EarthBound Beginnings Tips - Melodies, PSI, and Survival

EarthBound Beginnings tips for melodies, random battles, phones, ATMs, PSI, party roles, Franklin Badge safety, and early survival.

On this page

EarthBound Beginnings is the official English version of the first Mother game, developed by Ape and Pax Softnica and published by Nintendo. It is not the Super Nintendo sequel EarthBound, Mother 3, a fan translation, a remake, or the Japan-only Mother 1+2 compilation. Expect an older, sharper-edged NES RPG: random battles, limited inventory, phone saves, ATM banking, and routes that often ask you to investigate odd objects rather than follow a modern quest log.

This guide focuses on the official EarthBound Beginnings release and its NES rules. Modern releases may add platform conveniences, but the core adventure is still about Ninten collecting eight melodies, surviving random encounters, and building a party that can handle long walks between safe towns.

Difficulty note: This is a beginner-focused guide, but the game itself is demanding because frequent random encounters, limited inventory space, and long routes can punish poor preparation.

Essential Tips

1. Save by Calling Dad Whenever You Reach a Phone

Progress is only secure after a call.

EarthBound Beginnings saves through phones, not an automatic checkpoint system. Black phones are free, pay phones cost a little money, and calling Dad also tells you how much experience you need for the next level. Make phone calls part of your town routine before buying gear, entering a dungeon, or walking into a new region.

2. Treat ATMs as Your Real Wallet

Battle money is not useful until you withdraw it.

Winning fights adds money to your account, but you still need the Cash Card and an ATM to spend it. Before shopping, healing at paid services, or staying at hotels, check whether you actually have cash on hand. Deposit extra money before a risky route so a defeat does not leave you broke.

3. Level Near Home Before Chasing the First Town

The opening is safer when free healing is nearby.

The early enemies can punish a low-level Ninten. After the house events, spend time close enough to return to Ninten’s mother for free healing. This gives you levels, money in the account, and a better chance of surviving Podunk, the cemetery route, and the zoo.

4. Use Check Like a Main Command

Important progress can hide behind ordinary objects.

Check is not just flavor text. The opening teaches this with the doll melody, the dog and basement key, basement presents, trash cans, and later melody triggers. If a place feels important, inspect it. Talk handles people and animals; Check handles objects and clues.

5. Track the Eight Melodies From the Start

The melodies are the campaign spine.

Your long-term goal is collecting eight forgotten melodies. Some come from obvious story moments, while others require tasks, exploration, or the right command. Use the State screen to review melodies and avoid wandering late in the game without knowing what you missed.

6. Keep Healing Items Even After Learning PSI

PP runs out faster than danger does.

Ninten can learn healing and support PSI, and Ana later becomes a powerful PSI user, but PP is limited. Burgers, fries, medicines, and other practical items keep you alive when a dungeon or overworld route lasts longer than expected. Do not spend every inventory slot on gear upgrades.

7. Respect Random Encounters

The old-school encounter rate shapes the difficulty.

EarthBound Beginnings does not show enemies on the map like its sequel. Long walks can become several fights in a row, and a safe-looking return trip can still drain HP and PP. Leave town prepared, turn back before the party collapses, and use Run when a fight is not worth the cost.

8. Let Temporary Allies Do Real Work

Pippi is more than a rescue objective.

During the cemetery sequence, Pippi temporarily joins Ninten. Use that window to gain levels and stabilize the early game before returning her. The same principle applies later: when the party changes, reassess your route, healing, and damage plan before sprinting forward.

9. Keep the Franklin Badge on Ninten

One reflected beam can decide an early boss.

The Franklin Badge is a major safety item for the zoo boss route because it can reflect the lethal beam that would otherwise end the fight immediately. Do not bury it in storage or on the wrong character when heading into alien-heavy areas.

10. Build Around Each Character’s Role

The party is uneven by design.

Ninten is balanced and valuable for healing/support PSI. Lloyd lacks PSI but can use special weapons and becomes more useful when protected. Ana is physically fragile but brings the strongest PSI and better healing. Teddy, when present, is a physical powerhouse with no PSI. Item distribution should follow those jobs.

11. Use Guard, Check, and Run Instead of Only Fighting

The battle menu has more answers than attack spam.

Fight is reliable, but Check can reveal weaknesses, Guard can buy a safer turn, Goods lets you use emergency items, and Run can save resources. Auto Fight is convenient only when you already know the area is harmless; do not hand control to the game during dangerous or unfamiliar fights.

12. Spend Money on Survival Before Convenience

Hotels and hospitals matter, but upgrades matter too.

Town services restore HP, PP, KO’d allies, and some ailments, yet they can empty your cash quickly. Buy practical weapon and armor upgrades, keep medicine money, and use free healing when available. Paying for a hotel before a serious route is smart; paying every time you take light damage is wasteful.

Early Route Priorities

Start by clearing Ninten’s house thoroughly. Defeat the animated threats, Check the doll after the fight to learn the first melody, call Dad, get the basement key by inspecting the dog, and collect the basement items. The Great Grandfather’s Diary matters later, so do not treat the basement as optional.

Once outside, do not rush straight into the wider world. Level near home, then move through Podunk carefully. Talk to townspeople, accept the cemetery rescue, and use Pippi’s temporary presence to make Ninten stronger before reporting back. When the pet-store canary looks overpriced, refuse the price rather than assuming you must grind for it.

The zoo route is your first major check on preparation. Bring full HP, healing supplies, the Franklin Badge, and enough levels that regular animals are not draining everything before the boss. Against Starman Jr., attack steadily, heal with LifeUp or items when Ninten is low, and let the badge protect you from the worst beam.

After important route beats, review melodies and money before leaving town. EarthBound Beginnings is open enough to let you wander, but wandering with no cash, no healing, and no idea which melody you need next turns exploration into punishment.

Party and Battle Habits

Ninten should usually carry core healing items and dependable equipment because he is present from start to finish. Lloyd benefits from offense items and protection, since he has no PSI and can feel weak when he first joins. Ana needs defensive care because losing her can make the game much harder; her PSI is powerful enough that keeping her alive is often more important than squeezing out one more attack.

Watch turn order and damage trends instead of waiting for emergencies. Speed affects who acts first, so a slow healer may not save a character who is already too low. If enemies hit harder than expected, Guard and healing early can prevent a collapse. If a fight costs more than it pays, running is a valid choice.

Use towns as reset points. Withdraw money, buy what you need, call Dad, heal, and then commit to a route. When your inventory fills up, decide what supports the next leg: healing, ailment recovery, key items, or character-specific combat tools. Old RPG inventory pressure is part of the challenge.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not assume EarthBound knowledge carries over cleanly - This first game has random encounters, a different save flow, and rougher early balance.

  2. Do not leave town without cash - Battle earnings sit in the bank until you withdraw them from an ATM.

  3. Do not forget to call Dad - Reaching a new phone means you should save before taking another risk.

  4. Do not skip the Check command - Melodies, keys, presents, and clues can depend on inspecting objects.

  5. Do not return Pippi immediately if Ninten is weak - Her temporary help can make early leveling much less painful.

  6. Do not store the Franklin Badge before the zoo - It is a critical answer to a dangerous early beam attack.

  7. Do not rely only on PSI healing - PP is limited, and long routes can outlast your psychic safety net.

  8. Do not let Lloyd carry your whole damage plan early - Support him with items and equipment until his role improves.

  9. Do not ignore Ana’s safety - Her PSI value is high enough that losing her can derail a route.

  10. Do not press Auto Fight in unknown areas - Manual command choices matter when enemies have dangerous attacks or status effects.
