Dune II Beginner Tips - Spice, Bases, and Combat

Dune II beginner tips for spice harvesting, refinery setup, concrete foundations, power, scouting, defense, production, and base attacks.

On this page

Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty is a single-player, top-down real-time strategy game developed by Westwood Studios; MobyGames lists Virgin Games, Eclipse Productions, and Ocean Software as publishers across releases. You choose a House, harvest spice on Arrakis, turn it into credits, build a base, and use that economy to survive attacks and destroy enemy forces.

This guide is for PC/DOS-style beginner fundamentals. It is not a full mission walkthrough, Genesis Battle for Arrakis guide, Dune 2000 guide, port setup guide, House tier list, or exact unit-stat reference.

Essential Tips

1. Choose a House as a Campaign Commitment

Atreides, Harkonnen, and Ordos share the core game, but they do not finish the same way.

Your first choice decides the campaign identity and later House-specific tools. For a first run, pick the House whose style you want to learn, then focus on the common fundamentals: spice, concrete, power, scouting, production, and base destruction.

2. Treat Spice as the Real Timer

Credits come from harvesters doing their work.

The first missions teach the economy before they ask for full enemy-base destruction. Keep the harvester safe, get spice moving into a refinery, and spend credits on the next useful structure or unit instead of staring at a large bank with no plan.

3. Build on Rock and Favor Concrete

A cheap foundation can save expensive repairs later.

Structures must be placed on rock or concrete, and buildings without proper concrete start in worse condition. Concrete also makes base layout more deliberate, which matters once you need refineries, power, production, and defenses to fit around each other.

4. Put the Refinery Where Harvesting Makes Sense

Long harvester trips slow the whole base.

Your refinery is not just another building. It is the point where spice turns into credits, so place it with nearby spice access in mind when the map allows it. If the harvester path is awkward or exposed, your economy becomes fragile before the fighting starts.

5. Scout in Controlled Pushes

Exploration finds spice, enemies, and trouble.

The map begins shrouded, and moving units into darkness reveals terrain. Scout enough to find spice and likely attack directions, but do not send your starting force so far away that the base is unprotected when enemies arrive.

6. Defend Before the First Big Attack

A base that cannot survive contact cannot use its economy.

Later missions reward a stable defense before a full push. Keep units near likely attack paths, cover more than one side of the base, and add production before committing everything to one attack.

7. Keep Power Ahead of Demand

Wind traps are part of production, not decoration.

Power shortages slow your base and can make damage problems worse. When production starts to feel sluggish, do not only blame unit cost. Check whether your power base is keeping up with the structures you added.

8. Repair With Timing in Mind

Repairs cost credits and pause production.

Damaged buildings operate worse, but repairs are not free. Repair important damaged structures before they collapse or stall your economy, but avoid pausing a key production building at the exact moment you need units.

9. Build Enough Production to Reinforce

A single wave usually is not the whole war.

Major attacks go better when new units are already on the way. If your first push loses vehicles, restart production immediately and send replacements forward instead of waiting until the army is gone.

10. Attack the Enemy’s Ability to Rebuild

Factories and the Construction Yard matter more than random targets.

When you reach the enemy base, do not spend the whole attack chasing every defender. Production buildings and the Construction Yard are high-value targets because they control how quickly the enemy recovers.

11. Respect Sand, Spice Blows, and Sandworms

Arrakis itself is part of the fight.

Spice fields sit on sand, but sand is also where sandworms threaten units. Keep an eye on harvesters and exposed vehicles, and be careful around terrain features that can turn into spice fields when triggered.

12. Do Not Expect Modern RTS Comforts

Dune II is foundational, but it is also old.

Its interface, production flow, mission structure, and port differences do not behave like later Command & Conquer or modern RTS games. Play deliberately, save before risky commitments, and check port-specific behavior before trusting exact controls or route advice.

Economy and Base Priorities

PriorityWhy It MattersBeginner Habit
Construction YardStarts your base and structure chainProtect it and keep build space around it

Combat and Map Habits

  1. Use the early economy missions as lessons - Harvesting and safe base setup matter before aggressive attacks.

  2. Find the attack direction - Scouting tells you where to defend and where the enemy base probably sits.

  3. Keep defenders close enough to focus fire - Spread too thin, your units arrive one at a time and die one at a time.

  4. Do not wall the whole map by instinct - Fortify the direction that matters instead of wasting time and credits on decorative walls.

  5. Add factories before a long attack - Reinforcements should be building while the first army is moving.

  6. Use tougher units to screen fragile attackers - Later long-range units are more useful when protected by tanks or other frontline vehicles.

  7. Target production first - Factories and the Construction Yard are usually better attack targets than every unit in sight.

  8. Retreat when the push fails - Pull back, rebuild, and attack again instead of feeding the last few units into a defended base.

  9. Watch harvester travel and safety - A dead or delayed harvester can turn a winning position into a stalled one.

  10. Treat port advice carefully - The Genesis/Mega Drive version has interface and save/progression differences, so PC/DOS habits may vary there.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not attack the mission 2 base just because you found it - The early game is teaching spice income; fighting too soon can waste the economy you need.

  2. Do not place expensive structures on poor foundations casually - Damaged buildings produce worse and force repair decisions.

  3. Do not let power fall behind the base - Slow production makes every defense and attack arrive late.

  4. Do not send every unit scouting at once - Exploration helps, but an empty base invites losses.

  5. Do not stockpile spice while production is idle - Credits only help when they become refineries, power, factories, defenses, or units.

  6. Do not chase defenders while enemy factories keep working - Destroy the infrastructure that keeps replacing them.

  7. Do not leave fragile long-range units unprotected - Launchers and other support tools need a front line.

  8. Do not ignore damaged key buildings - A hurt refinery, factory, or power structure can quietly slow the whole plan.

  9. Do not assume every version saves and controls the same way - Battle for Arrakis and console-style ports need their own route notes.

  10. Do not turn one failed attack into a full collapse - Retreat, rebuild production, and hit the important targets again.
