Fears to Fathom: Home Alone Tips

Beginner-friendly Fears to Fathom: Home Alone tips for texts, food, hiding, doors, the microphone achievement, and surviving Episode 1.

On this page

Fears to Fathom: Home Alone is the first episode of Rayll’s episodic psychological horror series. This guide covers Episode 1 only: the free Home Alone Steam episode where Miles spends the night alone, follows texts, and has to survive a home-invasion threat. It does not cover Norwood Hitchhike, Carson House, Ironbark Lookout, Woodbury Getaway, or the wider anthology.

Home Alone is short, but it punishes careless rushing because there is no normal checkpoint safety net to lean on. The safest way to play is to treat every phone message, door, sound cue, and hiding prompt as part of the route. You are reading the situation, finishing ordinary tasks, and making the right choice when the house stops feeling ordinary.

Essential Tips

1. Read Every Text Before Moving On

Your phone is more than flavor text. Messages tell you what Miles is supposed to do next, set up the threat, and support the Curious achievement. When a new text arrives, stop somewhere safe, open the phone, and scroll through the chats instead of assuming you can catch up later.

This matters most early. The opening stretch is slow on purpose: wake up, check conversations, understand why you are alone, and let the game establish normal house behavior before the danger escalates. Missing messages will not make you better at the scary parts; it only removes context and can cost achievement progress.

2. Finish the Normal Chores Cleanly

Do the ordinary tasks in a calm order. Go downstairs, take the lasagna from the fridge, put it in the oven, wait for it to heat, turn on the TV, sit on the couch, and eat by interacting with the food. Afterward, go back upstairs and do the homework interaction at the desk.

These chores are the game’s pacing system. Treat them like route gates, not optional distractions. If the next beat is not triggering, you probably skipped a simple action such as eating enough, using the book, or closing the right door before sleeping.

3. Treat the House Like a Horror Route, Not a Sandbox

Home Alone gives you a house to move through, but it is not asking you to improvise wildly. Walk with purpose, check the obvious route, and avoid experimenting during tense sequences. The episode is strongest when you respect its scripted escalation.

Small observations are still useful. Looking out windows, noticing the stairs while eating, and paying attention to hallway doors can prepare you for later cues. Just keep curiosity separate from panic moments. Once the threat is active, your job is survival, not sightseeing.

4. Use the Microphone Moment Deliberately

The Loud achievement is tied to alerting NPCs through voice activity. If you want it, prepare for that moment before you are too tense to think. When the man is outside and the game allows the setup, make a clear noise into the microphone, then move on.

Do not turn the microphone achievement into reckless play. The point is to trigger the alert, not to open the front door or stand around testing danger. If your setup does not have a working mic, mark the achievement for a later run rather than ruining the survival route.

5. Close the Bedroom Door Before Hiding

When the game sends you back to Miles’ room, close the bedroom door before getting under the bed. This is one of the most important habits in the episode because hiding alone is not always enough to advance the sequence safely.

Think of the door as part of the hiding action. Enter the room, shut the door, then hide under the bed and wait for the next clear cue. If nothing seems to happen, recheck whether you actually closed the door instead of immediately leaving cover.

6. Do Not Open the Front Door During the Threat

When the man is outside, the safest answer is not to greet the situation directly. You can observe enough to understand the danger, but opening the door during the threat is not the correct survival choice.

Home Alone works because the ordinary house rules become dangerous. A doorbell, a window, or a front entry can feel like a normal interaction, but once the warning texts arrive, treat outside access as unsafe unless the ending sequence clearly changes the situation.

7. Retreat Immediately From the Parents’ Room Cue

Late in the episode, you will be tempted to move toward the stairs when the house seems ready to resolve. Go slowly and watch the parents’ room. When that door opens and the intruder cue appears, turn around immediately.

Do not wait for a closer look. Run back to Miles’ bedroom, close the door again, and hide under the bed. This is the moment where curiosity is most likely to cost the whole run, because dying late can mean starting over from the beginning.

8. Listen for the Ending Before Leaving Cover

After the final retreat, stay hidden until the police siren cue makes it clear that the danger has passed. The ending is not about beating the intruder; it is about staying alive long enough for help to arrive.

Once the sirens sound, leave the bedroom, go downstairs, and exit toward Paula. That should complete the episode and award Survivor if the run has reached the proper ending state.

9. Plan for One Clean Achievement Run

Home Alone has only three Steam achievements, so it is realistic to aim for all of them in one careful run: read the chats for Curious, use the microphone alert for Loud, and survive Episode 1 for Survivor.

The risk is that a late mistake wastes the run. If you are mainly trying to finish for the first time, prioritize survival over perfection. You can always replay the short episode for Loud if microphone setup or nerves get in the way.

10. Keep Episode Boundaries Straight

Home Alone is not a general Fears to Fathom guide. Later episodes have different protagonists, locations, threat structures, and mechanics. Advice about this house, this intruder route, and these three achievements should not be carried into another episode as if the anthology plays the same way every time.

That boundary also helps with spoilers. Learn this compact route, finish Episode 1, then approach the next episode on its own terms.

Home Alone Route Habits

Use a steady rhythm: phone, chore, room, door, hiding cue. When a message arrives, read it. When the game gives a household task, finish it fully. When you return upstairs, pay attention to the bedroom door. When hiding begins, stay hidden until a clear sound, text, or route cue tells you to move.

The house is small enough that you do not need a complex map. Kitchen tasks happen downstairs, homework and hiding happen upstairs, and the late danger centers on windows, the front door, the parents’ room, and Miles’ bedroom. If you feel lost, return to the last message and ask what it told you to do next.

Keep your pace slower during transitions. Eating, going upstairs, checking water, and approaching the stairwell all have timing or observation value. Sprinting through the house can make you miss visual cues that are meant to unsettle you and warn you.

Achievement Notes

Curious is the easiest achievement to secure: read the phone chats instead of ignoring them. Do it early and repeat the habit whenever messages update.

Loud is the one achievement that can depend on your hardware. Make sure the game can receive microphone input before trying to force the moment. When the outside threat is visible and you are ready, make a clear sound, confirm the reaction, then go back to safe routing.

Survivor is the completion achievement. It depends on finishing Episode 1, not on fighting or confronting the intruder. Close the bedroom door, hide under the bed at the right times, retreat from the parents’ room cue, and wait for the police siren before leaving.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not skip phone chats - The texts guide progression and support Curious.
  2. Do not leave the lasagna route half-finished - Heat it, watch TV, sit down, and eat until the game lets you move on.
  3. Do not treat homework as optional - The desk interaction is part of the evening route.
  4. Do not forget to close the bedroom door - Hiding works best when the door is shut first.
  5. Do not open the front door when the man is outside - Observation is safer than direct contact.
  6. Do not chase the Loud achievement without a working mic - Save it for a setup that can trigger voice activity.
  7. Do not walk closer to the parents’ room cue - Turn back as soon as the threat appears.
  8. Do not leave hiding before the siren cue - Wait until the ending state is clearly safe.
  9. Do not assume another episode follows the same rules - Home Alone advice is Episode 1-specific.
