Figment is the original musical action-adventure from Bedtime Digital Games, not Figment 2: Creed Valley and not the later Figment 1 + Figment 2 bundle. This guide covers Dusty and Piper’s first adventure through the mind, including puzzle habits, basic combat, health pickups, memory cleanup, and boss thinking.
Content note: Figment uses fantasy combat, nightmare imagery, mild blood, language, and crude humor. This guide keeps that material non-graphic and focused on play.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Every Object as Part of a Small Machine
Figment’s puzzles are usually built from simple pieces: batteries, sockets, switches, bridges, elevators, handles, windmills, plants, paths, and moving platforms. The trick is noticing which piece powers which route.
When you enter a new island or street, scan before sprinting ahead. Look for a missing socket, inactive bridge, movable disc, or switch that changes the layout.
2. Carry Puzzle Items With Intent
Batteries and discs are not just keys. They are portable state changes. Taking a battery from a windmill may shut one thing off while letting you power another machine. Moving a disc can repair an elevator, but you may still need that disc after riding it.
Before leaving an item behind, ask what it powered here and what inactive object you passed earlier.
3. Let Piper’s Callouts Shape Your Route
Piper is not just flavor dialogue. When Piper points out a memory, danger, or destination, slow down and mark the area mentally. A side interaction may become easy to miss once your attention shifts to the next chase or boss setup.
4. Use the Environment Against Nightmares
Several fights are closer to puzzle arenas than pure action tests. When a Nightmare throws bombs, spreads gas, blocks paths, or hides behind hazards, the answer is often to turn that behavior into a tool. Stand where a projectile can clear plants or use nearby machinery before forcing damage.
5. Collect Health Pickups Deliberately
Defeated enemies and some environmental objects release helpful pickups. Grab them before moving on. If your health is low, check nearby trees or recovery objects before entering the next enemy cluster.
6. Knock on Doors Before You Leave a Hub
Outer Cerebrum and Cerebrum City include many doors you can interact with. Doors are easy to skip because they look like background dressing, but they can matter for completion. If you are in a city-like area, sweep the lower and upper paths before chasing the main objective.
7. Read Memory Stones as Cleanup Signals
Memory stones tell you a memory is nearby. If you see one but cannot reach the memory yet, note the obstacle and area name. Some memories need later tools or a changed puzzle state.
8. Avoid Importing Figment 2 Rules
Figment 2 adds different locations, story terms, and mechanics. Do not look for Creed Valley systems, Open-minded and Closed-minded state switching, Moral Compass logic, or co-op Piper controls in the original Figment. If a tip mentions those, it belongs to the sequel.
Original Game Scope
This guide is for the original Figment campaign first released in 2017 and later sold or listed under closely related names on some platforms. On Xbox and Microsoft storefronts, the same adventure can appear as Figment: Journey Into the Mind.
The sequel is separate. Figment 2: Creed Valley has its own Creed Valley story and different puzzle language. Bundle pages can package both games together, which is convenient for buying but confusing when searching for help. Check that area names and mechanics match Dusty’s original route through places like Outer Cerebrum, Cerebrum City, Freedom Isles, Clockwork Town, and the Pathways.
Puzzle Objects to Read Carefully
| Object | How to Think About It |
|---|---|
| Batteries | Portable power that can activate one device while disabling another |
| Sockets | Destination clues for what a room needs next |
| Switches | Layout changers; watch bridges and paths after each kick |
| Discs | Repair pieces that may need to travel with you after use |
| Elevators | Often pair with missing parts or return routes |
| Handles | Usually tied to wind, gas, machinery, or blocked paths |
| Windmills | Power or clear hazards when connected correctly |
| Flowers/plants | Often block routes until a nearby hazard or projectile removes them |
| Moving bridges | Timing routes and sometimes clues about where a switch points |
| Catapults | One-way movement tools; finish local pickups before launching away |
When stuck, rebuild the chain from power item to destination. For example: battery powers socket, socket activates bridge, bridge reaches switch, switch changes path, path reaches missing part. Figment is more readable when you describe that chain than when you run every direction hoping for a prompt.
Combat and Health Habits
Dusty’s sword is simple, but timing matters. Use quick attacks for ordinary openings and save charged attacks for grouped enemies or enemies that stay vulnerable long enough to punish. When enemies mark the ground before striking, move first.
Against Tentacle-style enemies, wait until the attack animation gives you a clear moment to hit. A clean rhythm is safer than mashing.
Endorphin and health pickups are part of the combat loop. After a fight, collect what dropped before pursuing the next objective. If a tree or recovery object can restore a health segment, use it before entering a boss arena or enemy cluster.
Charged attacks are most valuable when enemies line up. If several small enemies gather, create space, let them group, then release the heavy hit. Do not force it in a crowded arena.
Memories, Doors, and Cleanup
Figment’s completion layer is easy to underestimate because the main route keeps moving. Memories, also called Remembranes in some guides, are the big cleanup concern. Collected memories can be revisited in Cerebrum City.
Use three habits for memories:
- Treat memory stones as a note to search nearby.
- Remember blocked memories instead of trying to solve every one immediately.
- Return after major area changes, boss victories, or new traversal access.
Doors are the other quiet completion check. When a town or city area gives you a row of buildings, interact with doors before leaving. If you are achievement hunting, do not assume only highlighted doors matter.
On a first playthrough, sweep each hub before committing to the next major gate. Check side paths, knock on doors, collect visible memories, and then move on.
Boss Mindset
Nightmare fights are tests of observation. A boss might throw a harmful object, create a hazard, dodge, or block the path. Identify what the arena wants you to redirect.
For a fight like Plague, notice which hazards only hurt you and which ones can change the environment. If a bomb clears flowers or opens a path, the boss is giving you a puzzle tool.
Do not chase a boss through danger just because a damage window exists. Clear the arena’s current problem first: gas, blocked bridge, powered machinery, missing battery, or unsafe plants.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not follow the Nightmare without checking side paths - You can miss doors, memories, and useful recovery pickups by treating every chase as urgent.
-
Do not leave a battery behind without checking inactive sockets - A removed battery may be the missing power for the next bridge or machine.
-
Do not kick switches without watching what moved - The important clue is often the bridge, path, or platform that changed after the kick.
-
Do not stand inside enemy warning circles - Move first, then attack when the enemy exposes itself.
-
Do not spend health to force charged attacks - Heavy hits are useful, but a safe normal attack is better than taking avoidable damage.
-
Do not ignore memory stones - They mark nearby memories, even when the route is not obvious on your first visit.
-
Do not skip ordinary-looking doors - Door interactions can matter for completion and achievements.
-
Do not use Figment 2 advice for Figment 1 puzzles - Sequel mechanics and locations do not apply to the original campaign.
