Manhunt is Rockstar North’s stealth-based survival-horror game published by Rockstar Games. This guide uses the spaced title Manhunt while the URL slug remains man-hunt.
Content warning: Manhunt is a mature stealth horror/action game with source-listed Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language. This guide keeps the discussion non-graphic and focused on stealth systems, objectives, and survival habits.
This is a beginner fundamentals guide. It is not a full Scene walkthrough, all-ratings route, bonus-Scene unlock guide, trophy guide, modern-PC fix guide, or detailed weapon list.
Essential Tips
1. Let Shadows Do the First Job
A hidden position is your safest planning screen.
Before crossing an open area, find the nearest shadow, doorway, or corner you can return to. Manhunt is much easier when you make a move from cover, then fall back before the whole area reacts.
2. Move Quietly Until You Want Attention
Noise is a tool, not background flavor.
Sneaking is silent, while running and certain surfaces can alert hunters. Sprint when you are escaping or crossing a known gap, but slow down when you are close to an enemy, setting a lure, or passing through a tight patrol route.
3. Pull One Hunter Away From the Group
Most bad fights start because two problems became one.
Use a thrown item, wall knock, kicked object, or other noise to draw one hunter toward a controlled spot. If more than one responds, stay hidden and wait for the group to split instead of rushing into a messy fight.
4. Make Noise, Then Move
Hunters investigate where the sound came from.
After creating a lure, do not stand exactly on the sound source unless you are already safely positioned. Move into nearby shadow or around a blind corner, then let the hunter look the wrong way before you act.
5. Read the Radar Before You Step Out
Awareness color tells you how much risk you are taking.
On radar-enabled difficulty, yellow means idle, orange means suspicious, and red means aware. Use the arrow direction to see where a hunter is facing. In Hardcore mode, where radar is unavailable, wait longer and use patrol movement and audio cues instead.
6. Respect Noisy Ground
A good hiding spot can be ruined by a loud approach.
Do not creep across gravel or other noisy surfaces just because the target is facing away. Reroute, wait for more distance, or use a lure to turn the hunter before crossing.
7. Check Scene Objectives in the Pause Menu
Survival is not always the only requirement.
Manhunt’s missions are Scenes, and objectives can include more than reaching an exit. If you are unsure why a route is not ending, pause and check the current objective before wandering into extra danger.
8. Treat Save Tapes as Checkpoint Lines
A Save Tape locks in your current condition.
When you pass a Save Tape, dying returns you to that checkpoint with the weapons and health state you had at the time. If you reached it in bad shape, stabilize your route after the checkpoint rather than assuming the game will reset you cleanly.
9. Save From the Pause Menu Too
Checkpoint progress and saved game progress are separate.
Save Tapes help inside a Scene, but saved-game progress uses the pause menu Save option. After clearing a Scene or reaching a good stopping point, use the menu before quitting.
10. Keep a Lure Option When You Can
A loud object can be more valuable than another attack tool.
Yellow-class items exist to make noise and draw hunters. If you are carrying something throwable, think of it as a positioning tool first. A clean lure can solve an enemy placement that a direct approach cannot.
11. Match Weapons to the Problem
The weapon categories tell you what tradeoff you are making.
Green tools are quiet but limited, Blue tools are reusable and noisier, Red tools are stronger but slower, and firearms are loud enough to change the whole area. Pick based on stealth, space, and escape route instead of raw force.
12. Separate First Clears From Rating Runs
Learn the Scene before chasing style or speed.
After a clear, the game shows a rating screen. Do not make your first pass harder by optimizing every encounter. First learn where shadows, lures, Save Tapes, painkillers, locked routes, and objective triggers are; then return for cleaner ratings.
Stealth Priority Checklist
| Situation | First Move | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Entering a new area | Find shadow, corner, or retreat path | Gives you a reset point if a hunter reacts |
| Seeing two hunters together | Lure one away and wait | Prevents a small mistake from becoming a group fight |
| Radar turns orange | Freeze or retreat into cover | Suspicion can still cool down if you stop feeding it |
| Radar turns red | Break line of sight and hide farther away | Nearby shadows may not save you once pursuit has started |
| You need an objective | Check the pause menu | Stops unnecessary roaming |
| You pass a Save Tape | Note health and weapon state | The checkpoint preserves your current condition |
| You find painkillers | Use them when health loss is meaningful | Avoids wasting the recovery item |
| You pick up a firearm | Plan for noise before firing | Gunfire can pull more hunters into the area |
Noise and Awareness Habits
- Use quiet movement first - Sneak while close to hunters and save sprinting for escapes or known routes.
- Throw short when setting a lure - A nearby sound can turn a hunter without forcing you to chase too far.
- Leave the sound source - Hunters investigate the noise, so reposition before they arrive.
- Watch facing direction - A hunter walking away is safer than one merely standing still.
- Do not trust shadows during active pursuit - If a hunter is fully aware, create distance and break sight first.
- Use corners as information tools - Peeking keeps you from stepping into a watched angle.
- Avoid noisy surfaces during close approaches - Foot noise can expose an otherwise clean route.
- Let failed lures reset - If the wrong hunter responds, stay hidden and try again after patrols settle.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not sprint everywhere - Running creates avoidable noise and drains stamina.
-
Do not lure from the exact spot where you plan to hide - Move after making noise so the hunter checks the wrong place.
-
Do not attack the first hunter you see without checking the second one - Nearby witnesses can collapse the route.
-
Do not ignore the radar color - Orange and red states need different responses.
-
Do not cross loud surfaces during a close approach - Wait, reroute, or lure first.
-
Do not fire a gun just because you found one - Loud shots can draw more pressure than you can handle.
-
Do not waste painkillers at light damage - Use them when the recovery matters.
-
Do not quit after a checkpoint without saving from the menu - Save Tape progress and saved game progress are not the same thing.
-
Do not chase rating optimization on a blind first clear - Learn the Scene layout and objectives first.
-
Do not assume every Scene only needs an exit - Check objectives when the path forward is unclear.
