability | Protection can break mid-fight | Carry backups before hounds or bosses |
| World settings | Timings and hazards can differ by server | Trust the current world’s settings over old advice |
| Patch volatility | Characters, skill trees, events, and balance change | Check current details after major updates |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not start the server without checking mode and caves - The group may build plans around rules that are not enabled.
-
Do not enter night without light - Darkness can kill faster than hunger.
-
Do not settle the first pretty clearing immediately - Explore enough to know where food, rocks, roads, and danger are.
-
Do not eat every easy food on sight - The group needs ingredients, reserves, and repeatable food sources.
-
Do not build every structure in one tight pile - Fire, bosses, hounds, and mistakes punish crowded bases.
-
Do not ignore sanity until shadow creatures attack - Recover sanity before it becomes another combat problem.
-
Do not fight without armor - Even small enemies can turn one mistake into a death spiral.
-
Do not wander alone during hounds or seasonal danger - A separated player is harder to rescue and easier to lose.
-
Do not leave ghosts waiting beside base - Revive when safe or the remaining players carry extra pressure.
-
Do not copy old character, recipe, or event advice blindly - Check the current patch and server settings first.
