DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two Tips

Spoiler-light tips for Sentinel Hammer use, new enemies, Escalation Encounters, traversal, and Dark Lord preparation in The Ancient Gods Part Two.

On this page

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two is a late-game campaign expansion built for players who already know the base game’s rhythm: move constantly, spend every tool, refill through aggression, and read each demon’s special rule quickly. It adds the Sentinel Hammer, new enemy variants, Meat Hook traversal points, Escalation Encounters, and the Dark Lord finale, so treating it like ordinary DOOM Eternal will make the first mission rougher than it needs to be.

Content warning: this mature-rated expansion includes non-graphic references here to intense demon combat, blood and gore, and strong language descriptors.

Essential Tips

1. Enter With Base-Game Habits Ready

Part Two assumes you can already juggle movement, ammo, armor, health, Blood Punch, weapon mods, and target priority under pressure. Before starting, warm up in a familiar combat arena or replay a late base-game mission. You want your hands ready for quick weapon swaps, grenades, dashes, jumps, and Glory Kills before the expansion starts layering new rules on top.

Do not worry about playing perfectly on the first run. The better goal is to preserve the loop: move before you aim too long, refill before you are empty, and turn every weak demon into a supply opportunity. If you arrive rusty, lower the difficulty or use a practice space until the rhythm returns.

2. Treat the Sentinel Hammer as a Reset Button

The Sentinel Hammer is the expansion’s most important new tool. It stuns enemies and helps extract supplies, which means it is not just a panic attack. Use it to interrupt a crowded arena, buy a moment to breathe, and refill the ammo, armor, and health that keep the rest of your arsenal moving.

As the expansion progresses, hammer upgrades improve its supply value and stun duration. That makes a charged hammer especially valuable before dense fights and boss pressure. If you spend it casually on a nearly finished wave, you may enter the next spike without the tool that could have stabilized it.

3. Use Escalation Encounters for Power, Not Pride

Escalation Encounters have two parts. The first part is required and gives a Sentinel Hammer upgrade. The second part is optional and rewards a cosmetic. That distinction matters. Take the mandatory wave seriously because it improves your tool kit, but do not feel obligated to grind the optional wave immediately if it is draining lives or focus.

For a first clear, consider finishing the required wave, learning the mission, and returning later for optional cosmetics. The second wave is meant to be harder, and it is easier to approach once you know the arena layout, demon mix, and pickup routes.

4. Match the New Enemies to Their Rules

Part Two’s new enemy variants are designed to punish autopilot. Stone Imps resist most ordinary answers, so lean on the Combat Shotgun’s automatic fire mode or hammer pressure. Riot Soldiers block frontal damage, so move to the side or rear, or use explosive angles that hit behind their shields.

Cursed Prowlers are priority threats because their curse can damage you over time and interfere with key movement or lock-on options. If one tags you, switch immediately into removal mode and secure the Blood Punch answer. Screecher Zombies are a trap in crowded rooms: killing them can empower nearby enemies, so reposition and avoid stray damage when they are present.

5. Keep Blood Punch Available More Often

Blood Punch matters even more here because several threats and recovery moments depend on it. Do not spend every charge just because a target is close. When Cursed Prowlers are in the mission, having a charge ready can be the difference between a quick correction and a spiraling arena loss.

Build the charge deliberately with Glory Kills and fodder control. If you use Blood Punch for damage, ask whether the trade helped you survive the next thirty seconds. In this expansion, the answer is often yes, but only when the timing solves a real problem.

6. Chain Meat Hook Grapple Points Calmly

The Super Shotgun’s Meat Hook grapple points turn traversal into its own test. Many sequences expect double jumps, dashes, and angled momentum around corners. Do not mash through these sections. Look for the next point, push your movement away from the grapple point when the route curves, and use air control before spending every dash.

If a traversal puzzle keeps failing, slow down and watch the intended line. Armor shards, green cues, climbable walls, and dash refills usually show where your momentum should carry you. Clean traversal saves health before the next arena starts.

7. Spend Heavy Ammo to Prevent Arena Collapse

Part Two can throw mixed groups at you quickly. Do not hoard BFG, rockets, ballista shots, or strong mod options until an arena is already lost. Use heavy tools when they remove a dangerous anchor, clear enough space to move, or stop a buffed group from taking over the room.

The Sentinel Hammer helps refill the economy, but it works best when paired with smart spending. Burn ammo and cooldowns to solve the right threat, then use fodder demons, flame, chainsaw timing, Glory Kills, and hammer windows to rebuild.

8. Prepare for the Dark Lord Like a Duel

The final fight is not just another crowd arena. Go in with the habit of keeping a hammer charge, reading punish windows, and avoiding greedy shots when the boss is not open. If you attack at the wrong time or take careless hits, the fight can drag out and erase your progress.

Treat each phase as a controlled exchange. Refill from summoned demons, reset with the hammer when the window is right, and keep your movement disciplined. Winning is less about frantic damage and more about refusing to feed the boss free recovery.

9. Use Difficulty and Accessibility Options Early

PlayStation’s listing highlights adjustable difficulty, control reminders, tutorial reminders, practice options, pausing in offline play, and several visual or audio assists. Use those tools before frustration rewires your habits. A lower setting can help you learn enemy rules, hammer timing, and grapple routes without turning every encounter into a wall.

Once the flow clicks, raise pressure again. DOOM Eternal is at its best when the challenge is high enough to demand mastery but not so high that you stop experimenting.

10. Save Completion Cleanup for a Second Pass

Part Two has codex entries, milestones, cosmetics, optional Escalation waves, and combat challenges worth cleaning up, but first-run checklist play can make the expansion feel choppy. Clear the mission, learn how each new system behaves, and note obvious side paths without forcing every reward immediately.

The second pass is when completion work becomes smoother. You will know which arenas need a charged hammer, where traversal routes bend, and when optional waves are worth taking on.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not ignore the Sentinel Hammer - It is central to crowd control, supply recovery, and several late fights.

  2. Do not treat optional Escalation waves as required - Take the upgrade wave first and return for cosmetics when ready.

  3. Do not shoot Riot Soldiers only from the front - Move around them or use angles that bypass the shield.

  4. Do not kill Screecher Zombies by accident - Their death can empower nearby enemies and turn a manageable fight ugly.

  5. Do not waste Blood Punch before Cursed Prowlers appear - Keep a charge when the mission starts using curse pressure.

  6. Do not mash through Meat Hook traversal - Look for the route, control momentum, then spend jumps and dashes.

  7. Do not hoard major ammo forever - Spend strong tools before an arena collapses, then rebuild through the combat loop.

  8. Do not attack the Dark Lord greedily - Wait for real openings and keep the hammer ready for recovery.

  9. Do not chase every cosmetic on the first clear - Learn the missions first, then clean up optional rewards.
