Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade is Square Enix’s enhanced and expanded version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, built around real-time movement, command-based ATB decisions, materia, weapon proficiency, stagger, and the separate Yuffie-focused FF7R Episode INTERmission.
Content warning: Official rating/store pages list Teen descriptors for blood, language, suggestive themes, use of alcohol and tobacco, and violence. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on gameplay.
This spoiler-light guide is for current Intergrade players on PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X|S / Xbox on PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is not a PS4 base Remake guide, not a Rebirth guide, not a boss route, not a hard-mode build guide, and not a full INTERmission walkthrough.
Essential Tips
1. Confirm You Are Playing Intergrade
Intergrade includes more than the original PS4 Remake.
The standalone Intergrade package includes the Remake main game and FF7R Episode INTERmission. If you came from the PS4 version through the PS5 enhancement update, do not assume the Yuffie episode is automatically included.
2. Learn ATB as Your Main Resource
Normal attacks create openings, but ATB spends win fights.
Basic attacks, blocking, time, and some materia effects help build ATB. Many abilities, spells, items, summons, and commands spend it. Treat attacks as the way you create command opportunities, not as the whole battle plan.
3. Use Tactical Mode Instead of Panicking
The command menu slows the moment down.
When a fight gets noisy, open the command menu, read HP, ATB, enemy state, and party needs, then choose the next command. Shortcuts are useful later, but Tactical Mode is the safest way to learn why a command matters.
4. Assess New Enemies Early
Enemy Intel turns guessing into planning.
Assess reveals enemy stats, weaknesses, and descriptions, then stores that information for later. Use it on unfamiliar enemies and important encounters before spending MP or ATB randomly.
5. Build Toward Pressure and Stagger
Staggered enemies take much more damage.
Many fights are about learning what pressures the target, filling the stagger gauge, then spending your strongest ATB abilities and limit opportunities during the damage window. If you only trade basic attacks, durable enemies take longer than they should.
6. Keep Materia Slots Purposeful
Materia is your spell list, utility kit, and passive setup.
Magic, Command, Support, Complete, and Summoning materia all do different jobs. Before every long stretch, check that each active party member has healing, useful offense, and any utility you actually plan to use.
7. Put Support Materia in Linked Slots
Blue materia needs the right pairing.
Support materia works by pairing with compatible materia in linked weapon or armor slots. A strong support materia in the wrong slot is just taking space.
8. Try New Weapons Long Enough to Learn Abilities
Weapon abilities can become permanent.
Each weapon has its own ability. Use that ability in battle until proficiency is maxed, then the character can use it without keeping that weapon equipped. This makes new weapons worth testing even when their raw stats do not look perfect.
9. Upgrade Weapons Around How You Actually Fight
SP is there to shape the weapon, not to decorate a menu.
Weapon upgrades can improve stats, materia slots, and passives. Spend SP on the role you are actually using: physical pressure, magic, survivability, or materia flexibility. Save exact min-max paths for a dedicated build guide.
10. Treat Streamlined Progression as an Option, Not the Default
It can radically change combat pacing.
Current Intergrade versions have Streamlined Progression options such as full HP/MP, stronger damage output, item support, and faster ability progress. Use them if you want a story-first or replay-friendly run, but know that they can make normal combat lessons less meaningful.
11. Keep Rebirth Advice Separate
Rebirth is a different game with expanded systems.
Some FF7 advice online is for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, not Remake Intergrade. If a tip talks about Rebirth-only progression, open-world regions, or later-party systems, do not import it into this game without checking.
12. Start INTERmission After You Know the Basics
Yuffie plays differently from Cloud’s party.
Episode INTERmission is separate from the main campaign, starts with its own equipment and materia setup, and centers on Yuffie’s ranged elemental style with Sonon as support. Learn ATB, Assess, materia, and stagger first, then treat INTERmission as a compact side campaign with its own rhythm.
Version and Platform Notes
| Version | Practical Note |
|---|---|
| PS5 Intergrade | Standalone PS5 purchase includes Remake and Episode INTERmission, with graphics/performance mode, Photo Mode, and DualSense features |
| PS4 Remake upgrade | The free PS5 enhancement update does not include Episode INTERmission; the Yuffie episode is separate for upgrade owners |
| Steam / Epic PC | Expect the full Remake game plus Episode INTERmission and bonus items; check your current version, graphics settings, and achievement behavior |
| Xbox Series X|S / Xbox on PC | Current release supports Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud support; check save and achievement behavior on your setup |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Current release is available on Switch 2; check performance, storage, demo transfer, and physical or digital packaging details on your copy |
| Twin Pack bundles | Some stores bundle Remake Intergrade with Rebirth, but Rebirth is still a separate game |
The safest rule is to learn systems by name first, then map those commands to your platform buttons.
Combat Fundamentals
| System | First-Run Habit |
|---|---|
| ATB | Build it with attacks and defense, then spend it deliberately |
| Tactical Mode | Pause the pressure long enough to choose the right command |
| Assess | Scan new enemies and important fights before wasting MP |
| Pressure | Look for the condition that makes the stagger gauge rise faster |
| Stagger | Save burst damage, strong abilities, and limits for the stagger window |
| Guarding | Block when dodging is not realistic; survival keeps ATB coming |
| Party commands | Spend allies’ ATB too instead of only controlling the current character |
The combat is not a pure action game. Your real strength comes from moving between real-time pressure and command decisions.
Materia and Weapons
| System | What to Watch |
|---|---|
| Magic materia | Keep useful elements and healing available, then adjust when enemy intel supports it |
| Command materia | Equip commands you will actually spend ATB on |
| Support materia | Pair it in linked slots with compatible materia |
| Complete materia | Treat passive effects as build support, not a substitute for good commands |
| Summon materia | Remember it uses a separate summon slot and is limited per character |
| Weapon abilities | Learn each new weapon’s ability before writing it off |
| Weapon upgrades | Spend SP toward your current role, then revisit after more materia slots open |
Avoid copying exact materia builds from memory. Intergrade includes main-game systems, bonus items, Episode INTERmission equipment, and platform/update changes, so use dedicated build routes only when they match your version.
INTERmission Notes
Episode INTERmission is best approached as its own short campaign, not as a chapter inserted into the main Remake route.
Yuffie is the directly controlled character, while Sonon supports her through customizable equipment and Synergized behavior. Her elemental tools make Assess especially valuable, because knowing weaknesses helps you choose how to pressure enemies instead of guessing.
Fort Condor and Shinra Box Buster are optional INTERmission minigames with materia rewards. This beginner guide does not route exact board setups, scoring paths, collectible locations, or boss tactics.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not spend every ATB bar the moment it appears - Save commands for healing, stagger setup, or a real damage window.
-
Do not leave new enemies unassessed - Missing weaknesses makes pressure and stagger harder to understand.
-
Do not attack staggered enemies with only basic strings - Use the damage window for strong ATB abilities and limits when available.
-
Do not equip Support materia in ordinary unlinked slots - It needs a compatible linked pair to do its job.
-
Do not ignore weapon proficiency - New weapons can teach permanent abilities after enough use.
-
Do not forget allies’ ATB bars - Party members can spend commands even when you are controlling someone else.
-
Do not rely on bonus items without reading their limits - Some included gear only applies to Episode INTERmission.
-
Do not turn on every Streamlined Progression option by accident - Those settings can change HP, MP, damage, items, and ability pacing.
-
Do not treat INTERmission like Cloud’s normal party combat - Yuffie and Sonon have a separate setup and flow.
-
Do not start hard-mode planning from a first-run save menu - Exact manuscripts, materia routes, and boss plans belong in a dedicated route guide.
