Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Spearhead Beginner Tips - Campaign, Weapons, and Tanks

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Spearhead beginner tips for campaign objectives, saves, weapons, leaning, smoke, stationary guns, tanks, and Tug of War.

On this page

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Spearhead is the 2002 expansion for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. The original expansion requires the full base game, while War Chest-style bundles package Allied Assault, Spearhead, and Breakthrough together. This guide is only for Spearhead: Sgt. Jack Barnes, the Normandy drop, the Ardennes/Bastogne fighting, Berlin, Spearhead weapons, tanks, stationary guns, and Tug of War-era multiplayer.

Content note: Spearhead is rated Teen with Violence. This guide keeps war-combat discussion non-graphic and focused on player decisions.

This is a beginner guide, but the game itself is an older PC shooter expansion that can punish careless saves, exposed movement, and weak ammo habits. It is not a full walkthrough, Breakthrough guide, base Allied Assault guide, War Chest launcher guide, fan-patch guide, modern compatibility guide, or current multiplayer setup guide.

Essential Tips

1. Start With the Expansion Mindset

Spearhead is shorter and sharper than a full base campaign.

You move through three broad campaign arcs instead of the base game’s full Allied Assault route: Operation Overlord, the Ardennes Forest, and Road to Berlin. Expect frequent set pieces, squad movement, heavy weapons, and mission-specific tools. Do not import Breakthrough’s North Africa, Sicily, or Italy expectations, and do not chase base-game mission memories when Spearhead is asking for its own objective.

2. Confirm You Are Actually Launching Spearhead

War Chest menus and old installs can blur the package.

Before using this guide, make sure the active campaign is Spearhead, not Allied Assault or Breakthrough. The Spearhead path follows Jack Barnes through Normandy, Bastogne, and Berlin. If you are seeing Lt. Mike Powell’s base campaign or John Baker’s Breakthrough campaign, you are in the wrong title.

3. Use Quick Saves Like Part of the Loadout

This expansion expects old PC shooter discipline.

Save before exposed pushes, vehicle sections, bridge fights, anti-air work, and building entries. Save again after a hard objective settles. Avoid saving while low on health, surrounded, or stuck in a bad angle, because a bad save can turn one mistake into repeated failure.

4. Let Objectives Beat Curiosity

Spearhead’s fights are tied to tasks, not just enemy cleanup.

When the game gives you a squad order, demolition job, defensive stand, bridge task, or vehicle section, solve that job first. Clearing every visible soldier before checking the objective can waste health and ammo, especially when the mission wants you to move, man a gun, destroy a target, or regroup with allies.

5. Lean Before You Commit

Spearhead adds more ways to check dangerous angles.

Use leaning to inspect corners, windows, bunkers, and street approaches before stepping into the lane. Leaning is not invincibility, but it gives you a better first read than walking upright into machine-gun fire or a room full of enemies.

6. Treat Melee as a Utility, Not a Plan

The added melee option helps only when the risk is low.

Use melee for close, safe cleanup or when a non-sniper, non-antitank weapon is already out and the situation is controlled. Do not build a fight plan around melee. Spearhead is still a gunfight-heavy expansion, and open areas punish players who try to close distance without cover.

7. Pair Weapons by Range and Role

Carry tools that answer different problems.

British and Soviet additions give Spearhead a different feel from base Allied Assault. A rifle helps with measured shots, an SMG handles close rooms and streets, grenades break cover, and heavy or mounted tools solve hard targets. If two weapons solve the same range, swap one when the mission offers a better complement.

8. Save Smoke for Movement Pressure

Smoke is a tool for crossing and objective work.

Do not throw smoke just because it is available. Use it when open movement, a defensive push, or a multiplayer objective needs concealment. In single-player, keep your follow-up clear: smoke helps you reposition, but it does not finish enemies for you.

9. Use Heavy Weapons When the Encounter Points at Them

Flak, mortars, autocannons, and antitank tools are not decorations.

When the mission puts you near a big gun or gives you an obvious hard target, stop trying to solve it with ordinary rifle fire. Look for the provided weapon, use it for the job, then move once the objective is done or the angle becomes unsafe.

