Mass Effect 2: Zaeed – The Price of Revenge is a Mass Effect 2 DLC pack centered on recruiting Zaeed Massani and completing his loyalty mission on Zorya. It is not a standalone game, not the full Mass Effect 2 campaign, and not a guide for Kasumi, Overlord, Firewalker, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrival, or Normandy Crash Site.
Content warning: This add-on depends on Mass Effect 2, which carries a Mature rating for the base game. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on combat preparation, mission timing, and route consequences.
This is marked intermediate because it assumes you already understand Mass Effect 2’s squad, loyalty, cover, weapon, and Paragon/Renegade systems. New players can still use it, but treat it as DLC-specific planning rather than a basic combat tutorial.
Essential Tips
1. Confirm You Are Playing the Zaeed DLC
This pack adds Zaeed, The Veteran, The Price of Revenge, Zorya, and DLC-specific rewards.
Keep the scope tight. This is the Zaeed pack, built around his recruitment and loyalty mission. Legendary Edition includes broad Mass Effect trilogy DLC content, but that does not turn this into a guide for every Mass Effect 2 add-on.
2. Recruit Zaeed Before Looking for Zorya
The loyalty mission opens after Zaeed joins the squad.
Zaeed is tied to the Omega Merchant District recruitment flow. Once he is part of the party, the DLC opens the Faia System in the Ismar Frontier and lets you land on Zorya for The Price of Revenge.
3. You Do Not Need to Wait for Horizon
This loyalty mission has an earlier unlock rule than most squadmate loyalty missions.
Most Mass Effect 2 loyalty missions sit behind main-story progress, but Zaeed’s mission is an exception. You can start it after recruiting him. The practical question is not whether the mission is available, but whether your Shepard is ready for the route choice you want.
4. Bring a Real Shield Answer
Blue Suns enemies lean into shielded firefights.
Do not build the squad as if this is only a story detour. Overload, Disruptor Ammo, strong weapon pressure, or another reliable shield plan makes the Zorya fights cleaner, especially when enemies settle into medium and long sightlines.
5. Use Zaeed as Ranged Pressure
He is useful, but he does not solve every combat problem alone.
Zaeed brings assault rifle and sniper rifle value, with Concussive Shot and Disruptor Ammo in his kit. Once the mission starts, treating him as a long-range damage squadmate fits the encounter layout better than asking him to cover every defensive layer.
6. Pick the Third Squadmate for Your Shepard
The third slot should patch your class’s weakness.
If Shepard lacks shield stripping, bring tech help. If Shepard handles shields but struggles with armor or mechs, bring someone who gives safer burst damage or control. The mission includes Blue Suns, Pyros, FENRIS mechs, Heavies, and a YMIR mech, so narrow teams can feel brittle.
7. Save Before the Major Route Split
The worker-rescue route and the Vido-pursuit route do not play the same.
The mission’s central choice affects loyalty, tone, and rewards. Make a manual save before committing, especially if you want to save the facility workers and still earn Zaeed’s loyalty.
8. Delay the Mission If You Need a Persuasion Cushion
The rescue-and-loyalty outcome is the route most likely to punish an underbuilt Shepard.
If you are playing a Paragon Shepard and want both the worker-rescue result and Zaeed loyal, consider doing the mission when your persuasion position is stronger. If you only care about securing loyalty as directly as possible, the Vido-focused route is simpler.
9. Watch Route-Specific Rewards
The DLC’s upgrade rewards are not identical across outcomes.
The Zorya rewards include the M-451 Firestorm and route-linked upgrade possibilities. Heavy Weapon Ammo and Assault Rifle Damage are both associated with this DLC, but do not assume one route gives every pickup in the same way.
10. Treat Legendary Edition as Access, Not a Different Mission
The included-content version still needs Mass Effect 2 systems.
In Legendary Edition, Zaeed content is part of the bundled trilogy experience. You still recruit him, travel to the right system, manage the squad, fight through Zorya, and resolve the loyalty choice inside Mass Effect 2’s rules.
