Football Manager 2024 Beginner Tips - Saves, Tactics, and Transfers

Football Manager 2024 beginner tips for FM24 career setup, tactics, set pieces, transfers, player targets, and match-day habits.

On this page

Football Manager 2024, developed by Sports Interactive and published by SEGA, is a football-management simulation about building a club, shaping tactics, managing recruitment, handling players, and reacting to matches across a long career.

This covers the base Football Manager 2024 desktop edition on Windows PC and macOS. It is not an FM24 Console, FM24 Touch, or FM24 Mobile guide, and it avoids controller, Apple Arcade, Switch, Netflix, and console-only assumptions.

This is a beginner guide, but FM24 itself is dense. Expect your first save to be a learning save: the goal is to make clear decisions, understand why they worked or failed, and avoid burying yourself under menus before the first season settles.

Essential Tips

1. Pick the Career Mode That Matches the Story You Want

FM24 gives you Original, Real World, and Your World starts. Original is the cleanest first save because it uses the database state at game start. Real World is better when you want players to move on their real transfer dates. Your World is useful when you want to interrupt real-life transfer history and rewrite the squad from the day you begin.

For a first serious save, pick the mode before you pick the club. A small change in start logic changes squad availability, budgets, and what your first transfer window is really about.

2. Start With a Club You Can Read

Your first save does not need to be a heroic lower-league rebuild. Choose a club where the squad, budget, league rules, and board expectations are easy to understand. A stable top-flight or strong second-tier club teaches the systems faster than a crisis job with unfamiliar restrictions.

3. Treat the Formation Screen as Only the Starting Point

FM24’s positional play means roles can change the shape in possession. A back four on the tactic screen might not behave like a flat back four when an Inverted Full-Back, Inverted Wing-Back, Libero, Half Back, or Segundo Volante starts rotating into another line.

After choosing a tactic, watch how it looks in highlights. Ask where your players stand when building attacks, where the passing triangles form, and whether your defensive cover survives those rotations.

4. Build Around Roles Before Instructions

Do not stack team instructions before you know what your players are being asked to do. Role and duty choices decide who holds width, who attacks space, who protects transitions, and who steps into midfield. Once the roles make sense, add instructions that reinforce the shape instead of fighting it.

5. Use Set Piece Coaches Early

FM24’s set-piece system is built around Set Piece Coaches, player attributes, and role categories such as aerial threats, box threats, recovery defenders, and creators. Use the creator instead of copying an old routine from memory. Answer the defensive and attacking preference questions, then review who the game ranks for each job.

6. Review Set Pieces After Squad Changes

Set-piece rankings update when you change selection, formation, or substitutions, but that does not mean the plan is perfect. Check priority lists after signing a tall centre-back, selling a dominant header, changing takers, or moving to a new formation. Corners and free kicks can quietly drift away from your best players if you never look.

7. Recruit for the Job, Not the Name

FM24’s transfer market is more competitive, and AI managers account for squad gaps, tactical style, form, reputation, and potential. Do not assume every desirable player will sit untouched. Build shortlists around roles and attributes your tactic actually needs, then move before a rival with a clearer squad need arrives.

8. Control Wages Before Transfer Fees

Fees are visible, but wages, bonuses, playing-time promises, and future commitments shape the save for longer. Before negotiating, decide the maximum wage, role, and contract length you can live with. If a player needs star treatment but your tactic only needs a rotation option, walk away.

9. Use Agents and Intermediaries Carefully

When selling, Ask Agent About Market Interest can help you understand a player’s market and mood. If you sound desperate, you may invite lower expectations. If the player is surprised or unwilling to leave, forcing the issue can create a morale problem. Intermediaries are useful for surplus players, but the fee cut means they are a tool, not a default button.

10. Set Player Targets With Context

Individual targets can push players toward training improvements, goals, assists, clean sheets, or match performance standards. Use them when the target is fair and connected to the player’s role. A young loanee, a striker in form, and an unhappy squad player all need different conversations.

