Kirby & The Amazing Mirror Beginner Tips - Maps, Phones, and Copy Abilities

Beginner tips for Kirby & The Amazing Mirror covering maps, Cell Phone calls, Big Switches, copy abilities, items, treasures, and GBA/Wii U/Switch Online differences.

On this page

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is a Nintendo-published Game Boy Advance Kirby platform adventure with a more open, interconnected structure than a normal stage-by-stage Kirby game. GameFAQs lists Flagship as developer, while WiKirby describes the release as produced by HAL Laboratory and developed by Flagship and Dimps, so this guide keeps the credit language broad.

This guide is for beginner and returning-player habits: reading the map, using the Cell Phone, understanding Big Switches, choosing copy abilities, and keeping GBA, Wii U Virtual Console, and Nintendo Switch Online behavior separate. It is not a full walkthrough, all-treasure route, exact ability-route guide, boss script, or 100% checklist.

Difficulty caveat: Amazing Mirror is approachable as a Kirby game, but its non-linear map can be confusing if you treat every room like a one-way stage. Use this as a navigation and systems guide, then save exact routes for 100%.

Essential Tips

1. Think of the Mirror World as a Web

You are not just clearing numbered stages.

Amazing Mirror is built around connected areas, mirrors, routes, switches, and bosses that do not all have to be handled in one strict order. When you hit a dead end, check whether another room, mirror, switch, or area connection gives you a better path instead of forcing the same door repeatedly.

2. Use the Map Before You Wander

Maps turn the maze from guesswork into route planning.

Area maps are found in treasure chests and improve the Pause Menu map. When you collect one, pause and look at how rooms connect. If a route still feels unclear, use the map to identify unopened paths and suspicious exits rather than drifting through the same loop.

3. Treat Big Switches as Progress

A switch can matter even when it is not a boss or treasure.

Big Switches restore health and open useful connections back toward rest areas or the hub. If you find one, press it before leaving. Those shortcuts make later cleanup and boss attempts much less painful.

4. Spend Phone Battery on Problems, Not Convenience

Calling other Kirbys is powerful, but Battery is a resource.

The Cell Phone can call the other Kirbys for help, and GameFAQs’ guide also notes the L-button return to the Mirror Area. Use calls when you need help in a fight, want backup for a route, or need to regroup. If the room is already safe, save Battery for a real problem.

5. Let CPU Kirbys Help Without Depending on Them

Allies can ease fights and puzzles, but the route still belongs to you.

WiKirby notes that CPU-controlled Kirbys fill in when other players are not controlling the extra Kirbys. They can make combat easier, but do not assume they will solve navigation for you. Keep learning room exits, map links, and ability needs yourself.

6. Test Copy Abilities as Tools

A power is not only a weapon.

StrategyWiki’s ability notes support broad utility roles: fire-type powers can light fuses, some powers break steel blocks, Cutter and Cupid can cut ropes, Hammer can hit posts, Mini fits through tight spaces, and Missile can break certain obstacles. If a room seems blocked, ask what kind of interaction it is hinting at before you abandon it.

7. Drop a Bad Ability When Inhale Is Better

Keeping the wrong power can make simple rooms harder.

If your current ability is not useful for the next room, drop it and return to basic Kirby tools: inhaling, exhaling stars, floating, sliding, and watching enemy patterns. A rare ability can be worth carrying, but not if it keeps you from fighting safely.

8. Open Chests, but Do Not Invent Treasure Routes

Chests matter for completion, maps, and collection items.

Treasure chests can hold area maps, Spray Paint, Notes, Vitalities, and other rewards, and WiKirby says every chest is required for 100% completion. This guide does not list exact chest locations. For a first clear, open what you can, mark what you cannot reach, and come back with a dedicated route later.

9. Use Healing and Battery Pickups Deliberately

Food, Maxim Tomatoes, Vitalities, and Batteries solve different problems.

