Islets Beginner Tips - Exploration, Upgrades, and Boss Fights

Beginner-friendly Islets tips for map checks, upgrades, orbs, movement abilities, boss fights, airship travel, and completion cleanup.

On this page

Islets is a bright metroidvania about Iko, a hopeful warrior traveling between floating islands in a small airship. Your main loop is simple to understand: explore an island, improve Iko, find ways to reconnect the world, then return to older areas with new movement and combat tools.

This guide is beginner-friendly because it avoids route spoilers and focuses on habits that work across the full game. Islets can still get busy during boss fights and airship battles, especially when the screen fills with hazards, so treat “beginner” as a guide style rather than a promise that every fight is easy.

Essential Tips

1. Check the Map Before Wandering

Islets rewards curiosity, but blind backtracking gets expensive in time. When you feel stuck, open the map and look for unfinished rooms, unexplored exits, question marks, missing connections, or an island you have not pushed far enough. A blocked route often means the answer is not in the room you are staring at; it may be on another island that grants the move you need.

Use the map as a rhythm check after every major discovery. Explore until you hit a wall, mark the obstacle mentally, then move to the next open route instead of forcing the same jump or enemy room for ten minutes.

2. Reconnect Islands as Soon as You Can

The world opens up when magnetic cores bring islands together. Reconnected landmasses create new bridges, new paths through old spaces, and cleaner return routes. If a core objective is available, prioritize it over minor cleanup unless you are one room away from a clear reward.

This matters because Islets is built around return visits. A place that looked empty can become useful once another island connects beside it or a new ability changes your approach angle. Think of each reconnection as a world-state change, not just a story beat.

3. Treat Every New Ability as a Key

Double jumps, wall movement, slams, boosts, arrow tricks, and ship upgrades are not only combat toys. They are permission slips for earlier rooms. After you earn a new move, revisit the obstacles you remember: high ledges, strange walls, floors that looked breakable, distant targets, and paths that seemed just out of reach.

Do not rush past tutorials. Islets usually teaches new tools cleanly, and the first few rooms after an ability often show the exact logic you will need later under pressure.

4. Choose Upgrades for Your Weakest Habit

Upgrade choices can improve sword damage, arrow performance, health, invincibility time, orb income, and even the Skyship. There is no need to chase a perfect build on a first run. Instead, pick the upgrade that fixes the mistake you make most often.

If you take hits while learning boss patterns, health or longer invincibility gives you more room to recover. If you play carefully from range, arrow ammo, rate, or damage makes exploration safer. If you like aggressive close combat, sword upgrades help shorten enemy and boss phases. If airship fights are the part you dread, ship damage deserves attention when it appears.

5. Spend Orbs on Useful Map Tools

Orbs come from enemies, pots, and exploration, and they are easy to spend on raw strength. Early damage and health help, but do not ignore map-related purchases. Map markers are cheap enough to buy early, while upgrade markers are a major quality-of-life purchase for completion cleanup.

The best approach is to balance power and information. If enemies are taking too long, buy strength. If you keep missing collectibles, buy mapping help. If you are near the end and want all upgrades, markers and area totals save far more time than another small stat bump.

6. Use Arrows to Control Risk

Iko has melee attacks, but arrows let you test threats from a safer distance. Use them on flying enemies, awkward hazards, and rooms where rushing in would knock you into spikes or pits. If you run low, shift back to sword attacks and rebuild your rhythm instead of spending every arrow before a boss door.

Arrow upgrades are especially useful if you prefer patient play. More ammo and better fire rate reduce the number of risky close-range trades you need to take.

7. Dodge Through Patterns, Not Panic

Bosses are about pattern reading. Watch how attacks change as health drops, then dodge with intent. Rolling too early can leave you standing inside the next hazard, while rolling too late turns every phase into a scramble.

On a new boss, give yourself one attempt where your goal is observation. Learn where projectiles start, which attacks leave punish windows, and whether the arena gives you a safe side. Once you know the pattern, attack in short bursts and leave room to escape.

8. Respect Airship Battles

Airship segments feel different from normal platforming. You are managing space, projectiles, and ship upgrades rather than Iko’s usual jump-and-roll toolkit. Keep your movement small, focus on survival first, and avoid drifting into corners unless the pattern clearly allows it.

If an airship boss is dragging on, consider future Skyship damage upgrades. Shorter phases mean fewer chances to make a small mistake during dense projectile patterns.

9. Use Teleporters and Shortcuts Deliberately

As islands expand, walking everywhere by memory becomes inefficient. When you activate a teleporter or open a shortcut, pause long enough to understand what it connects. A good shortcut can turn a painful return trip into a quick cleanup run.

Before leaving an area, ask two questions: did I open the return path, and did I note what still blocks me here? That habit keeps your next visit focused.

10. Ask for Objective Help When You Are Truly Stuck

There is in-game help for your next objective, but it costs orbs. Do not buy hints every time you hesitate. First check the map, revisit open exits, and test your newest ability. If you have done those things and still have no direction, paying for help is better than wandering until the game stops being fun.

The orb cost is part of the decision. Spend for direction when you need momentum; save when you already have obvious unexplored rooms.

11. Delay Full Cleanup Until Late Game

Islets hides many upgrades, and some are easier to collect after your movement kit is fuller. If you try to clear every island on first contact, you will waste time poking at paths designed for later tools.

Grab obvious rewards, solve nearby challenges, and move on when the remaining path feels ability-locked. Once you have more mobility and map tools, cleanup becomes smoother and less repetitive.

12. Plan Completion Around All 60 Upgrades

A completion-minded run eventually cares about every upgrade. The all-upgrades route also ties into extra endgame content, so avoid treating upgrade tokens as optional decoration if you want to see everything.

For a relaxed first run, finish the adventure naturally and buy upgrade markers before serious cleanup. Then check each island’s totals, revisit missing rooms, and save postgame challenges for after your build is stronger.

13. Let Boss Losses Teach Upgrade Priorities

When a boss beats you, identify why. If you died with the boss nearly defeated, more damage may shorten the fight. If you died early, health or invincibility helps more. If you could not reach openings safely, learn the dodge pattern before changing your build.

This keeps upgrades practical. You are not building an abstract perfect Iko; you are solving the problem that actually stopped your run.

14. Keep Moving Between Islands

The biggest beginner trap is assuming your current island must contain the next answer. Islets often wants you to alternate between islands, reconnect land, and let one biome solve another biome’s roadblock.

If every visible route feels impossible, leave. Explore another island, look for a core, earn a movement tool, or gather enough orbs for help. Progress often comes from changing context.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not ignore unfinished map edges - Unexplored exits are usually better leads than random room sweeps.
  2. Do not postpone every magnetic core - Reconnecting islands can create the route you are missing.
  3. Do not treat new abilities as combat-only upgrades - Movement tools often unlock old rooms.
  4. Do not pick upgrades without thinking about your deaths - Choose health, damage, arrows, or ship power based on what is actually costing you progress.
  5. Do not spend all your orbs before buying map help - Markers can save hours during completion cleanup.
  6. Do not mash dodge through boss phases - Learn the pattern, roll with timing, then punish.
  7. Do not fight every enemy at sword range - Arrows are safer when the room layout is awkward.
  8. Do not forget airship upgrades - Ship fights use a different rhythm and can benefit from dedicated power.
  9. Do not force full island cleanup too early - Some rewards are easier after later movement abilities.
  10. Do not wander forever to avoid paying for a hint - If you have checked the map and open islands, objective help can restore momentum.
