Lost in Random Beginner Tips - Dice Combat Guide

Beginner Lost in Random tips for Dicey, cards, crystals, coins, board-game battles, Golden Pins, and safer deck habits.

On this page

Lost in Random is a 2021 single-player action-adventure by Zoink and published by Electronic Arts. This guide is for the original campaign starring Even and Dicey, not the later roguelike spinoff. The game looks like a dark fairy tale, but its fights are really about rhythm: break crystals, let Dicey collect them, roll into the Dicemension, spend Card Tokens, then reposition before time starts again.

Essential Tips

1. Learn the Crystal Loop First

Most early confusion comes from treating Even’s slingshot like a normal damage weapon. In regular fights, the slingshot is mainly your way to break crystals from enemies or the arena. Dicey gathers those shards, and enough shards draw cards into your hand. Once at least one card is drawn, you can throw Dicey and enter the Dicemension.

That means your first goal in a fight is not always to attack. It is often to circle safely, find crystals, pop them with clean shots, and avoid getting cornered while Dicey works. Robot crystals can come back, while environmental crystals are one-time pickups, so use arena crystals to start the engine and enemy crystals to keep it going.

2. Roll Dicey When You Have a Plan

Rolling Dicey gives Card Tokens equal to the pips rolled. The Dicemension pauses the action and lets you walk around, inspect your hand, and play cards as long as you can afford them. Use that pause deliberately. Check enemy positions, decide whether you need a weapon, trap, shield, or utility card, then place yourself where the card will matter when the fight resumes.

Do not rush out of the Dicemension just because the menu is open. It is one of your strongest defensive tools. If your hand is weak, consider what can still help: a cheap card can buy space, a pinned card can wait for a better roll, and movement during the pause can move Even away from danger.

3. Keep Your Deck Focused at 15 Cards

Once your Card Binder has enough cards, your active deck should contain exactly 15. That limit is helpful. Smaller, focused plans make each roll easier to use than a pile of flashy cards that all compete for tokens.

Build around a simple mix: at least one reliable weapon option, one ranged answer, one area or hazard card, one defensive or recovery tool, and a few low-cost plays that keep bad rolls useful. Duplicates are allowed, so if a card solves common problems, running more than one copy can make it appear more often. When a new card looks fun, test it for a few encounters, but remove cards that only sit in your hand.

4. Use Golden Pins to Hold Key Cards

Mannie Dex eventually rewards Golden Pins as you buy enough cards. A pinned card stays in your hand when you leave the Dicemension, which makes pins perfect for important but situational cards. Save a strong weapon for a boss phase, hold a trap until enemies group up, or keep a utility card while you fish for the tokens to afford it.

Pins do not replace drawing cards. You still need to draw at least one new card before throwing Dicey, so pinned cards are best used as preparation, not as a way to ignore the crystal loop.

5. Spend Coins on Card Growth

Coins are more than collectibles. They are your path to new cards, shop packs, and more consistent decks. Break blue pots when you see them, send Dicey through Dice Doors, finish side quests, and take fight rewards seriously. Buying cards fills Mannie Dex’s shop meter, and filling that meter unlocks additional card packs for sale.

Do not leave every purchase until late. The campaign gradually asks more from your deck, and a wider binder lets you replace weak early choices. At the same time, avoid buying randomly if you already know your deck is missing a role. Prioritize cards that solve fights you are actually losing.

6. Treat Board-Game Battles Differently

Some arenas are built around moving a piece across a board by rolling Dicey. These fights are not just enemy waves with a board painted underneath. Your win condition can be board progress, tile effects, or clearing cards that block the route.

During these encounters, keep an eye on both the enemies and the board piece. Use enemies to generate crystals, roll often enough to advance, and do not waste every token on damage if the piece needs movement. Some tiles can create helpful effects, so survival and board state can matter more than clearing every enemy as fast as possible.

7. Use Movement Cards and Dodges Defensively

Blink Dodge can help break crystals through enemies, but it is also a spacing tool. Lost in Random fights become messy when Even stands near groups, especially while waiting for Dicey to return. Dodge through or around enemies to create shooting lanes, then turn and pop crystals from a safer angle.

When cards create hazards or delayed effects, place them where enemies are going, not only where they are standing. A trap in the path between you and a charging enemy can buy more value than a trap dropped in panic under Even’s feet.

8. Balance Melee, Bows, and Effects

Melee weapon cards have durability, so every hit spends part of the card’s life. Bow cards have ammunition, and stacking bow cards can add arrows. This makes weapon cards temporary answers rather than permanent loadout pieces.

Use melee when an enemy is isolated or stunned by your positioning. Use bows when distance is safer, when enemies are hard to approach, or when you need to finish weak targets without entering a crowd. Hazards, bombs, and special effects are best when they control space or multiply damage on grouped enemies.

9. Check the Rules Tab When a Symbol Is Unclear

Lost in Random has a built-in Rules tab in the Settings menu. Use it. The game has icons for active card effects, timers, pins, card tokens, deck behavior, and shop systems, and a quick menu check is better than guessing during a fight.

The settings menu also includes helpful comfort options such as volume sliders, camera shake, brightness, subtitles, and difficulty. If combat timing or readability is getting in the way, adjust those before assuming your deck is the only problem.

10. Plan Completion Before the Final Stretch

If you care about cards, pages, puzzles, or trophies, start paying attention early. Storybook pages are tied to puzzles and region exploration, Dice Doors are one-time coin rewards, and Mannie Dex’s shop progression depends on spending coins over time. Some optional goals are easier when you handle them during the chapter where they appear.

Before moving deep into the last realm, spend coins, check your card collection, and think about whether you want a clean story finish or a completion pass. Lost in Random is not an open-ended loot game; preparation matters more than grinding at the end.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not stand still while aiming - strafe first, shoot crystals second, and let Dicey collect safely.

  2. Do not treat the slingshot as your main damage plan - use it to feed cards and control the fight.

  3. Do not fill the deck with expensive cards - low rolls need cheap plays that still help.

  4. Do not ignore duplicate cards - extra copies can make your most useful answers appear more often.

  5. Do not leave pinned cards unused forever - a saved card has value only when it changes a fight.

  6. Do not spend every token on attacks in board battles - watch the board objective as carefully as enemy health.

  7. Do not buy cards without checking your deck gaps - choose shop upgrades that fix real problems.

  8. Do not save every coin for later - card variety and Golden Pins make the middle chapters smoother.

  9. Do not dodge only backward - side movement and Blink Dodge can open crystal angles.

  10. Do not rush past puzzles and Dice Doors - they often support pages, coins, or shop progress.