Small food heals a little, stronger recovery heals more, Maxim Tomatoes fully heal, Vitalities increase maximum HP for all players, and Batteries refill phone use. Do not waste full recovery while nearly healthy, and do not leave a Battery behind if you have been calling allies often.

10. Keep Version Rules Separate

GBA, Wii U VC, and Switch Online are not the same multiplayer setup.

Original GBA play is the source of the 1-4 player local multiplayer framing. Wii U Virtual Console is one-player and lacks the original communication features. Nintendo Switch Online access is through the Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics app with Expansion Pack membership, and the app supports local wireless and online multiplayer for compatible games.

Map and Phone Habits

SituationBetter Habit
You find an area mapPause and study newly visible connections before moving on
A room loops backCheck whether a different exit, mirror, or switch opened a route
You press a Big SwitchTreat the new connection as a shortcut for later cleanup
A boss path feels too hardExplore another route and return with more health, a better ability, or a clearer map
You are low on BatterySave phone calls for fights, regrouping, or route pressure
Other Kirbys arriveUse the opening they create, but keep moving with your own route plan
You return to the Mirror AreaRe-enter through the best available connection instead of repeating old rooms by habit

The safest mental model is simple: map first, switch second, route third. If you reverse that order, the Mirror World becomes much harder to read.

Copy Ability and Item Habits

Copy abilities should be treated as keys, weapons, and movement options. You do not need to memorize every ability route on a first playthrough, but you should remember the broad categories.

NeedAbilities or Items to Consider
Ropes or hanging targetsCutter or Cupid-style ranged cutting
FusesFire, Burning, Bomb, or Laser-style fire/fuse interaction
Hard blocks or barriersHammer, Burning, Missile, or other clearly forceful powers
Small passagesMini, while remembering it restricts normal options
Safer air controlCupid or normal floating, depending on the room
Boss pressureA comfortable combat ability, allies, and enough recovery
Long cleanupMaps, Big Switch shortcuts, Batteries, and Collection Room tracking

Do not turn this table into an exact route. It is a recognition guide. If a room appears to require a specific power, mark it mentally and return when the game gives you that power nearby or when you are following a checked route.

Version Notes

Version / ContextWhat Matters
Game Boy AdvanceOriginal target version. GameFAQs lists local players 1-4, and Nintendo UK refers to original communication features including Multi-Pak Link and Single Pak Link. Exact cartridge, adapter, and mode requirements depend on your hardware setup.
Wii U Virtual ConsoleNintendo UK says original communication features are unavailable and the Wii U VC version supports one player. Treat this as a solo version, and remember Wii U/3DS eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023.
Nintendo Switch OnlineThe Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics app lists Kirby & The Amazing Mirror as included for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. The app lists local wireless 2-4 and online 2-4 for compatible games, while WiKirby says this release supports online multiplayer. It is app/subscription access, not a standalone Switch purchase.
Wrapper featuresNintendo lists single-player rewind, save/jump-back style convenience, screen size/filter options, and Save Data Cloud for the GBA app. Use these for practice, but do not treat rewind as part of original GBA route logic.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not leave unopened chests behind without a reason - Chests can contain maps, collection items, and completion progress.

  2. Do not keep running through the same loop - Pause, read the map, and look for another exit or switch connection.

  3. Do not waste phone calls in safe rooms - Battery is more useful when a fight, regroup, or route problem needs backup.

  4. Do not ignore Battery pickups after using the phone - Refill before the next difficult section.

  5. Do not hold a poor ability forever - Drop it when inhale, star shots, or a room-offered power would be safer.

  6. Do not treat every copy ability as pure damage - Many powers are also puzzle or traversal tools.

  7. Do not skip Big Switches - They heal, checkpoint, and open useful connections.

  8. Do not force bosses with low health and no plan - Explore, heal, bring a comfortable ability, or call allies before trying again.

  9. Do not chase 100% from memory - Exact treasure and ability routes need a checked map route, not guesswork.
