Gran Turismo 6 is a PlayStation 3 racing simulation developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Its main loop is Career Mode: enter events, earn stars and credits, advance through classes with licenses, buy or tune cars, and learn how PP, settings, tires, and driving assists affect performance.
This guide is scoped to Gran Turismo 6. Do not assume Gran Turismo 5’s progression habits or Gran Turismo 7’s Cafe, Menu Books, current Sport Mode, or PS4/PS5 systems apply here. GT6’s official online services ended on March 28, 2018, so treat online, DLC, Seasonal Event, Track Path Editor, and Vision GT access as historical or installed-version dependent unless you validate them in your own copy.
This is not a full event walkthrough, all-gold license guide, car list, credit farm, Seasonal Event guide, exact tuning sheet, or Vision GT availability list.
Essential Tips
1. Follow Career Mode Before Chasing Side Goals
Stars and classes are the structure.
GT6 Career Mode moves through classes, race events, stars, credits, and licenses. If you are unsure what to do next, open the current class, look at the available events, and build toward the next license or unlock instead of jumping straight into random car buying.
2. Read Event Requirements Before Spending Credits
The next race decides what your garage needs.
Credits buy cars and parts, but a fast car is only useful if it fits the event. Check the event rules, likely PP range, tire or car restrictions, and race format before buying upgrades.
3. Treat Licenses as Progress Checks
Pass the required tests first, perfect them later.
License tests unlock forward progress through Career Mode. Use them to learn braking, turning, throttle control, and car behavior, but do not stall your whole career chasing perfect medals before you need them.
4. Build a Small Useful Garage
One eligible, stable car beats several impulse purchases.
A beginner garage should solve the next few events, not just collect favorites. Keep cars that cover different restrictions or surfaces, then tune the car that actually has a job.
5. Watch PP After Every Major Change
Power, torque, and weight changes can move eligibility.
Performance Points are GT6’s shorthand for car performance. If you add power, reduce weight, or change settings, recheck PP before entering a race with a limit.
6. Use Settings Sheets for Experiments
Do not overwrite a setup that already works.
Each car has multiple settings sheets. Keep a stable baseline, make a second sheet for experiments, and reset defaults when you lose track of what changed.
7. Tune the Problem, Not the Whole Car
Fix grip, braking, stability, or acceleration deliberately.
If you are sliding, braking too late, running wide, or losing speed on exits, pick one likely cause and test one response. Buying every part at once makes the car harder to understand.
8. Use B-Spec Selectively
It helps with some Career event races, but it is not universal.
B-Spec lets an AI driver handle supported Career event races from the pre-race Quick Menu. It does not replace license tests or every side event, and it still needs a legal, competitive car.
9. Treat Online Features as Ended
Open Lobby, Quick Match, Community, and Seasonal Events are historical.
The official GT6 online service ended in 2018. Build your expectations around offline Career Mode, Arcade, Garage, tuning, and local play unless you have a separately validated modern setup.
10. Date-Stamp Update and Vision GT Advice
Installed version matters.
GT6 received items and features through updates, and Vision GT cars were tied to online update delivery. Before relying on post-release content, check the version shown in My Home and confirm what your installed copy can actually access.
Career Mode Priorities
- Use the current class screen as your map: Enter available events, earn stars, and open more events before worrying about completion cleanup.
- Advance licenses when they appear: Licenses are the bridge into higher classes, so treat them as part of normal progression.
- Spend around the next bottleneck: Buy parts or cars only after checking what is stopping you from entering or winning the next event.
- Keep side events in perspective: Coffee Breaks, Mission Races, and One-Make Races can add variety, but they should not distract from learning the main class flow.
- Avoid exact route dependency: Star thresholds, rewards, and ideal event orders can vary before becoming a hard route.
Driving and Tuning Habits
| Situation | Safer Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| New car | Run a few clean laps before tuning | Separates driving mistakes from setup problems |
| New event | Check PP, tire, car, and race rules first | Prevents wasted purchases |
| Oversteer or understeer | Slow entry, smooth throttle, then adjust grip or settings | Avoids masking bad inputs with random parts |
| Long braking zones | Brake earlier and straighter before chasing power | Makes exits cleaner and more repeatable |
| PP-limited race | Recheck PP after power or weight changes | Keeps the car eligible |
| Tuning test | Change one part or setting area at a time | Shows what actually helped |
| Supported long race | Consider B-Spec only after preparing the car | The AI still needs a capable setup |
| Wet or low-grip surface | Use smoother inputs and appropriate tires when available | Grip changes matter more than horsepower |
Online and Update Caveats
The official online shutdown notice says GT6 online services ended on March 28, 2018, and DLC distribution ended on January 31, 2018. Community, Open Lobby, Quick Match, and Seasonal Events should be treated as unavailable in normal play.
The same notice says offline portions can still be played. That is the safest scope for this guide: Career Mode, licenses, Garage, Car Settings, Tuning & Maintenance, PP management, B-Spec where supported, and local/offline modes.
Paid credit and DLC behavior needs a platform check. Official manual pages describe historical GT Store purchases and downloadable credits, while the shutdown notice says in-game install/redeem through GT Store ended with the online service. Do not plan a beginner route around buying credits.
Vision GT and other update content also depends on your installed version. If your copy is not fully updated, some content, menus, or features may differ from later official descriptions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not treat GT6 like GT5 or GT7 - Use GT6’s own Career Mode, stars, classes, licenses, PP, and offline caveats.
-
Do not buy before checking the event - Regulations can make a favorite car or part useless for the next race.
-
Do not chase perfect license medals immediately - Clear progress first, then return for stricter medals after your driving improves.
-
Do not tune only for horsepower - Tires, braking, weight, PP, and stability can matter more than top speed.
-
Do not overwrite your baseline settings sheet - Keep one working setup before experimenting.
-
Do not ignore PP changes - Power and weight changes can push a car out of an event.
-
Do not expect B-Spec everywhere - It is for supported Career event races, not license tests or every challenge.
-
Do not rely on Seasonal Event or credit-farm advice - Online services ended in 2018, and economy routes need current setup checks.
-
Do not assume every Vision GT/update item is available on a fresh install - Check the installed version and actual menus.
-
Do not buy or tune from memory alone - Check the event and test the car before spending heavily.