10. Watch Tank Health Separately

A tank is not the same health pool as the soldier.

Player-controlled tanks can switch between the main cannon and a machine gun, and the expansion includes tank health pickups. Use the cannon for armor or hard targets, use the machine gun for infantry pressure, and avoid treating tank sections as permission to absorb every shot.

Campaign Priorities

SituationFirst MoveWhy It Helps
New campaign arc beginsCheck the objective and squad directionSpearhead changes allies, weapons, and setting quickly
Normandy drop or scattered startRegroup carefully and read the routeRushing alone wastes health before the mission opens up
Village or building fightLean, choose a close-range weapon, then enterDoorways and windows punish blind movement
Defensive standPick cover and reload before the wave peaksOld set pieces rarely wait for you to reorganize
Bridge or demolition taskPrioritize the objective item or weaponThe task matters more than clearing every distant target
Berlin armor sectionSwap between cannon and machine gun by targetTanks need target discipline just like infantry weapons
Objective completedReload, check health, and saveThe next push may start immediately

Weapons and Tools

Tool TypeBeginner UseWatch Out For
RiflesCareful mid-range shots and safer openingsSlow handling if enemies rush close
SMGsRooms, streets, and close pushesAmmo drain if you hold the trigger too long
Scoped riflesLong lanes and priority targetsBad choice when enemies are already inside
Smoke grenadesMovement, crossing, and objective pressureThrowing smoke without a plan just hides your own view
Rifle grenadeMultiplayer burst or hard-position pressureLoading and firing takes commitment
Antitank weaponsArmor and hard targetsKeep distance and avoid wasting shots on infantry
MeleeLow-risk close cleanupNot a substitute for cover or ammo discipline

Spearhead’s weapon variety is strongest when you think by job. The Sten and PPSh feel more useful when the fight gets tight. Rifles such as the Lee-Enfield, Mosin-Nagant, G 43, and SVT-40 fit longer lanes. German weapons and mounted MGs still matter, but the expansion’s British and Soviet kit is part of its identity, so use what the campaign gives you instead of forcing one favorite weapon through every section.

Stationary Weapons, Tanks, and Multiplayer

Stationary weapons are objective tools. Flak guns, mortars, autocannons, and mounted machine guns can erase a problem quickly, but they also lock your position and narrow your view. Get on them when the mission calls for it, scan the expected lane, and step away when the target is gone or incoming fire makes the position too risky.

Tanks need the same rhythm. Use the main cannon when the target is armored, fortified, or clustered around a hard point. Use the machine gun when infantry is the immediate threat. If you spot a tank health pickup, save it for real damage, not as a reason to drive carelessly.

Historical Spearhead multiplayer includes standard deathmatch/team-style play and Tug of War. For a beginner, the safe advice is simple: learn the map lane, pick a weapon for the distance, use smoke for coordinated movement, and play the objective instead of chasing isolated kills. Current online availability depends on the package and setup, so treat multiplayer here as mode awareness rather than a live-service promise.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Launch the wrong campaign - Check that you are in Spearhead before following Jack Barnes, Normandy, Ardennes, or Berlin advice.

  2. Save while trapped - Stabilize behind cover before quicksaving so you do not preserve a failing position.

  3. Ignore the objective text - Spearhead often wants a weapon, bridge, squad move, or defensive task rather than another hallway sweep.

  4. Walk upright into windows and corners - Lean first, then enter with the weapon that fits the range.

  5. Spend smoke without moving - Throw smoke only when you are ready to cross, regroup, or pressure an objective.

  6. Fight armor with normal guns - Switch to the tank, antitank weapon, flak, mortar, autocannon, or mission tool the encounter provides.

  7. Stay mounted after the lane is dead - A strong stationary gun becomes a liability once enemies shift angles.

  8. Drive tanks like they are invincible - Swap cannon and machine gun by target, watch tank health, and use pickups deliberately.

  9. Mix in Breakthrough habits - Spearhead is not the North Africa, Sicily, or Italy expansion, so keep those missions and weapons separate.
