Metal Slug 6 Beginner Tips - Arcade Action Guide

Beginner Metal Slug 6 tips for Easy and Hard mode, Weapon Stock, Rush Blaster scoring, characters, Slugs, weapons, and co-op survival.

On this page

Metal Slug 6 is a 2006 SNK Playmore run-and-gun built for Atomiswave arcade hardware, with later access through PlayStation 2, Metal Slug Anthology, PlayStation Store releases, and PC collection contexts. This guide covers Metal Slug 6 itself, not Metal Slug 5, Metal Slug 7, Metal Slug XX, or a general Metal Slug Anthology menu guide.

This is a beginner guide for surviving the full arcade-style run. Metal Slug 6 is friendly to practice because Easy mode gives strong firepower, but the complete game still expects harder arcade habits: short movement, clean weapon use, and fast reactions.

Content warning: Metal Slug 6 is represented in Teen-rated Anthology releases with Blood, Crude Humor, and Violence. This guide keeps combat language non-graphic and focused on play decisions.

Essential Tips

1. Choose Hard Mode for the Full Run

Easy mode is useful practice, but it does not take you through the whole game. Use it to learn basic screen pressure, weapon switching, and character feel. When you want the full Metal Slug 6 route, move to Hard mode and expect tighter ammo, more dangerous enemy patterns, and a standard pistol start.

2. Pick a Character for a Job

Metal Slug 6 gives each character a real role. Marco is straightforward and reliable because his default weapon hits harder. Tarma is best when you want stronger vehicle play. Fio is comfortable for learning because she starts with extra weapon power. Eri rewards grenade control. Ralf is forgiving because he can survive many hits once, but his reduced supplies demand close-range confidence. Clark is strongest when you can safely grab enemies and chain throws.

3. Keep One General Weapon and One Problem Solver

Weapon Stock lets you carry two gun power-ups, so stop treating every pickup as a forced replacement. Keep a steady weapon for normal soldiers and small enemies, then save the second slot for armored targets, awkward angles, or crowded screens. Switch deliberately before the screen gets busy.

4. Use the Pistol to Save Special Ammo

Hard mode cuts special weapon supply, and deaths erase stored weapons. If only a few enemies are on screen, clear them with your default weapon instead of burning valuable shots. Marco gets the most value from this habit, but every character benefits from arriving at bosses with real ammunition left.

5. Treat Rush Blaster as a Reward, Not a Command

The Rush Blaster meter rewards fast kills and can turn Max pressure into coin drops. That does not mean you should sprint blindly. Build the meter when the screen is already under control, then back off if enemy fire, vehicles, or vertical threats start compressing your space.

6. Learn the Extra Actions Early

Metal Slug 6 adds more buttons and commands than older entries. Practice switching weapons, discarding or sharing weapons, alternate melee, Slug dismounting, and Slug grenade use before you need them under boss pressure. These tools are easy to forget if you only play like Metal Slug 3.

7. Spend Grenades Before You Are Cornered

Grenades are not trophies. Use them on tanks, boss weak points, dense enemy waves, and moments where a quick burst prevents a death. Eri makes this especially strong because her grenade supply and throw control are central to her role.

8. Use Zantetsu Sword at the Right Distance

Zantetsu Sword is powerful, but it is a close-range answer. Use it when the pattern gives you safe access or when it can cut through dangerous pressure. Do not force it against enemies that can punish your approach before the swing matters.

9. Dismount Slugs on Purpose

Slugs are firepower, protection, and positioning tools, but they are not permission to stop dodging. Learn when to exit, when to fire the cannon, and when to use the ride only long enough to clear a specific obstacle. Tarma gains more from vehicles than the rest of the cast, so he should be especially deliberate about preserving them.

10. Plan Co-op Supplies Before the Fight

Two players can share the screen beautifully or ruin each other’s spacing. Decide who needs weapons, who takes grenades, and who covers which lane. If one player is Fio, feed her weapon advantage. If one player is Eri, leave grenade crates for her when possible. If one player is Clark, give him room to work near organic enemies without blocking the other player’s shots.

Character Roles

Marco is the clean beginner pick because his stronger default weapon makes ammo conservation easier. He works well when you want to learn enemy timing without juggling a specialized plan.

Tarma shines in Slugs. Pick him if you want vehicle sections to carry more of the run, then make sure you actually preserve those vehicles instead of trading hits casually.

Fio is comfortable for new players because extra weapon supply smooths out mistakes. She is a strong first pick for learning Hard mode, especially if you often run dry before bosses.

Eri is the explosive option. Directional grenade control lets her solve armored targets and awkward angles quickly, but she depends on players remembering to spend grenades instead of hoarding them.

Ralf and Clark reward bolder play. Ralf’s durability and Vulcan Punch help at close range, but reduced supplies mean sloppy shooting hurts. Clark can score and survive through throws, but only when the enemy type and spacing actually let him grab safely.

Weapon Stock and Scoring

Weapon Stock changes the normal Metal Slug pickup rhythm. If your active weapon is useful, switch away before collecting a new one so the pickup lands in the slot you can afford to replace. When both slots are valuable, ignore bad pickups unless the screen gives you time to manage them.

For scoring, the safest beginner habit is to build Rush Blaster in small waves. Clear clustered enemies quickly, collect safe coins, then reset your movement. Max is exciting, but a lost life costs more than a rushed coin trail.

The slide from Metal Slug 5 is gone, so do not plan escapes around it. Your real escape tools are early jumps, short forward movement, Slug dismount timing, weapon switching, grenades, and knowing when to stop advancing.

Slugs and Co-op

Slugs solve specific problems: heavy fire, boss damage, flight sections, digging sections, and route set pieces. Use the cannon when burst damage matters, but keep enough awareness to exit before the ride becomes a trap.

In co-op, separate responsibilities. One player watches the forward lane while the other handles high, rear, or close threats. Do not stand on top of each other unless a platform or boss pattern forces it. When both players dodge as one clump, a single pattern can take both lives.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Starting on Easy and expecting the full ending - use Easy for practice, then move to Hard for the complete run.

  2. Picking a character without using their role - Tarma should protect Slugs, Eri should spend grenades, and Fio should manage weapon supply.

  3. Replacing both stored weapons carelessly - keep one reliable weapon and one situational answer.

  4. Burning special ammo on lone enemies - save limited shots for crowds, armor, and bosses.

  5. Chasing Rush Blaster through unsafe screens - build score only when movement space is stable.

  6. Forgetting weapon switch under pressure - practice switching before bosses and vehicle waves.

  7. Hoarding grenades until death - spend them before the screen traps you.

  8. Forcing Zantetsu Sword from too far away - use it when the approach is safe.

  9. Sitting in damaged Slugs too long - dismount before the ride turns into a lost life.

  10. Crowding your co-op partner - split lanes and share pickups intentionally.
