Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition Beginner Tips

Beginner tips for Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition, covering combat, camping, AP, Armiger Unleashed, Royal Pack features, and Insomnia.

On this page

Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition is still the road trip first: Noctis, Ignis, Gladiolus, and Prompto crossing Eos, fighting in real time, resting to bank experience, and upgrading through AP. The Royal Edition adds important console extras on top of that campaign: the Royal Pack content, season-pass episodes, Multiplayer Expansion: Comrades, bonus items, first-person view, Royal Vessel travel, Regalia Type-D work, Armiger Unleashed, and the expanded Insomnia endgame.

Use this as a beginner route for the Royal Edition package on console. It is not a Windows Edition setup guide, and it does not treat Episode Ardyn as part of this package.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Resting as a Progression Choice

Noctis and friends do not apply stored experience until they rest. Camps let Ignis cook meals for status boosts, while hotels and lodgings can multiply banked experience. Early on, camp when you need meal buffs for fights or nighttime safety, and save bigger experience cash-ins for lodgings when you want levels more than food effects.

2. Build Around AP, Not Just Levels

AP feeds the Ascension grid, and those upgrades shape combat, exploration, recovery, Techniques, and passive benefits. Pick early nodes that match how you actually play: stronger warp-strikes if you fight aggressively, camping or travel bonuses if you roam a lot, and ally Technique upgrades if you lean on the party during hard battles.

3. Use Wait Mode While Learning Fights

Royal Edition combat is real time, but Wait Mode can freeze action while Noctis stands still. That gives new players time to read targets, pick priorities, and stop mashing through crowded battles. Once you understand enemy openings, Active Mode becomes easier to handle.

4. Warp Often, But Watch Your MP

Warp-strikes help Noctis close distance, reposition, and punish openings. Point-warping to safe spots is just as important because it helps recover and reset pressure. If you spend all your MP attacking, you may enter Stasis at the exact moment you need to escape.

5. Respect Friendly Fire From Elemancy

Elemental spells are powerful area attacks, and crafting with extra items can add useful effects. They can also hurt your own party. Throw magic when enemies are grouped away from allies, and avoid panic-casting in tight brawls unless the trade is worth it.

6. Let Restaurants Do More Than Feed You

Restaurants are useful even when you are not hungry. Their paid food buffs last a long time, and local tipsters can reveal map icons and hunts. Whenever you reach a new outpost, check the restaurant before driving away.

7. Prepare Armiger Unleashed as a Long Goal

Royal Edition adds Armiger Unleashed, but it is not an early shortcut. You need all thirteen royal arms and the Founder King’s Sigil before Noctis can use it. Keep collecting royal arms as you progress, then practice the mode before relying on it in dangerous endgame fights.

8. Buff Before Using Armiger Unleashed

Armiger Unleashed is stronger when Noctis enters with good preparation. Food and item buffs help, Ignis’s Enhancement can carry into Noctis’s attacks, and Prompto’s Piercer can lower a target’s Defense before activation. Treat it like a burst window, not a random button press.

9. Do Side Activities Along Your Route

Fishing, chocobo racing, hunts, sidequests, and exploration all support the main trip. You do not need to clear every marker immediately, but picking up convenient activities builds gil, items, AP opportunities, meals, and map familiarity without turning the campaign into a checklist.

10. Enter Expanded Insomnia Carefully

Royal Edition expands the final Insomnia route with sidequests, extra enemies, bosses, and optional dangers. Omega can appear before you are ready, and Cerberus blocks the Citadel route. Save, stock recovery items, finish useful side work, and do not assume every endgame enemy is meant to be fought on sight.

Route Priorities

SituationBest MoveWhy It Helps
Early road tripMix story, hunts, and nearby sidequestsKeeps gil, items, and AP moving
Low on survivabilityCamp for meal buffsFood can stabilize hard fights
Large stored experienceConsider lodgingMultipliers make banked EXP more valuable
New town reachedVisit the restaurantTipsters reveal hunts and map information
Royal arm nearbyCollect it before moving onRoyal arms feed Armiger progress
Night is fallingRest or travel cautiouslyDaemons make night routes more dangerous
Endgame Insomnia opensScout, save, and avoid Omega earlyRoyal Edition adds major threats there

The best beginner rhythm is simple: push the main story until the world opens, then let nearby hunts and sidequests fund your upgrades. Rest with intent instead of resting automatically. If a dungeon, hunt, or imperial base feels punishing, do not brute-force it for an hour; adjust your meal, equipment, Techniques, and item stock first.

Once the Royal Vessel becomes relevant, treat it as extra exploration between Cape Caem and Altissia rather than a replacement for campaign progress. Fishing aboard it can add new fish and dishes, but it is still optional side value unless you are deliberately cleaning up Royal Pack activities.

Royal Edition Content Boundaries

Royal Edition includes the base game, the Royal Pack additions, season-pass content for Episode Gladiolus, Episode Prompto, Multiplayer Expansion: Comrades, Episode Ignis, and bonus items such as weapons, Regalia skins, and item sets. The Royal Pack additions include expanded Insomnia, Royal Vessel exploration, first-person view, Armiger Unleashed, Archive entries, Regalia Type-D work, and new trophies or achievements.

Keep those buckets separate while playing. The main campaign teaches Noctis’s core combat and travel loop. The character episodes use separate playable styles. Comrades is the multiplayer expansion. Royal Pack features mostly enrich exploration, late-game combat, and the final stretch. Episode Ardyn is a later add-on listed separately, so do not plan this Royal Edition route around it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not sleep every time you see a bed - Resting applies stored experience, so choose camps for meal buffs and lodgings when the multiplier matters.

  2. Do not ignore AP while chasing levels - Levels help, but Ascension upgrades change how combat, exploration, and party support work.

  3. Do not throw elemental magic into your own party - Elemancy can hit allies, so aim spells where the blast will not punish your team.

  4. Do not drive at night unprepared - Night routes bring more dangerous enemies, so rest, fast travel, or stock up before pushing through.

  5. Do not spend Armiger Unleashed without buffs - Food, items, Enhancement, and Piercer can make the burst window much stronger.

  6. Do not fight Omega just because it appears - Expanded Insomnia includes threats that can overwhelm an unprepared party.

  7. Do not board the Royal Vessel as a campaign shortcut - Use it for extra exploration, fishing, and dishes between Cape Caem and Altissia.

  8. Do not launch Comrades to advance Noctis’s campaign - It is a separate multiplayer mode, while Noctis’s route remains the single-player path.
