Fate/Grand Order Beginner Tips - Servants, Story, AP, and Summons

Fate/Grand Order beginner tips for English-version story progress, class affinity, supports, Command Cards, Servant leveling, AP, Craft Essences, and summons.

On this page

Fate/Grand Order, developed by Lasengle and sold/published by Aniplex Inc., is a free-to-play mobile FateRPG about becoming a Master, forming parties with Servants, clearing story quests and events, and fighting turn-based command-card battles.

Content warning: Apple and Google Play list fantasy/cartoon violence, blood, suggestive themes, partial nudity or sexual content/nudity, tobacco/alcohol/drug references, profanity/crude humor, horror/fear themes, weapons, loot boxes, and random-item purchases. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on play.

This guide is for new English-version players. It avoids tier lists, banner recommendations, exact summon rates, future JP-to-English predictions, and current event farming routes because FGO changes through maintenance, campaigns, summon lineups, and region-specific schedules.

Patch note: This guide reflects the English 9th Anniversary era. Always read the current in-game news and Summon Info before spending Saint Quartz or planning around a limited event.

Essential Tips

1. Treat English and JP Advice as Different

Use English-version news for English accounts.

FGO has separate official English and Japanese sites, and the English news feed shows its own campaign dates, summon periods, and roadmap. JP information can help with long-term expectations, but do not treat it as current English availability.

2. Clear Singularity F Early

Many campaigns, trials, and events start by checking story progress.

Current official English anniversary pages repeatedly use Singularity F as an eligibility gate, while later 2026 roadmap events require Ordeal Call or Lostbelt chapters. Story progress is not just narrative progress; it unlocks more of the live-service calendar.

3. Build Around Class Advantage Before Rarity

A lower-rarity Servant with advantage can outperform a flashy mismatch.

Advantaged classes deal more damage and take less. Disadvantaged classes do the opposite. When a quest previews enemy class tendencies, choose your party and support around that information before defaulting to your newest rare Servant.

4. Use Friend Supports Deliberately

A good support pick can carry early accounts through hard nodes.

On the Select Support screen, switch by class and match the enemy tendency. Set your own Support Setup too: each useful support you lend can earn Friend Points, and a filled support list helps friends find what they need.

5. Level Servants Before Chasing Complicated Upgrades

Raw levels raise ATK and HP, and early story asks for survival first.

Feed Embers to the Servants you actually field, then Ascend them when they hit a level cap. Skill levels, NP levels, Append systems, and servant-specific tricks matter later, but a low-level roster will struggle before those optimizations pay off.

6. Do Not Ignore Ascension Materials

Ascension is how your main Servants keep growing.

Ascension raises level caps up to Stage Four and can change Saint Graphs or battle sprites. Check required Pieces, Monuments, and materials before spending AP randomly, then farm toward a specific next Ascension.

7. Learn What Each Card Color Is For

Quick, Arts, and Buster are not interchangeable buttons.

Quick helps with Critical Stars, Arts helps fill NP Gauge, and Buster is for damage. When all three cards share a color, you get that color’s chain bonus. When all three cards belong to one Servant, that Servant gains an Extra Attack.

8. Plan Around Noble Phantasms

A Noble Phantasm is often the turn you are building toward.

Servants can use their NP at 100% gauge. Arts cards and Arts Chains are the cleanest beginner way to charge NPs, while Quick cards and taking damage can also add some gauge. Save buffs, Master Skills, and card choices for the turn that matters.

9. Watch the Three-Turn Card Flow

Your frontline cards are less random than they first look.

With three frontline Servants, their 15 normal Command Cards are dealt over three turns before the deck resets. If you saw most of one Servant’s cards already, expect fewer of that Servant’s cards before the reset unless a shuffle or defeat changes the pool.

10. Respect AP, Master Level, and Party Cost

Progression systems decide how long you can play and what you can equip.

Master level increases max AP, fully restores AP on level-up, raises Party Cost, and expands friend capacity. Expensive Servants and Craft Essences can exceed early Party Cost, so build a legal team before assuming your best pieces can all fit together.

11. Use Craft Essences for Roles

A CE is part of a Servant’s job, not just extra stats.

Craft Essences can add HP, ATK, starting NP, damage, utility, or special effects. Match the CE to the Servant’s role: NP access for wave clearers, durability for fragile units, and damage or support effects for key turns.

12. Spend Saint Quartz Only After Reading Summon Info

Banner details matter more than hype.

Official summon pages tell players to open in-game Summon Info for the full Servant and Craft Essence list. Current English anniversary rules also make Guaranteed Summon counts separate by pickup/page/lineup, and daily lineup changes can reset a count. Read the actual banner before spending Quartz, tickets, or paid Quartz.

Team and Upgrade Habits

  1. Keep a class spread: Raise useful options across the basic classes so class advantage is available when story nodes change.
  2. Invest in a small core first: A few leveled and Ascended Servants clear more content than many half-built ones.
  3. Equip CEs with intent: Starting NP, survival, critical support, and damage all solve different problems.
  4. Check Party Cost before upgrading a team idea: High-rarity Servants and CEs can force awkward cuts on new accounts.
  5. Use duplicate Servants carefully: Duplicates can raise NP level, but confirm the Servant and lock anything valuable before using copies as enhancement material.
  6. Keep Friend Point habits active: Support usage and Friend Point Summons are part of normal account growth, especially early.

Battle Habits

  1. Read enemy class tendency before selecting support: The best support is usually the one with class advantage or the right utility.
  2. Use skills before cards when they shape the turn: Damage buffs, NP charge, defense, and evasion should be planned during the tactical phase.
  3. Choose Arts when NP timing matters: Arts chains can move multiple Servants toward their Noble Phantasms.
  4. Save Buster cards for damage turns: Buster chains and damage buffs are strongest when the target needs to die now.
  5. Use Quick with the next turn in mind: Critical Stars help future card draws, so Quick choices are often setup.
  6. Track which Servant’s cards have appeared: The three-turn card pool helps you estimate whether a Brave Chain is likely soon.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not build only by rarity - Class advantage, levels, CE fit, and support access matter more than a gold border alone.

  2. Do not enter hard quests without checking enemy class tendency - A bad class matchup can turn an easy fight into a revive sink.

  3. Do not leave your Support Setup empty - Other Masters cannot borrow what you never placed, and you miss Friend Point opportunities.

  4. Do not spread Embers across every new Servant - Concentrated levels and Ascensions clear more content than a wide roster of underleveled units.

  5. Do not equip CEs only by rarity - A lower-rarity CE that supports the Servant’s role can be more useful than a high-rarity mismatch.

  6. Do not spend Saint Quartz without opening Summon Info - Availability, pickup lineups, guarantees, and counts can differ by banner.

  7. Do not assume JP timing applies to English accounts - Regions have separate official schedules and news.

  8. Do not ignore story requirements between events - Roadmap and campaign pages can lock participation behind story chapters.

  9. Do not forget that maintenance can interrupt play and summoning - Finish time-sensitive AP, event, and summon plans before scheduled downtime.