11. Tune Staff Meetings Instead of Ignoring Them

Staff meetings can become noisy if every topic lands in your inbox. Adjust meeting preferences so you still see useful information about training, scouting, staff roles, and squad issues without accepting every recommendation by habit.

12. Keep Database and Patch Claims Out of Your Plan

FM24’s 24.4 final data update changes player/team data and applies gameplay fixes, but your save still depends on database choice and start date. Do not build a strategy around a player, rule, budget, or points deduction unless you have checked it in that exact save.

First Save Setup

Start with a readable setup: one main nation, a few nearby playable leagues, and a club whose expectations make sense. More leagues can make a world feel richer, but a huge setup also creates more noise while you are learning. Your first target is not perfect realism; it is a save you can process.

Before clicking through the first week, check five screens: squad depth, tactics, medical centre, dynamics, and finances. Squad depth tells you where the obvious holes are. Tactics shows whether the current players fit the style you want. Medical status stops you planning around unavailable players. Dynamics shows leadership and mood. Finances tell you whether your transfer idea is realistic.

For new players, Original mode is usually the simplest starting point. Real World and Your World are excellent once you know what kind of transfer chaos you want to create.

Tactics and Match Day

Create one main tactic and one safer variation. The main tactic should express how you want to play; the safer version should protect leads, tough away games, or injury-hit matches without teaching the squad a totally different sport.

Watch early matches with enough detail to see rotations. If an Inverted Full-Back moves inside, check who protects the outside lane. If a Segundo Volante attacks high, check whether someone covers midfield. If your creators all occupy the same space, change roles before adding more instructions.

Use set pieces as part of match preparation, not a separate chore. Decide whether you want safer defending, aggressive counters, near-post deliveries, far-post pressure, or central targets. Then let the set-piece system assign players and review the results. If your best header is not in the most valuable aerial job, adjust the priority list.

During matches, make substitutions for a reason: fatigue, role fit, tactical shape, cards, or a specific matchup. Do not chase every highlight with a new instruction. FM24 rewards reading patterns over reacting to one bad pass.

Transfers, Players, and Staff

Recruitment starts with the tactic. List the roles you lack, then search for players whose attributes support those roles. A famous attacker is less useful than a cheaper player who solves the exact weakness in your system.

When selling, separate unwanted players into types. A valuable player who wants to leave needs market timing. A fringe player on high wages may need an agent conversation or Intermediary. A young player who needs minutes may belong on the development list instead of the transfer list.

Player targets work best when they are believable. Ask a striker to hit a scoring goal if he plays regularly. Ask a defender for clean-sheet standards if the tactic protects him. Use training targets when you need a player to grow into a role, but avoid promises that turn a small issue into a relationship problem.

Your staff should reduce workload, not replace judgment. Let staff help with set pieces, reports, and meeting summaries, then make the final call on tactics, contracts, and squad direction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not choose Real World or Your World without understanding how it changes transfers - Use Original until you know which transfer timeline you want.

  2. Do not load more leagues than you can comfortably track - A smaller setup is easier to process while learning.

  3. Do not judge a tactic only from the static formation screen - Watch highlights to see the actual in-possession shape.

  4. Do not stack team instructions before roles and duties make sense - Fix player jobs before adding tactical complexity.

  5. Do not ignore set-piece priority lists after changing the squad - Recheck assignments after transfers, injuries, and substitutions.

  6. Do not sell an unhappy player without checking agent interest and morale risk - Understand the market before forcing a departure.

  7. Do not promise playing time that your tactic cannot support - Match contract expectations to the role you can provide.

  8. Do not sign players whose attributes do not fit the role you need - Recruit for the tactical job, not reputation.

  9. Do not accept every staff meeting recommendation automatically - Tune preferences and keep final decisions deliberate.

  10. Do not plan around database details you have not checked in the current save - Check rules, budgets, and player status in-game.
