Metal Slug 2 Beginner Tips - Weapons, Slugs, POWs, and Missions

Beginner Metal Slug 2 tips for weapons, Slug vehicles, POW rescues, transformations, missions, co-op, scoring, and Metal Slug X version differences.

On this page

Metal Slug 2 is SNK’s 1998 arcade run-and-gun sequel, built around six missions, constant movement, rescueable POWs, limited-ammo weapons, and rideable Slug vehicles. This guide covers beginner habits for Metal Slug 2 itself, not the remixed Metal Slug X route.

Content note: ESRB rates ACA NEOGEO METAL SLUG 2 T for Teen with Violence and Blood. This guide keeps combat descriptions non-graphic and focused on play decisions.

This guide is for broad arcade/MVS-style Metal Slug 2 fundamentals on original and modern releases. It is not a full POW checklist, exact score route, no-death walkthrough, boss health chart, or Metal Slug X guide.

Essential Tips

1. Keep Moving, but Stop Rushing

Metal Slug 2 punishes both panic and hesitation.

Move forward with short checks: clear the soldier in front, watch the upper lane, then advance. Swordsmen, snipers, mortars, tanks, bats, mummies, and aircraft all ask for slightly different spacing, so do not hold right just because the screen scrolls that way.

2. Rescue POWs Safely

A rescue only pays off if you survive the mission.

POWs can hand over weapons, ammo, food, Armor Piercers, or helper moments, and rescued POWs are a major scoring reward. POW credit is tied to the current life and mission, so do not spend a life grabbing a risky captive before clearing the enemy or projectile covering them.

3. Use the Weapon You Have, Not the Weapon You Want

Every special weapon has a job.

Heavy Machine Gun is comfortable against spread-out enemies, Shotgun deletes packed threats at close range, rockets and bombs help against vehicles, Laser is useful when targets line up, Fire Bombs help in mummy-heavy sections, and Armor Piercing shells are valuable for Metal Slug vehicle fights. Avoid grabbing a new weapon automatically if your current one fits the room better.

4. Spend Bombs on Real Problems

Bombs are not just panic buttons.

Use bombs on boss openings, armored vehicles, clustered soldiers, protected mortar positions, and moments where standing still to shoot would get you trapped. In several boss fights, keeping a bomb stock makes the difference between a clean phase and a messy one.

5. Treat Slugs as Tools, Not Extra Lives

Vehicles are strong, but they need positioning.

The Camel Slug gives you a Vulcan in the desert, but its rider is still exposed. The Slugnoid jumps high and shoots downward in the tower chase. The Slug Flyer changes Mission 3 into an air battle. The standard Metal Slug brings Vulcan fire, cannon shells, and better boss pressure, but careless jumps or point-blank vehicle contact still cost runs.

6. Learn the Mummy State Before It Happens

Mission 2 can change your controls under pressure.

Mummy attacks and purple effects can mummify you, slowing movement and stripping special weapons until an antidote restores you. When mummified, do not keep playing like normal; crouch, keep distance, and look for the cure instead of forcing risky jumps.

7. Use the Fat State Deliberately

More food can mean stronger attacks and slower movement.

The food-heavy Mission 4 route can trigger Metal Slug 2’s fat transformation. Your attacks change and hit harder, but your walking speed drops. Use the extra firepower while you have space, then respect jumps, vehicles, and projectile gaps more than usual.

8. Watch What Can Still Shoot

Destroying the operator is not always enough.

GameFAQs notes that some vehicles or stage threats can keep firing after the visible operator is gone. Keep shooting until the machine explodes, and do not run forward under the assumption that an unmanned-looking threat is harmless.

9. Use Mission Mode for Practice Where Available

Modern ports can make focused training easier.

Steam and the App Store listing describe Mission Mode as a way to replay unlocked or cleared stages. Use it to practice Mission 2 mummies, Mission 3 Slug Flyer handling, Mission 5 subway pressure, or final-mission aliens without restarting the whole arcade run.

10. Do Not Copy Metal Slug X Advice Blindly

X is a remix, not a duplicate.

Metal Slug X changes enemy placement, weapon availability, vehicle locations, boss placement, stage presentation, and slowdown behavior. A weapon or hidden item that appears in X may not be in Metal Slug 2, so keep route notes separated.

