Factorio, developed and published by Wube Software LTD., is a factory-building automation game about mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production, and defending the growing factory.

This guide is for a first unmodded freeplay factory on the stable 2.0 branch. It leaves exact blueprint books, megabase ratios, speedrun build orders, Space Age planet routing, modded overhaul advice, and 2.1 experimental-only behavior to dedicated version-specific guides.

Essential Tips

1. Play The Tutorial Before Freeplay

The campaign teaches the first machine loop faster than trial and error.

Factorio starts simply, then piles systems on top of each other. Use the tutorial or campaign lessons to learn movement, mining, crafting, placing machines, rotating structures, fueling machines, and reading the interface before starting a long freeplay map.

2. Start Near The Basic Resources

Iron, copper, coal, stone, and water decide how comfortable the first hour feels.

Before committing to a map, check that the spawn area has solid access to iron ore, copper ore, coal, and stone. Water nearby also matters because early steam power needs an offshore pump. Crude oil and uranium are later problems, so do not restart just because they are not beside the starting patch.

3. Use Default Or Rich Resources While Learning

A forgiving map lets you practice the factory, not the seed.

The world generator can make resources and enemies more or less common. Default is a fine first setting, and Rich Resources can reduce early pressure if you mostly want to learn automation. Peaceful mode is also an option if enemy attacks are blocking your understanding of production.

4. Press Alt Early

Detailed view turns confusing machines into readable machines.

Alt mode shows machine recipes and extra structure information, which makes belts, furnaces, assemblers, and power layouts much easier to inspect. Turn it on before the base becomes dense.

5. Automate The Work You Keep Repeating

Handcrafting is a bridge, not a plan.

It is normal to handcraft the first belts, inserters, drills, and science packs. Once you catch yourself making the same item again and again, build a small assembler line or output chest for it. Belts, inserters, ammo, assemblers, power poles, pipes, and early science are all good automation targets.

6. Give The Factory Room

A cramped factory is harder to fix than an ugly factory.

Leave gaps between smelting, science, power, oil, defenses, and the main bus corridor. Factorio rewards expansion and rebuilding; tight early layouts can work, but they make later belts, rails, pipes, and power poles harder to thread through.

7. Build Stable Steam Before Scaling Science

A science build is only as reliable as the power under it.

Early electricity comes from water, boilers, steam engines, fuel, and power poles. A common beginner steam ratio is one boiler for two steam engines, with one offshore pump able to support a 20-boiler, 40-engine line. You do not need the full line immediately, but leave enough room to expand cleanly.

8. Use A Simple Main Bus, Not A Perfect One

A bus is a learning structure, not a sacred layout.

A main bus puts common materials in a central corridor and lets production branches split off from it. Start with practical flows such as iron plates, copper plates, steel, and circuits once you can make them. The bus should keep the base readable; if chasing symmetry delays research for an hour, it has stopped helping.

9. Feed Labs Automatically

Research is the signal that the factory is becoming a factory.

Labs should not depend on you jogging over with science packs forever. Automate the first science pack, feed it to labs, then expand into the next pack when research starts asking for it. If packs back up, add labs; if labs sit empty, fix production.

10. Treat Pollution As Part Of Defense

The pollution cloud is the warning system for attacks.

Enemies become a practical problem when pollution reaches nests. Watch the map overlay, defend the side of the base facing pollution pressure, and avoid clearing nests far beyond what you can defend. Destroying nests, producing pollution, and time all contribute to enemy evolution.

11. Learn Train Signals Before Building A Rail Web

One train is transport; many trains are a signaling problem.

Rail signals split track into blocks so trains do not enter occupied sections. For beginners, two one-way parallel rails are easier to scale than one bidirectional line. Add radars near intersections, automate fuel, and decide train length before the network spreads.

12. Keep Mods And Space Age Separate From Vanilla Habits

A modded or DLC factory can change what the correct answer is.

Learn an unmodded base first. Space Age adds planets, space platforms, quality, elevated rails, recycling, and new resource problems after the rocket phase. Mods can change recipes, logistics, enemies, power, blueprints, and progression, so do not assume a blueprint or ratio from one setup applies to another.

Automation And Logistics

  1. Burner stage: Use burner drills and stone furnaces to make the first iron and copper plates, then expand enough coal and stone collection that you are not constantly hand-feeding machines.
  2. Belt stage: Move ore, plates, coal, and crafted parts on transport belts so machines can run while you build somewhere else.
  3. Inserter stage: Use inserters to move items between belts, machines, furnaces, labs, and chests. Inserter direction matters, so check arrows and Alt mode.
  4. Assembler stage: Make assemblers produce repeat-use items and science packs. Output to belts for continuous production or limited chests for personal supplies.
  5. Bus stage: Reserve a straight corridor for common materials, then branch production off the side instead of tangling every new build through the old one.
  6. Robot stage: Logistics and construction robots are powerful later, but they need roboports, power, chests, and research. Use them to reduce repetitive transport and construction once the base can support them.
  7. Train stage: Use trains when resource patches, oil, or outposts are far enough away that belts and pipes become awkward. Signals and fuel automation are part of the build, not optional polish.

Power And Defense

  1. Separate power fuel from casual coal use: If boilers starve, the factory can brown out, miners slow down, and even less coal arrives.
  2. Expand power before the warning icons pile up: Build extra boilers, engines, fuel input, and poles before every new science or smelting expansion.
  3. Watch pollution reach nests: Defend pollution-facing edges first instead of walling random empty land.
  4. Use early turrets where attacks actually arrive: Place gun turrets and ammunition near likely approach paths, then improve the perimeter once the attack pattern is clear.
  5. Do not over-clear nests too early: Clearing room is sometimes necessary, but destroying nests also contributes to evolution. Expand only into space you can defend.
  6. Plan oil with defense in mind: Oil is later than the first plates and science, but pumpjacks produce pollution and outposts can attract attacks.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not handcraft every repeated item - Automate belts, inserters, ammo, power poles, assemblers, and science once you need them repeatedly.

  2. Do not build every machine shoulder-to-shoulder - Leave space for extra belts, pipes, poles, assemblers, and future rebuilds.

  3. Do not starve boilers with a shared coal line - Give power a reliable fuel supply before expanding science and smelting.

  4. Do not ignore empty labs - Empty labs mean production is failing upstream.

  5. Do not add more labs when science packs are missing - Fix the pack bottleneck before increasing research consumption.

  6. Do not put every item on the bus by reflex - Some parts are better made near the machines that consume them.

  7. Do not clear nests far beyond your perimeter - Expand enough to protect the factory, then keep the space defended.

  8. Do not add several trains before learning signals - Multiple trains on unsignaled or poorly signaled rail can block or crash.

  9. Do not paste unfamiliar blueprints blindly - Check power, inputs, outputs, version, DLC, mods, and whether you understand how to repair the design.

  10. Do not mix Space Age and vanilla assumptions - Planet mechanics, quality, elevated rails, recycling, and platform logistics can change the right design.
