Metal Slug 7 Beginner Tips - DS Run-and-Gun Guide

Metal Slug 7 beginner tips for difficulty, characters, DS map use, weapons, bombs, POW rescues, Slugs, bosses, and Combat School practice.

On this page

Metal Slug 7 brings the series’ fast 2D shooting to Nintendo DS with seven missions, six commandos, a touch-screen map, character-specific strengths, Weapon Stock, prisoner tracking, Slugs, and Combat School challenges. It is still classic Metal Slug at the center: move, jump, shoot, throw bombs, grab weapons, rescue prisoners, ride vehicles, and survive boss pressure.

The game is rated Teen with blood and violence descriptors. This guide keeps the advice non-graphic and focused on movement, survival, route reading, and practice habits.

Do not treat this like a slow platformer. The screen changes quickly, but most beginner deaths come from adding too many threats at once. Learn to clear space, use the DS map, choose a character that supports your style, and spend bombs before panic takes over.

Essential Tips

1. Start On The Right Difficulty

Beginner, Normal, and Hard are not just labels. Beginner gives more room to learn because characters start with stronger default fire and more credits. Normal is closer to the older arcade feel, while Hard raises pressure with tougher and faster enemies plus fewer credits.

Use Beginner if you are learning the missions, prisoner spots, and boss shapes. Move to Normal once you can finish areas without burning continues from surprise tanks, helicopters, and falling hazards. Save Hard for when you already know where attacks enter the screen.

2. Pick A Character For Your Weakness

Metal Slug 7 keeps the six-character style from Metal Slug 6. Marco favors stronger basic shooting, Tarma is the vehicle specialist, Fio is comfortable for weapon supply, Eri is great when you rely on bombs, Ralf is sturdy and melee-focused, and Clark has strong grab-based scoring potential.

For a first clear, choose the character who fixes your biggest problem. If you run out of weapon ammo, try Fio. If boss bombs carry you, try Eri. If vehicles feel like your best safe space, try Tarma. Do not pick a technical character for score before you can survive the mission.

3. Use The Bottom Screen As A Warning Tool

The action stays on the top screen, but the bottom map helps you understand level shape, power-up positions, and prisoner locations. It is not a magic answer, and staring at it during live fire will get you hit, but quick glances can stop you from missing important pickups.

Use the map between waves, after clearing a platform, or before committing to a jump. If the map suggests something above or behind you, stabilize the screen first, then check the spot.

4. Advance In Short Clears

Metal Slug punishes blind scrolling. Walk forward until a wave appears, clear soldiers and vehicles, check high and low lanes, then move again. If you hold right while tanks, parachute troops, helicopters, and artillery are still active, the next wave joins the current one.

Short clears also help with hidden prisoners. Many rescue opportunities ask you to shoot a wall, floor, tower, or overhead space. You will not notice those cues if you are already dragging the screen into the next fight.

5. Treat Weapon Stock As A Plan

Weapon Stock lets you carry more than the basic pistol cycle, so think before swapping. A homing or piercing weapon may solve awkward angles, while Heavy Machine Gun-style fire is reliable for general pressure. Grenades and limited special ammo should answer hard targets, not random soldiers.

Before picking up a new weapon, ask what the next screen needs. Keep the tool that solves vehicles, air targets, or tight corridors. A new icon is not automatically an upgrade if it leaves you worse against the current boss.

6. Spend Bombs Before The Screen Locks You Down

Bombs are not souvenirs. Use them when a tank blocks movement, a boss weak point is open, enemies flood both sides, or a vehicle wave is about to pin you. A bomb spent early can preserve a life, a weapon stock, and a useful Slug.

If you die with several bombs unused, the mistake happened before the hit. Build a habit of throwing one as soon as the screen becomes expensive to recover.

7. Rescue POWs After Clearing The Immediate Threat

POWs matter because they can give items, weapons, bombs, and completion goals. Some are obvious, while others require shooting specific spaces or approaching from the right height. The trap is chasing a rescue while bullets and vehicles are still active.

Clear the closest threat first, then rescue. If a hidden prisoner takes repeated shots into a wall or floor, make sure you are not standing where the next wave can run you over. Prisoner routing is a reward for control, not a replacement for it.

8. Respect Every Slug

Slugs give firepower, mobility, and survivability, but each vehicle has its own risk. The series staples return, and Metal Slug 7 adds machines such as Slug Truck, Slug Gigant, and Slug Armor. A vehicle can make a section easier, but only if you still dodge and watch its position.

Use Tarma if you want to learn vehicle sections with more forgiveness. With any character, get comfortable exiting before a vehicle becomes a trap. Losing a Slug is sometimes better than losing the life with it.

9. Aim For Boss Weak Points

Bosses often look like one giant target, but many patterns reward attacking a specific part while dodging missiles, rushes, crushes, or support enemies. If a section seems to take no damage, reposition and test another visible weak point rather than standing still and firing.

Keep enough distance to react. Jump over rushes, clear small projectiles when they crowd your lane, and focus on one vulnerable part at a time. Boss fights become much calmer when you stop spraying every surface equally.

10. Use Combat School As Focused Practice

Combat School breaks skills into smaller tasks: target elimination, POW rescue, item collection, base assault, obstacle survival, and special training. These are not just side activities. They teach the exact habits the main missions demand.

Use them when a mission keeps falling apart. If you miss prisoners, practice POW tasks. If you panic under boss fire, run target elimination. If item routing feels messy, use collection drills. Smaller goals make the main game easier to read.

11. Do Not Expect Co-op

Metal Slug 7 on DS is a single-player entry, so do not plan around a second player covering lanes. That changes how you use bombs and characters. You must handle high targets, ground vehicles, pickups, and boss pressure yourself.

The upside is consistency. Every run has the same player responsibility, and character choice matters more because there is no partner to cover your weak side.

12. Separate Metal Slug 7 From Metal Slug XX

Metal Slug XX is related, but it is not the same guide target. It revises and expands the Metal Slug 7 base on other platforms. Use this advice for the Nintendo DS game first, especially when thinking about the touch-screen map, DS screen space, and single-player structure.

If you move to XX later, recheck character behavior, content, and multiplayer assumptions before copying routes directly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not rush into Hard immediately - Learn enemy entrances, boss shapes, and prisoner routes before cutting your credits down.

  2. Do not pick a character only for score - Survival comfort matters more than advanced scoring on a first clear.

  3. Do not stare at the bottom screen during combat - Glance at the map only when your lane is safe.

  4. Do not scroll while threats remain active - Clear the current wave before pulling in the next one.

  5. Do not replace a useful weapon blindly - Keep the tool that solves the room or boss in front of you.

  6. Do not hoard bombs through tank waves - Spend them before vehicles and soldiers trap your movement.

  7. Do not rescue POWs through active fire - Secure the immediate space, then collect the reward.

  8. Do not sit inside a damaged Slug too long - Exit or reposition before the vehicle turns into a life loss.

  9. Do not shoot bosses without checking weak points - Move and test angles when your fire is not working.

  10. Do not treat Combat School as optional fluff - Use it to practice the skill that is blocking your clear.