Version Notes

ContextWhat Matters
Original arcade / MVS-style Metal Slug 2Main guide scope: six missions, Marco/Tarma/Eri/Fio, POW rescues, Slug vehicles, transformations, and original mission flow
SteamLists Arcade Mode from Missions 1-6 plus Mission Mode, settings, and leaderboards; developer/publisher metadata is for the Steam release
ACA NEOGEOArcade Archives says it is based on the main MVS arcade version and supports 1-2 players, settings, display options, and rankings
iOS mobile listingAdds mobile-specific controls, autofire/custom layout, Wi-Fi co-op, achievements, and Game Center features
Metal Slug XRemixed/revised version with less slowdown and changed enemy, weapon, vehicle, boss, and item placement; do not use it as the basis for Metal Slug 2 route choices

Weapons and Slugs

ToolBeginner Habit
PistolKeep firing while repositioning; it is weak but always available
Heavy Machine GunSweep spread-out soldiers and airborne threats without standing still too long
ShotgunSave close-range blasts for dense enemies, mummies, and short dangerous corridors
Rocket LauncherUse against vehicles or enemies where the slight tracking and blast help more than straight bullets
Flame Shot / Fire BombUse fire tools in mummy-heavy Mission 2 rooms and packed close-range threats
LaserLine up enemies, mutants, trains, or aliens when the stage gives you a straight shot
Armor PiercerValue it during Metal Slug sections because straight, stronger cannon shots help against vehicles and bosses
Camel SlugEnjoy the Vulcan, but remember the rider can still be hit
SlugnoidPractice high jumps and downward fire before Aeshi Nero fills the tower with pressure
Slug FlyerStay aware of missile angles and landing/ejection behavior during the train mission
Metal SlugUse Vulcan fire for steady pressure, cannon shells for heavy targets, and ejection only when the vehicle is about to fail or a route demands it

Mission Habits

Mission 1

Clear swordsmen before they reach melee range, rescue POWs before collapsing into the next fight, and use the Camel Slug without forgetting that your character is exposed. If a red chopper leads a formation, focus it first because guides describe the squadron falling with the leader.

Mission 2

Respect mummies, bats, purple effects, and the tower climb. Use Shotgun, fire weapons, and antidotes intelligently, and spend a few attempts learning Slugnoid movement before expecting a clean Aeshi Nero fight.

Mission 3

On the supply train, crouch and reposition around snipers, mortars, tanks, and hydrofoils. Once you reach the Slug Flyer, think vertically: line up missiles, avoid sitting under the boss body, and watch for crush/fire patterns.

Mission 4

Food can push you into the fat state, so use the damage boost while leaving enough room for slower movement. In the Metal Slug section, Armor Piercing shells and steady Vulcan pressure are the cleanest answers to clustered vehicles and Big Shiee.

Mission 5

The city and subway raise the pressure. Use special weapons before trains push you into the screen edge, clear mutants before working levers, and keep enough room to back away from enemies that crawl along walls or ceilings.

Final Mission

The final route mixes snipers, rockets, Mars People, UFOs, and the mothership. Use POW weapon drops, keep distance from aliens after they land, and take advantage of Rebel Army support in the last battle instead of trying to handle every target alone.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not treat Metal Slug X as the same game - X has different weapon, vehicle, enemy, boss, and slowdown behavior.

  2. Do not grab every weapon immediately - A new drop can replace a better weapon for the current room.

  3. Do not chase POWs through active fire - Clear the threat first so the rescue survives long enough to matter.

  4. Do not waste bombs on single safe soldiers - Save them for vehicles, boss openings, clustered enemies, and protected threats.

  5. Do not forget the Camel Slug rider is vulnerable - The camel helps your offense, but it does not make you untouchable.

  6. Do not ignore antidotes in Mission 2 - Mummy movement is slow enough that forcing platforming without a cure can snowball into another death.

  7. Do not stand under or inside boss bodies - Several large machines punish careless positioning with crushes, exhaust, beams, or close-range weapons.

  8. Do not stop firing at vehicles too early - Some machines remain dangerous until fully destroyed.

  9. Do not hoard special weapons through Mission 5 trains - Subway pressure is exactly where strong weapons should be spent.

  10. Do not assume port features are universal - Mission Mode, autofire, rankings, display options, and co-op behavior depend on the release.
