Heroes of Might and Magic V Tips - Beginner Strategy Guide

Beginner Heroes of Might and Magic V tips for heroes, towns, resources, creature growth, skills, initiative, exploration, and combat positioning.

On this page

Heroes of Might and Magic V is a turn-based strategy game developed by Nival Interactive and published by Ubisoft. The base game is about exploring the adventure map, developing towns, recruiting armies, leveling heroes, and winning tactical battles through positioning, skills, spells, and initiative planning.

This guide covers base Heroes V fundamentals. It does not cover Hammers of Fate, Tribes of the East, Heroes 5.5, exact campaign routes, faction tier lists, or optimized build orders.

Essential Tips

1. Think in Days and Weeks

Daily movement wins the map; weekly growth wins the army race.

Mines produce every day, and creature growth is planned around the week. When choosing between a loose resource pile, a mine, a dwelling, or a fight, ask what improves the next few turns and the next recruitment cycle instead of only what looks valuable now.

2. Claim Wood, Ore, and Gold Early

Basic resources unlock the town plan.

Gold pays for heroes, buildings, and troops, while wood and ore are common building bottlenecks. Prioritize reachable Sawmills, Ore Pits, loose piles, and Gold Mines when the guards are manageable. If a mine is too expensive to clear, gather nearby resources and come back with a stronger army.

3. Build Towns for Growth and Momentum

A town that only saves money can still fall behind.

City Hall and Capitol improve income, but creature growth and recruitment matter just as much. Citadel and Castle upgrades increase base creature growth, dwellings unlock units, the Tavern enables hero recruitment, and the Marketplace helps correct resource shortages. Build for the map problem in front of you.

4. Use Extra Heroes With a Purpose

Every hero should have a job.

Once you can recruit another hero, avoid making everyone chase the same objective. A main hero should take important fights and experience. Other heroes can gather safe resources, visit towns, scout roads, or help move troops where they are needed.

5. Treat External Dwellings as Long-Term Value

A dwelling is not just a side stop.

Adventure-map dwellings can let you recruit creatures and may boost weekly growth for that creature type across your empire. If a dwelling is near your route and the fight is affordable, it can pay off for multiple future weeks, especially before a week rollover.

6. Pick Skills Toward a Plan

Random hero growth creates weak late-game turns.

Attack and Defense shape creature damage, Spell Power and Knowledge shape magic, and Morale, Luck, and mana influence combat reliability. Heroes V also has ability prerequisites, so build toward a coherent role: fighter, caster, logistics support, or a faction-specific plan once you understand its requirements.

7. Read the Initiative Bar Before Acting

Heroes V combat is not a simple one-turn-per-stack rhythm.

The ATB system means fast creatures can act more often than slow ones. Before moving a stack, check which enemy acts next. A slow, heavy unit may need protection, while a fast unit can sometimes strike, reposition, or wait for a better opening.

8. Set Up the First Combat Turn

Positioning can decide the fight before damage starts.

Protect shooters and fragile casters, keep slow melee stacks from blocking key lanes, and do not place weak units where area damage or enemy ranged attacks punish them immediately. If you have Tactics options, use the setup rows to make the opening cleaner.

9. Deploy Only What Helps the Fight

More stacks are not always safer.

Against ranged or magic enemies, weak stacks can become free losses. If a stack cannot contribute meaningful damage, blocking, retaliation control, or protection, consider leaving it out of the battle when the scenario allows it.

10. Save Before Irreversible Risks

One bad fight can waste an entire week.

Save before high-loss neutral fights, town assaults, major skill choices, and long route commitments. Multiple saves are especially useful in campaigns, where an earlier map decision can shape later missions.

11. Separate Base Game Advice From Expansion Advice

Heroes V discussions often mix versions.

The base game has six factions: Academy, Dungeon, Haven, Inferno, Necropolis, and Sylvan. Hammers of Fate and Tribes of the East add their own content and assumptions. Do not copy Fortress, Stronghold, alternate-upgrade, or mod advice into a base-game plan without checking the version.

Opening Priorities

ScoutingReveal roads, mines, dwellings, and neutral guardsYou need route information before spending the week

HeroesAssign one main fighter and clear support jobsLogistics should not stall combat progress
DwellingsCapture affordable external dwellings before growth mattersRecruitment and growth bonuses improve later weeks

Combat Habits

  1. Check the ATB order first: Look at who acts next before moving, attacking, waiting, or casting.

  2. Protect shooters and casters: Put fragile ranged stacks where melee enemies cannot immediately reach them.

  3. Use fast creatures deliberately: High initiative can create extra turns, but only if the stack survives after committing.

  4. Respect retaliation: Do not spend valuable stacks into bad melee trades when a blocker, spell, or different target would reduce losses.

  5. Keep weak stacks out of bad matchups: Ranged and magic-heavy fights can punish low-value deployments.

  6. Fight for map value: A costly battle is easier to justify when it unlocks a mine, dwelling, town, artifact route, or strategic passage.

  7. Cast with timing in mind: Haste, slow, buffs, control, and damage spells are strongest when they change the next few ATB turns.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not spend the opening wandering without a resource target - Mines, loose piles, and dwellings are what turn exploration into growth.

  2. Do not rush only income buildings while your army stagnates - Troop growth and dwellings decide whether you can clear the next guard.

  3. Do not leave the Tavern and extra hero options unused - Safe gathering, scouting, and troop movement all take time.

  4. Do not fight every neutral stack just because it is visible - Check what the fight unlocks and whether the losses delay a better objective.

  5. Do not ignore week rollover - Growth matters most when you build, recruit, and move troops in time to use it.

  6. Do not pick hero skills without a role - Scattered abilities make later fights harder to plan.

  7. Do not treat initiative like a normal round order - Fast creatures can act more often, and slow stacks can lose tempo if exposed.

  8. Do not place fragile stacks in the open before battle starts - Opening formation determines how quickly the enemy can punish them.

  9. Do not mix expansion or mod advice into the base game unchecked - Version differences can change factions, units, upgrades, and balance assumptions.