Unlocking and Starting the DLC
Use this quick path to keep the DLC straight:
| Step | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Base requirement | Play Mass Effect 2 or Mass Effect 2 inside Legendary Edition |
| Recruitment | Find and recruit Zaeed through the Omega Merchant District flow |
| Mission unlock | Look for The Price of Revenge after Zaeed joins |
| Galaxy map | Travel to Faia in the Ismar Frontier |
| Landing site | Start the mission on Zorya |
| Scope check | Stay focused on Zaeed’s loyalty mission, not other DLC chains |
The mission is short compared with the larger story DLC packs, but it still matters because loyalty affects Zaeed’s combat kit and the broader suicide-mission preparation loop. Do not treat it like a throwaway recruitment scene.
Squad and Loadout Prep
Build around three problems: shields, range, and mechs.
For shields, bring a direct answer. Overload is the cleanest example, but any dependable anti-shield pressure can work if your squad can apply it often. Zaeed’s Disruptor Ammo helps, but on higher difficulty or weaker Shepard builds, one squadmate’s ammo power is not the whole plan.
For range, use cover discipline. Several fights reward staying controlled at the entrance to a space, thinning enemies, and moving only when the next cover position is secure. Zaeed fits this rhythm because assault rifles and sniper rifles let him contribute without charging forward.
For mechs and armored pressure, avoid spending all cooldowns on minor targets. Pyros, FENRIS mechs, Heavies, and the YMIR mech can turn sloppy positioning into a fast medigel check. Keep one heavy weapon or burst-damage option ready for the moments when a larger target pushes through the line.
Route Choice and Loyalty
The Price of Revenge is built around Zaeed’s vendetta against Vido Santiago and the danger to the Eldfell-Ashland refinery workers. The cleanest way to play it is to decide what kind of Shepard you are committing to before the split appears.
If you pursue Vido, the loyalty outcome is straightforward, but the facility cost is severe. If you save the workers, the mission leans into a Paragon outcome, but Zaeed’s loyalty can depend on whether Shepard can bring him back under command afterward.
That makes the manual save important. It is not just a backup for a hard fight; it protects you from committing to a moral route before you know whether your Shepard can support the result you want.
Rewards and Cleanup
Do a slow sweep through Zorya rather than sprinting from objective to objective. The DLC is associated with the M-451 Firestorm heavy weapon, credits, Palladium, experience, route-linked upgrade rewards, and Zaeed’s Inferno Grenade loyalty power.
After the mission, check Zaeed’s loyalty state instead of assuming completion equals loyalty. Also check your upgrade research flow when you return to the Normandy. DLC rewards are easy to mentally blur with base-game research, especially if you play multiple loyalty missions in one sitting.
For achievement or trophy cleanup, the key goal is gaining the mercenary’s loyalty. If that is your main objective, plan the route and persuasion state around loyalty first, then replay or reload for alternate moral outcomes later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not treat the DLC as standalone content - It requires Mass Effect 2 systems, saves, squad management, and progression.
-
Do not look for Zorya before recruiting Zaeed - Recruit him first, then use the galaxy map route to Faia in Ismar Frontier.
-
Do not wait for Horizon because every other loyalty mission trained you to - Zaeed’s loyalty mission can open earlier than the normal pattern.
-
Do not bring a squad with no shield plan - Blue Suns shields make weak tech coverage feel worse than usual.
-
Do not use Zaeed as your only answer to everything - Let him provide ranged pressure while the third squadmate covers your missing tools.
-
Do not rush the route split without a manual save - The worker rescue and Vido pursuit paths affect loyalty and rewards.
-
Do not assume saving everyone automatically earns loyalty - The Paragon route needs Shepard to keep control of Zaeed afterward.
-
Do not mix this mission with other DLC advice - Kasumi, Overlord, Firewalker, Shadow Broker, Arrival, and Normandy Crash Site follow different rules.
