Don't Starve Beginner Tips - First Week, Sanity, and Winter Prep

Don't Starve beginner tips for the first week, hunger, health, sanity, crafting, Crock Pot basics, base planning, winter prep, Deerclops, and DLC boundaries.

On this page

Don’t Starve is a single-player wilderness survival game by Klei Entertainment where the first lesson is not a fixed route. You start with almost nothing, learn by dying, and turn each run into better habits around light, food, sanity, crafting, base placement, and winter preparation.

Content note: ratings describe fantasy violence, crude humor, dark survival tone, hostile creatures, cartoony combat, and some macabre pig imagery. This guide keeps that content non-graphic and focused on play.

This guide is for the base Don’t Starve experience. It is not a Don’t Starve Together guide, not a full Adventure Mode walkthrough, not a character-unlock table, and not a Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked, or Hamlet route. If you own DLC, use the base DS option for a clean original-game run.

Essential Tips

1. Treat the First Day as a Light Deadline

Night is the first hard test.

Before you worry about a permanent home, collect basic materials for tools, food, and a light source. Grass, twigs, flint, logs, berries, and carrots matter because they turn an empty inventory into an axe, fire, torch option, and food buffer. If night arrives and you cannot make light, the run can end immediately.

2. Explore Before You Settle

A base is only useful if the map around it can feed and protect you.

Spend the early days revealing roads, biomes, food sources, rocks, grass, saplings, beefalo or pigs, spiders, ponds, and obvious danger zones. A rushed base beside poor resources creates long walks for every basic task. Pick a site after you know where the important nearby systems are.

3. Keep Hunger From Becoming Health Damage

Food is a timer, not a bonus.

Hunger drains as you play. When it empties, your health starts taking damage until you eat or die. Do not wait for starvation before reacting; carry emergency food, cook when useful, and remember that food can spoil.

4. Do Not Ignore Sanity

Low sanity changes the game from stressful to dangerous.

Darkness, monsters, rain, bad food, and some magic can push sanity down. Food, clothing, friendly pigs, and sleeping can help bring it back up. When sanity gets low enough, shadow threats become more than atmosphere, so recover before a normal task turns into a fight.

5. Build Science Around a Fire Pit

Crafting stations are how a camp becomes a camp.

A Fire Pit gives you a return point. A Science Machine opens early prototypes. An Alchemy Engine expands the plan further. Keep your main crafting area close enough to light that you can prototype, sort items, cook, and plan through the evening instead of wasting daylight.

6. Make Food Infrastructure Early

The Crock Pot is the difference between scavenging and planning.

The Crock Pot combines four accepted ingredients into dishes if the recipe matches; bad combinations can become Wet Goop. Exact recipes and values differ by base game, DLC, and Don’t Starve Together, so use a recipe reference for exact tables. For this guide, the key lesson is simpler: build food processing before winter forces every mistake to matter.

7. Cache Supplies Instead of Carrying Everything

Inventory space is part of survival.

One stack of a useful resource is often enough while scouting. Store extra logs, grass, twigs, rocks, gold, food ingredients, silk, and refined materials near your camp instead of walking around overloaded. Chests are not glamorous, but they turn random gathering into a plan.

8. Prepare for Winter Before It Starts

Winter punishes players who only react after the weather changes.

On default-style base-game runs, winter pressure begins around day 21, but exact timing can change with settings and expansion modes. Before then, secure steady food, fuel, crafting stations, storage, health recovery, and a way to handle cold. Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked, and Hamlet change seasonal assumptions, so do not copy a DLC calendar into a base-game run without checking it.

9. Move Deerclops Trouble Away From Camp

A winter boss near your structures is a base problem, not just a combat problem.

Deerclops can arrive in winter with warnings and can damage structures in an area. If you hear the warning and are not ready to fight, move away from important builds so the encounter does not become a demolition event. Save exact kill tactics for a boss guide after validating current behavior.

10. Let Death Unlock Knowledge

A failed run is still progress.

Don’t Starve expects repeated attempts. Surviving days contributes to character progression in single-player, and every death teaches a better map habit, food habit, combat habit, or winter-prep habit. Restarting with a clear lesson is better than dragging a doomed base forward.

11. Leave Adventure Mode for Later

Maxwell’s Door is not your first-week objective.

Adventure Mode is the story mode, with chapter objectives, item carryover limits, and route pressure. Learn the basic survival loop in Sandbox first, then use a dedicated Adventure Mode guide when you are ready to chase story progression.

12. Keep Don’t Starve Together Advice Separate

DST looks familiar, but many assumptions change.

Don’t Starve Together redesigns characters and adds multiplayer-specific systems. Recipes, seasonal advice, character picks, and boss routes from DST can be wrong or incomplete for base Don’t Starve. Use them only after checking that the mechanic applies to the version you are actually playing.

First-Week Priorities

PhaseWhat To DoWhy It Matters
Day 1Gather grass, twigs, flint, logs, and food; make light before nightSolves the first immediate death check
Days 2-3Scout roads, food, rocks, grass, saplings, pigs, beefalo, spiders, and hazardsGives you enough map knowledge to choose a real base
Early campBuild a Fire Pit, Science Machine, Crock Pot path, and basic storageConverts random supplies into repeatable survival
Before winterStock food, fuel, health options, crafting materials, and cold plansWinter makes slow correction much harder
Winter warningLeave key structures if Deerclops pressure startsReduces the chance of losing the camp to area damage
After deathNote the specific failure and change one habit next runProgress comes from learned routes and decisions

Base Game vs DLC

ModeBeginner Caveat
Base Don’t StarveUse this guide’s assumptions: single-player Sandbox, Summer/Winter framing, core survival loop
Reign of GiantsAdds seasons, characters, creatures, biomes, and challenges; Spring/Autumn starts change early priorities
ShipwreckedMoves survival to a tropical archipelago with different biomes, seasons, and creatures
HamletRequires base Don’t Starve, works with or without the other DLC, and adds Pigmen town/Aporkalypse systems
Don’t Starve TogetherStandalone multiplayer branch with redesigned character assumptions and separate balance

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not enter night without fire or a torch - Light is the first survival requirement.

  2. Do not build your permanent base on day one - Scout the map before committing to a weak location.

  3. Do not eat every food item the moment you find it - Hunger, spoilage, cooking, and emergency reserves all matter.

  4. Do not treat sanity loss as cosmetic - Low sanity can create real combat threats.

  5. Do not leave your Science Machine and Fire Pit far apart - Crafting in darkness wastes time and fuel.

  6. Do not learn recipes from the wrong version - Base game, DLC, and DST food rules can differ.

  7. Do not carry your whole base in your pockets - Store extra materials so exploration stays flexible.

  8. Do not wait until winter starts to prepare - Food, fuel, warmth, and health resources need setup time.

  9. Do not fight Deerclops inside your camp - Move the threat away from structures before deciding whether to fight.

  10. Do not enter Adventure Mode just because you found the door - Learn core survival first.

  11. Do not copy Don’t Starve Together character advice into single-player - Character availability and designs are not the same.

  12. Do not restart without naming the cause of death - The next run should fix one specific mistake.
