Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga is a cinematic action-adventure developed by Ninja Theory and published by Xbox Game Studios. Official storefronts may also label it Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II; this guide covers that sequel, not Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice or the later Senua action-adventure announced for 2027.
Use this as a spoiler-light first-playthrough guide for Focus, traversal, puzzle awareness, combat timing, collectible cleanup, and current Enhanced-version scope. It is not a full walkthrough, collectible route, trophy guide, boss guide, accessibility-settings guide, or platform-performance review.
Content warning: Hellblade II is rated M for Mature with intense violence, blood/gore, strong language, partial nudity, and Senua’s experience of psychosis. This guide keeps discussion non-graphic and focused on play.
Current version note: This guide is scoped to the Enhanced version era. Performance Mode is listed for Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro, not Xbox Series S; PC/Steam details include Very High graphics, DLSS4/Multi Frame Gen, Steam Deck Verified status, and DualSense support, but exact settings can vary by build and hardware.
Essential Tips
1. Watch for Control Handoffs
The game can move smoothly between cinematic framing and control.
If Senua is climbing, crawling, staggering forward, or squeezing through a tight space, test gentle movement before assuming you are still watching a cutscene. The game is intentionally minimal with prompts, so small input checks can prevent stalled progress.
2. Let White Markings Guide Your Route
Marked rocks and objects often show where Senua can go.
When the path is unclear, scan walls, ledges, rocks, squeeze gaps, and side objects for pale markings. They can point to the main route, a climbable surface, a puzzle angle, or an optional path toward a collectible.
3. Use Focus Before You Force a Puzzle
Focus is the main verb for perspective and puzzle progress.
If a rune shape, hidden path, bubble-like switch, or strange viewpoint seems unsolved, slow down and try Focus from a few angles. The puzzle answer is often about seeing the right relationship, not rushing to the next object.
4. Treat the Voices as In-Game Cues
They sometimes point you toward Focus, perspective, or danger.
Keep subtitles and audio readable enough that you can notice puzzle hints. Do not treat every line as an instruction, but when the voices emphasize focus, looking, or the shape of the space, pause and re-check the scene.
5. Dodge Red Attacks
Red-glow attacks are the ones to evade first.
Blocking is useful, but red-flash or red-aura attacks are safer to handle with a dodge, especially while you are learning timing. Directional dodges can keep Senua close enough to counter instead of backing her completely out of range.
6. Learn Parry Timing, Then Use It Selectively
A late block can stagger enemies and charge momentum.
Parry timing is tight, so practice it on readable attacks before relying on it in a messy fight. If an enemy combo feels hard to read, dodge the string first, then counter after the final swing.
7. Save Heavy Attacks for Defense Breaks
Heavy attacks are slower but better against blocking enemies.
Do not wind up a heavy attack just because the button is available. Use it after an enemy finishes a combo, after a dodge creates space, or when a shield or guard is stopping light attacks from doing useful work.
8. Use Focus in Combat When It Matters
The mirror is strongest when it creates a clean opening.
Once combat Focus is available and charged, activate it when you are in range and ready to attack. If you trigger it from too far away or during a bad enemy stance, you can waste the best part of the window.
9. Recover When Senua Is Down
Some knockdowns still give you a chance to survive.
If time slows while an enemy prepares a finishing blow, respond immediately with the prompted recovery behavior or Focus if available. Do not set the controller down until the screen clearly confirms a death or checkpoint reset.
10. Check Side Paths Before Moving On
The campaign is linear, but collectibles sit off the main line.
When the path opens for a moment, look behind rocks, around bends, near shorelines, and beside ruins before continuing. The known collectible categories are Lorestangir and Hidden Faces, and both reward careful scanning.
11. Use Chapter Select for Cleanup
Missed collectibles do not need a full replay immediately.
For a first run, keep moving if a collectible search starts damaging the pacing or your attention. Chapter and checkpoint selection are the safer place to clean up exact Lorestangir and Hidden Face locations later.
12. Save Dark Rot for After You Understand the Game
Dark Rot is a post-story challenge with progress-loss stakes.
Finish the story first, learn the combat rhythm, and then decide whether Dark Rot is worth attempting. It is an optional Enhanced feature, not the default way to experience a first playthrough.
Combat Basics
| Situation | Best Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Normal incoming attack | Block late if you can read it | A well-timed block can parry and open a counter |
| Red-flash attack | Dodge with a direction | It avoids the heavy hit and can keep you close enough to respond |
| Blocking enemy | Time a heavy attack after their action | Heavy attacks are better at breaking defense |
| Vulnerable enemy | Use light attacks to capitalize quickly | Light attacks are faster when a guard is already open |
| Charged mirror | Activate Focus from close range | The window is strongest when Senua can immediately attack |
| Knockdown state | React until the checkpoint is confirmed | Some downed moments allow recovery |
Puzzles and Exploration
| Clue | What to Try |
|---|---|
| Rune or symbol shape | Move until the environment lines up, then use Focus |
| Pale/white markings | Check for climb, squeeze, side path, or collectible access |
| Voices mention Focus or perspective | Stop moving and reframe the scene |
| Rock face shape | Zoom/Focus carefully and check for a hidden tree path |
| Lorestangir totem | Approach and inspect it instead of walking past |
| No clear HUD prompt | Test movement and interaction deliberately |
Enhanced Version Scope
| Feature | Player Guidance |
|---|---|
| Performance Mode | Listed for Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro; do not assume Series S support |
| PC/Steam graphics | Very High preset, DLSS4/Multi Frame Gen, and Steam Deck Verified status are listed, but exact settings depend on build and hardware |
| DualSense support | PC/Steam patch notes and PlayStation page support it broadly; exact behavior depends on platform setup |
| Dark Rot | Unlocks after completing the story and can reset progress if failed |
| Developer Commentary | Unlocks after completing the story |
| December 2025 patch | Fixes rain, projectile collision, and integrated-GPU visual issues; not a strategy change |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not stand still during unclear cinematic moments - Test movement when Senua appears to be climbing, crawling, or pushing forward.
-
Do not ignore white markings - They often point to traversal, puzzle spaces, or optional paths.
-
Do not brute-force rune puzzles without Focus - Rebuild the shape from the right angle before moving on.
-
Do not mute the voices so low that puzzle cues disappear - Keep the mix readable enough to catch useful hints.
-
Do not block red attacks as your first answer - Dodge them until you know the timing.
-
Do not swing heavy attacks into active enemy combos - Wait for a recovery window or a defensive enemy.
-
Do not trigger combat Focus from across the arena - Be close enough to use the slowed window immediately.
-
Do not stop reacting when Senua falls down - Some knockdowns still allow recovery.
-
Do not sprint past every side path - Lorestangir and Hidden Faces are easy to miss in a linear route.
-
Do not start Dark Rot as your first serious run - Learn the chapters and combat before accepting progress-loss stakes.
