LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Beginner Tips - Story, Free Play, Studs, and Bricks

Start LEGO Marvel Super Heroes with safe tips for Story Mode, Free Play, character abilities, studs, Red Bricks, Gold Bricks, hubs, co-op, and collectibles.

On this page

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes by Traveller’s Tales is an ability-driven LEGO action-adventure about Marvel heroes chasing Cosmic Bricks across LEGO Manhattan and Marvel locations. It is the original 2013 game, not LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 or LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, so route advice should stay focused on LEGO Manhattan, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Deadpool bonus levels, Red Bricks, Minikits, Gold Bricks, and Free Play cleanup.

This is a beginner-safe strategy guide, not a full collectible map. Use it to understand the loop before you start chasing every icon.

Best Early Route

1. Clear Story Mode First

Play the story levels normally the first time. Break objects, collect studs, and solve the puzzles in front of you, but do not restart every time you see a collectible behind a power you do not have yet.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is built around ability gates. A first-pass team may not have magnetism, telekinesis, digging, freezing, sandpits, claw switches, symbiote patches, or the right kind of strength for every optional object. Finishing the story gives you more characters and makes Free Play cleanup less frustrating.

2. Use Free Play for Serious Cleanup

After you clear levels once, return in Free Play with a broader roster. A good Free Play team covers the repeat puzzle language: flight, electricity, Spider-Man pulls and sense spots, gold-object melting, silver-object destruction, super strength, magnetism, telekinesis, digging, freezing, mind control, grates, shield switches, and character-specific patches.

If a Minikit is visible but unreachable, mark the ability it seems to require and move on. Forcing it with the wrong character wastes more time than returning later with the right power.

3. Unlock Red Bricks Before the Long Grind

Red Bricks unlock Extras, including stud multipliers and detectors. Red Bricks appear in bonus missions and are purchased in Deadpool’s room on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.

The practical route is to collect enough Gold Bricks to open bonus missions, grab Red Bricks from the missions you can handle, buy the useful Extras, then start the heavier hub and level cleanup. Multipliers make large stud goals much less repetitive.

4. Treat Manhattan as a Cleanup Hub, Not a Distraction

LEGO Manhattan is full of races, side missions, doorways, character tokens, vehicle tokens, Gold Bricks, and Stan Lee in Peril rescues. The map can pull you in many directions, so use the hub in passes:

PassGoal
Story passFollow the hologram/story route and do obvious nearby pickups only.
Red Brick passOpen bonus missions as Gold Brick totals allow.
Ability passReturn with better characters to solve locked hub puzzles.
Final cleanupChase remaining map icons, vehicles, characters, races, and rescue targets.

5. Keep Co-Op Focused

Local co-op works best when players split roles. One player can keep combat and studs moving while the other looks for build piles, sense spots, plugs, fires, gold panels, silver objects, or high platforms.

When puzzles need one specific character, pause the wandering and let that player solve the gate. The game is generous, but two players can also pull the camera and split-screen framing away from small interactables.

Character Ability Basics

Think in abilities, not favorites.

Ability TypeWhat It Usually Solves
FlightHigh platforms, airborne collectibles, fast hub travel
Spider-sense / hyper-senseHidden pulls, walls, plugs, climb spots, puzzle reveals
Web pulls / handlesDoors, plugs, panels, and trapped characters
ElectricityPower units and generators
Heat / beam attacksGold objects and certain locks
ExplosivesSilver LEGO objects
Super strength / big-fig strengthCracked walls, grips, heavy objects, vehicles
Shield useSwitches, deflection puzzles, safe movement through hazards
MagnetismBlue metal objects, bars, containers, vehicle parts
Telekinesis / mind controlRemote switches, rebuilds, moved objects, NPC puzzles
Freeze / fire controlWater, ice, flames, environmental hazards
Digging / sand / gratesHidden pieces, sandpits, small entrances, alternate routes

If a level blocks you, scan for the visual language first. LEGO puzzles usually show what they want: colored metal, cracked walls, gold plating, silver plating, electrical sockets, pull handles, grates, flames, water, or buildable loose bricks.

Studs and True Believer

Studs are the currency and the level score route. Break scenery while moving forward, follow stud trails, and collect loose pieces after fights. The usual values are silver 10, gold 100, blue 1,000, and purple 10,000.

Death costs studs, so do not panic-roll through hazards for a few low-value pickups. Once the True Believer meter is filled, it stays filled even if you lose studs later in the level, so switch your priority from greedy collection to finishing cleanly.

Use this stud order:

  1. First story pass - collect obvious studs and learn the level.
  2. Red Brick pass - prioritize stud multiplier Extras when available.
  3. Free Play pass - combine Minikit hunting with better stud routes.
  4. Late grind - use multipliers and comfortable repeat routes instead of grinding early.

Free Play and Collectibles

Minikits, Stan Lee in Peril, Red Bricks, and Gold Bricks are connected, but they are not the same task.

CollectibleBeginner Rule
MinikitsMost serious Minikit cleanup belongs in Free Play because many require specific abilities.
Stan Lee in PerilLook for trapped-character puzzles in both levels and the hub; many rescues also need Free Play powers.
Gold BricksTreat them as progress gates and completion rewards, not as a currency you spend.
Red BricksFind them in bonus missions, then buy the unlocked Extras in Deadpool’s Helicarrier room.
Characters / vehiclesBuy or unlock them as they become useful for missing ability coverage.

Do not try to write a full 100% checklist from memory. Exact location work needs screenshots, map checks, and an in-game route pass.

Hub and Co-Op Tips

Use the Helicarrier Regularly

Deadpool’s room matters because Red Brick Extras and Minikit comics are tied to it. Return there after bonus missions and Minikit sets instead of forgetting unlocks until the end.

Follow Story Holograms When Lost

If Manhattan feels too open, return to the story trail. Hubs are easier to understand once more locations, characters, and Gold Brick gates are open.

Build Everything Before Leaving an Area

Destroyed LEGO objects often leave hopping build pieces. Build piles can become switches, generators, handles, platforms, weapons, doors, or boss-phase tools. If pieces are bouncing, finish the build before running to the next marker.

Swap Characters Aggressively

The right superhero solves the puzzle faster than the strongest superhero. Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Wolverine, Thor, Magneto, Jean Grey, Iceman, Mister Fantastic, Sandman, and similar ability carriers all matter because the game expects varied powers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not restart a story level for every missed Minikit - many Minikits are designed for Free Play abilities.

  2. Do not spend the whole early game grinding studs - Red Brick multipliers make later stud totals easier.

  3. Do not ignore Red Bricks - useful Extras can shorten Gold Brick, Minikit, and stud cleanup.

  4. Do not assume Gold Bricks are spent - Treat them as total-count gates for bonus mission entrances.

  5. Do not chase LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 advice - that sequel has different hubs, bricks, and roster assumptions.

  6. Do not rely on one favorite hero - puzzles are built around ability coverage.

  7. Do not leave bouncing build pieces unused - builds often create the next puzzle step or boss counter.

  8. Do not let co-op players pull in opposite directions during puzzle rooms - stay near the active interactable until the gate is solved.
