Insurgency is the 2014 Source-engine tactical FPS developed and published by New World Interactive. This guide is for the standalone 2014 game, not the older INSURGENCY: Modern Infantry Combat Half-Life 2 mod and not Insurgency: Sandstorm.
Content warning: Steam describes Insurgency as potentially containing Frequent Violence or Gore and General Mature Content. This guide keeps combat discussion non-graphic and focused on game systems.
Use this as an onboarding guide for objective play, co-op, PvP, classes, supply, weight, and communication. It does not cover exact weapon stats, competitive meta picks, map callouts, server status, current player counts, or real-world tactics.
Essential Tips
1. Learn the Objective Before the Weapon List
Insurgency punishes players who ignore the mode.
Most modes are built around capturing ground, defending ground, destroying caches, escorting or stopping a high-value target, protecting intel, or surviving AI pressure. Before worrying about a preferred weapon, read the objective marker and ask what the team is trying to finish this round.
2. Use Bot Practice First
A quiet first session teaches the interface faster than a live server.
Steam lists offline practice with bots, and that is the cleanest place to learn movement, aiming, objectives, class selection, supply, resupply, and the limited HUD without also learning a server’s custom rules.
3. Treat PvP and Co-op as Different Lessons
The same controls lead to different habits.
PvP modes test objective timing, respawns, territory, and enemy-player pressure. Co-op modes focus on mission objectives against AI, cache defense or destruction, survival pressure, and moving together through a sequence. Do not assume a habit that works in one mode is automatically correct in the other.
4. Pick a Role Before Spending Supply
Class choice is a team job, not a cosmetic choice.
Classes are asymmetrical by team and shape what gear you can bring. Choose your role around the mode and squad need first, then spend supply on equipment that helps that role. A useful basic kit is better than an overloaded kit that slows you down or leaves your team missing a job.
5. Keep Loadouts Purpose-Built
Supply and weight are part of the difficulty.
Gear costs supply, and equipped items affect weight, stamina, and movement. Start with a simple, controllable setup, then add only what you know you will use. Heavy armor, extra equipment, and backup items all have an opportunity cost.
6. Respect the Minimal HUD
Insurgency gives you less screen help than arcade shooters.
Use objective information, the overhead map, teammate positions, and sound instead of waiting for a full UI to solve the fight. Build the habit of checking where the objective is before sprinting toward noise.
7. Communicate Carefully
Voice chat has game rules attached.
Insurgency supports squad communication and proximity voice. Nearby enemies can hear local voice in some situations, and community servers may adjust voice rules. Keep callouts short, useful, and tied to objectives rather than filling the channel.
8. Stop Reloading by Reflex
Partial magazines can come back later.
The community guide notes that reloading before a magazine is empty puts that magazine back into rotation. Do not reload after every shot unless you understand the tradeoff, because you may meet that partly used magazine again at a worse moment.
9. Treat Health as a Resource
You cannot rely on regeneration to erase mistakes.
The community guide describes health as non-regenerating. That makes clean movement, cover, spacing, and objective patience more important than trading damage and hoping to recover.
10. Watch the Team Before You Push
A solo entry is usually a weak entry.
Insurgency is built around squad and objective pressure. If teammates are regrouping, reloading, resupplying, or watching a different entrance, wait a beat and move with them. In co-op, this also keeps eliminated players from spending the objective chain waiting for the next respawn opportunity.
11. Check Server Context
Community servers can change the feel of the same mode.
Server browser entries may include custom maps, custom options, passwords, branch differences, and community rules. Read the server name and settings before assuming a guide, mode description, or habit applies exactly.
12. Keep Sandstorm Advice Separate
Sandstorm is a different game.
Insurgency: Sandstorm has its own platforms, roles, modes, customization, and later design. If a video, post, or loadout guide says Sandstorm, do not treat it as 2014 Insurgency advice unless it clearly says the behavior is shared and current for the older game.
Mode Habits
| Situation | Beginner Habit |
|---|---|
| Territorial PvP | Find the next objective before chasing fights |
| Cache modes | Protect or destroy the cache according to your side’s job |
| Escort modes | Stay aware of the high-value target instead of drifting away |
| Firefight-style rounds | Value each life and coordinate objective pressure |
| Co-op objectives | Move as a group and expect the objective chain to matter |
| Survival or defense | Save supply and positioning for the next wave, not just the current one |
| Custom servers | Read rules and settings before judging the base game |
Loadout Habits
| Choice | Good First Approach | Avoid This |
|---|---|---|
| Primary weapon | Pick something your class can use for the expected range | Chasing a “best gun” list with no mode context |
| Attachments | Add only what solves a problem you understand | Spending supply because a slot is available |
| Armor and vest | Balance protection, ammunition, and movement | Maxing weight before you know the map flow |
| Explosives | Bring them for objective or denial value | Throwing them where teammates need to enter |
| Sidearm | Treat it as backup, not the center of the plan | Overspending on backup gear while the main role suffers |
| Resupply | Rebuild for the next objective | Repeating a bad kit because it worked once |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not chase kills away from the objective - Most modes are won by captures, caches, escorts, intel, survival, or team elimination conditions, not by wandering for duels.
-
Do not copy Sandstorm loadouts blindly - Sandstorm is a separate game with different systems and current support.
-
Do not ignore weight - A heavier kit can affect stamina and movement, so every extra item needs a purpose.
-
Do not spend all supply before learning the mode - A simple kit makes it easier to understand why you won or lost a fight.
-
Do not reload after every short burst - Partial magazines can return later, which makes careless reloads a real cost.
-
Do not use voice chat as background noise - Proximity and server rules can make communication a gameplay liability.
-
Do not treat co-op like target practice only - AI objective modes still require sequencing, regrouping, and cache or defense awareness.
-
Do not assume every server is vanilla - Custom maps, settings, passwords, and branch differences can change what you are joining.
-
Do not turn this into a real-world tactics manual - This guide covers game systems and beginner habits only.
-
Do not trust exact old numbers blindly - Supply values, branch behavior, server rules, and mode details should be checked in the current client.
