Northgard, developed and published by Shiro Games, is a Viking real-time strategy game about settling a dangerous continent, assigning villagers to jobs, surviving winter, mastering clan bonuses, and winning through conquest, fame, lore, or trade.
Content warning: Store pages list fantasy violence, mild language, use of alcohol, user interaction, and PEGI 12 Violence. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on strategy.
This guide is written for beginner fundamentals across the modern Northgard PC era. Exact clan tier lists, ranked openings, DLC ownership, and console or mobile parity can change by edition, platform, and patch.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Food as Survival First
Food is not just an expansion currency.
Food pays for colonization and feasts, but it also keeps your clan alive. If the food stockpile hits zero, your clan starts starving, happiness drops, and sickness can follow. Before grabbing another tile, ask whether the new zone will help your economy soon or simply raise pressure before winter.
2. Build Around Winter Before It Arrives
Northgard punishes late preparation.
Winter returns every year from December through February. During those months, food production drops, wood consumption rises, and military units fight worse, especially away from home. Enter winter with a real stockpile, enough woodcutters, and fewer risky plans. A good autumn is often quieter than a good summer: finish buildings, bank resources, and avoid starting a war you cannot supply.
3. Scout With a Purpose
Exploration decides what your opening can become.
Your first scouts should reveal nearby food tiles, stone, iron, neutral threats, chokepoints, and enemy direction. Do not scout randomly forever. Find a safe food tile, a path to resources, and the spaces you must clear or defend. Remember that enemy territory exploration needs the right scout-camp upgrade, so plan scouting as infrastructure, not just vision.
4. Expand Only Into Tiles You Can Use
Every colonized zone should solve a problem.
Strong early zones give food, wood access, stone, iron, a defensive position, or a route toward your win condition. Weak expansion consumes food and attention while adding little. If a tile is defended, already taken, or too expensive for your current stockpile, delay it until your army and economy are ready.
5. Convert Workers Carefully
Your army is made from your economy.
Most military units come from regular clan members, cost Krowns, use warband space, and keep eating food and wood while producing nothing. You still need soldiers to clear wolves, defend raids, and threaten enemies, but converting too many workers too early can crash the economy that was supposed to support the army.
6. Choose Lore for the Game You Are Playing
The lore tree is a plan, not a checklist.
Lore unlocks knowledge in production, military, and economy branches, and clans can replace parts of the tree with unique options. Pick the knowledge that fixes your current bottleneck or supports your victory route. Winter protection, cheaper colonization, better production, happiness, military upgrades, and trade tools all matter at different times.
7. Pick a Victory Route Before Midgame
Northgard rewards directed growth.
Domination wants a sustained warband and access to enemy town halls. Fame wants territory, upgraded buildings, resources, and defense. Wisdom wants lore generation and blessings. Trade wants a strong Krowns economy and enough protection to survive attention. If you do a little of everything, another clan can finish a focused route first.
8. Use Healers Before Sickness Spreads
Damaged workers are hidden economic drag.
Build a Healer’s Hut and assign healers when your clan is wounded or sick. Healers are especially important after starvation, combat, events, or attacks. Leaving damaged workers in the economy can make a bad season feel worse than the resource numbers suggest.
9. Upgrade With Stone Intentionally
Upgrades are powerful because stone is limited.
Building upgrades require stone and the right town-hall progress. Spend stone where it supports your chosen plan: food stability, wood security, Krowns income, lore pace, military readiness, or a key clan mechanic. Upgrading a random building because the button is available can delay the improvement you actually need.
10. Keep Platform Differences in Mind
The same title does not always mean the same package.
PC, console, and mobile listings all support the same broad Northgard idea, but online subscriptions, player counts, DLC packaging, controls, and update timing can differ. On PlayStation, online play uses PS Plus. Xbox lists two-to-six-player online co-op and multiplayer. Mobile has its own support path and DLC history. Treat platform-specific advice as edition-specific until you check it in your client.
Economy and Winter Habits
Keep your early economy simple: food tile, wood income, scouting, and enough Krowns to convert units or build key structures. If you build too many structures before villagers can staff them, you spend resources without getting production back. If you colonize too quickly, food disappears before the new tiles repay the cost.
Watch happiness because population growth depends on it. More villagers are useful only when you can feed, warm, house, and assign them productively. A clan that grows into starvation is not ahead. Use territory, food reserves, clan tools, breweries, lore, and events as appropriate, but do not patch every problem with more workers.
Before winter, check food trend, wood trend, wounded units, and military plans. Winter is a good time to defend, recover, scout safely, set up upgrades, and prepare a spring move. It is a bad time to discover that your army cannot fight well outside friendly territory or that your wood stockpile cannot carry the clan.
Feasts are useful bursts, not a substitute for a stable economy. Use them when the extra production helps you hit a timing, recover, or finish a major goal. If a feast only hides a bad food situation for a moment, fix the underlying production first.
Clans, Lore, and Victory Plans
Northgard’s clans are not cosmetic. The first six clans teach broad styles, and later clans or DLC-era additions can change how food, military, lore, trade, scouting, and territory work. Learn your chosen clan’s starting bonuses, fame bonuses, lore replacements, relic, and Conquest bonuses before copying generic advice.
Choose a victory plan that matches your clan and map. A defensive economy can chase Fame or Wisdom, but it still needs soldiers because Domination cannot be ignored entirely. A Trade plan can be fast, but a visible Krowns economy invites attacks. A Domination plan needs food and wood as much as it needs warriors, because soldiers who cannot be supplied do not stay threatening.
Conquest and Bifrost-style PvE modes ask for different habits than a normal skirmish. In challenge chains and co-op modes, read the objective modifiers first. Some bonuses reward a specific clan pattern, while some scenarios punish a normal greedy opening.
Military and Multiplayer Habits
Your first military job is usually clearing and defense, not instantly ending the game. Clear the tiles that unlock food, stone, iron, and safe expansion. Keep enough units to deter attacks, but return to economy when the job is done.
In multiplayer, scouting opponents is as important as scouting resources. You need to know who is booming, who is preparing Fame or Trade, and who has the military to punish you. Ranked and clan balance have received updates, so avoid relying on old timing charts unless they match your current version.
When you attack, bring a goal. Razing a key tile, stopping a victory timer, breaking a trade economy, or forcing a fight before winter can make sense. Wandering into enemy land during bad seasonal timing wastes workers, Krowns, and tempo.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not spend all your food before winter - Colonization is valuable only if your clan can still survive the season.
-
Do not build more jobs than you can staff - Empty buildings and idle assignments delay the economy they were meant to improve.
-
Do not ignore wood consumption - Winter can turn a comfortable wood stockpile into sickness and repairs if you prepare late.
-
Do not convert your whole economy into soldiers - Military units consume resources while removing workers from production.
-
Do not scout without acting on the map - Vision matters because it points you toward food, stone, iron, threats, and victory routes.
-
Do not pick lore randomly - Your knowledge choices should support your clan, season, economy, and win condition.
-
Do not chase every victory condition at once - A focused opponent can finish Fame, Wisdom, Trade, or Domination while you drift.
-
Do not assume every platform has identical content - PC, console, and mobile versions can differ in DLC, online requirements, and update timing.
