Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island is the single-player story expansion included with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The Windows Director’s Cut port was developed by Nixxes. This guide is for Iki Island, not the base-game campaign route or the separate Legends co-op mode.
Content warning: Iki Island sits inside a Mature-rated samurai action game with bloody combat, intense violence, language, partial nudity descriptors, war trauma, and hallucination themes. The tips below stay non-graphic and focus on play.
Iki is available after reaching Act 2 and the Toyotama region, but that does not mean it plays like a harmless side errand. Treat the trip as a substantial expansion region with its own opening sequence, enemy pressure, traversal tools, story arc, and cleanup activities.
Essential Tips
1. Start Iki After You Are Comfortable in Act 2
Reach Toyotama, then decide whether Jin is ready.
The expansion can open once Act 2 begins, through the Tale called Journey Into The Past near Drowned Man’s Shore. If you are barely surviving normal Act 2 fights, spend time improving your armor, resolve, charms, and stance familiarity before chasing the new marker.
2. Expect a Temporary Commitment
Do not sail away with unfinished business you still want to handle immediately.
The game warns you before the trip because you cannot freely return to Tsushima for a while after leaving. You are not permanently trapped, but the first Iki stretch asks you to finish several story beats before the map opens back up.
3. Bring Flexible Armor, Not One Favorite Outfit
Iki rewards swapping gear for the activity in front of you.
Keep combat armor ready for Mongol groups, stealth tools ready for camps, Tadayori’s Armor ready for archery, and Sakai Clan or Ghost-focused setups ready when you want direct pressure. The island adds enough activity variety that one outfit will leave easy advantages unused.
4. Kill Support Threats Early
Shamans change fights if you let them work.
Iki introduces shaman-led enemy pressure early. When a group suddenly feels more aggressive or harder to control, look for the support enemy and remove that problem before spending resolve and ghost weapons on the front line.
5. Use Horse Charge as an Opener
Your horse becomes a real combat tool on Iki.
Horse Charge lets you crash through enemies while riding and can soften roaming patrols before a normal fight begins. It spends resolve, so do not mash it into every skirmish, but use it when clustered enemies are exposed and you have room to keep moving.
6. Upgrade the Island Tracking Winds
Wind of Harmony and Wind of Concentration turn cleanup from guesswork into routing.
Wind of Harmony points toward Animal Sanctuaries, while Wind of Concentration points toward Archery Challenges. Buy and use them when you are ready to clean up the map instead of riding in circles after the story.
7. Treat Iki as Spoiler-Sensitive
The expansion works better if you avoid full route lists at first.
Iki’s strongest material is tied to Jin’s past, the Eagle, and the island’s local factions. Use light tips for your first pass, then save exact collectible maps and trophy cleanup for after you have seen the main arc.
Before You Sail
Do a short preparation pass in Toyotama before starting Journey Into The Past. Restock arrows, kunai, smoke bombs, sticky bombs, and healing supplies. Upgrade any armor you already rely on, especially if it supports your preferred combat style.
If you have not completed the base game’s Tadayori mythic tale, consider doing it before serious Iki cleanup. Tadayori’s Armor is especially useful for Iki’s archery challenges and one challenge is tied to wearing it before the activity opens.
Do not over-prepare to the point of delaying the DLC forever. Iki is not a post-game-only challenge, and the opening requirement is Act 2. The practical rule is simple: if you can handle mixed Mongol groups without spending every tool, you are ready enough to start.
On PS5, expect Director’s Cut features such as DualSense feedback, 3D audio support with headphones, Japanese voice lip sync, and smoother presentation options when the right display and settings are available. On PC, expect the Director’s Cut package rather than a separate Iki purchase, with PC display, input, and graphics options depending on your hardware and storefront build.
Combat and Exploration Habits
Iki assumes you remember the full Ghost of Tsushima toolbox. Stances, bows, ghost weapons, stealth, resolve management, and armor swapping all matter. If you only use katana attacks, the island’s new enemy mixes will feel harder than they need to be.
When a shaman appears, break the group’s rhythm. Sprint, bow, stealth, or ghost weapon your way to the support target, then return to normal stance matching. If you fight the nearest brute first while the shaman is still active, you can waste resolve solving a problem you could have prevented.
Use Horse Charge against open patrols and road encounters. Start with distance, line up the group, charge through, then dismount into Ghost Stance or cleanup attacks if the opening creates enough momentum. Indoors, cliffs, tight camps, and messy terrain are worse places to force it.
Let the guiding wind do real work. Iki has animal activities, archery platforms, banners, memories, tales, and unmarked moments. If your goal is general progress, follow tales and question marks. If your goal is a specific activity type, switch to the matching exploration wind and route several stops in one trip.
Archery and Side Activities
Archery Challenges are stricter than normal target practice. There are three time bands, and the fastest band can feel impossible before you improve the right setup. Start by clearing easier thresholds, claim the Charm of Concentration, then come back as the charm improves.
For better times, wear Tadayori’s Armor, equip bow-speed and concentration support charms, and use concentration after your first shot or when the target chain becomes hardest. If aiming is the only thing blocking progress, aim assist is a legitimate accessibility option.
Animal Sanctuaries are slower, calmer activities and are worth doing between combat-heavy routes. They also fit the expansion’s broader rhythm: one intense Mongol camp, one story lead, one side activity, then restock and move again. Mixing activity types keeps Iki from becoming a checklist grind.
Most cleanup can wait. Iki’s trophy and activity structure is friendly to post-story cleanup, so do not interrupt every story beat to chase icons unless that is how you enjoy playing. Finish enough of the main arc to regain travel freedom, then clean the island with tracking winds and a better gear setup.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not start Iki the moment Act 2 opens if basic Mongol groups still drain all your resolve - Spend a little time improving armor, charms, and combat confidence first.
- Do not ignore the travel warning before sailing - Handle urgent Tsushima errands before committing to the opening Iki sequence.
- Do not fight buffed groups from front to back - Find the shaman or support threat and remove it before spending resolve on the crowd.
- Do not use Horse Charge in cramped terrain - Save it for open roads, patrols, and groups with a clean approach line.
- Do not treat Tadayori’s Armor as optional for archery cleanup - It makes the hardest challenge times much more reasonable.
- Do not chase seven-second archery times before improving Charm of Concentration - Build the charm through easier clears, then return.
- Do not leave exploration winds set to the wrong target - Switch to Wind of Harmony for sanctuaries and Wind of Concentration for archery.
- Do not mix Legends assumptions into Iki planning - Legends is online co-op; Iki Island is the single-player expansion route.
- Do not spoil the entire island with collectible maps on your first landing - Play the main arc first unless you only care about completion speed.
