Old School RuneScape is Jagex’s official free-to-play fantasy MMORPG based on the 2007-era RuneScape archive, then expanded through years of official updates, player feedback, polling, mobile support, quests, skills, PvP, economy systems, and membership content.
This guide is for official Old School RuneScape on official Jagex-supported services. It is not a RuneScape 3 guide, a RuneScape Classic guide, a private-server guide, a current-patch money maker, a skill-training route, a quest walkthrough, a Leagues task route, a PvP build, or a boss meta guide.
Patch note: As of July 8, 2026, the official news rail included July 7, 2026 Wyrmscraig and Fractured Archive posts, plus the June 30, 2026 Blood Moon Rises game update. Check official news, wiki pages, membership terms, Bonds, Grand Exchange prices, Leagues, skills, quests, client/mobile behavior, and boss balance before making expensive or high-risk plans.
Essential Tips
1. Make Sure You Are Reading OSRS Advice
Old School RuneScape is not RuneScape 3, RuneScape Classic, or a private server.
OSRS has its own official worlds, character progress, combat assumptions, skills, quests, economy, mobile client, and update cadence. If a guide mentions Evolution of Combat, RuneScape 3-only skills, Classic-only quest counts, custom XP rates, or unofficial server rules, treat it as the wrong guide for your official OSRS account.
2. Treat Tutorial Island as a Real Decision Point
It teaches basics and gates account-mode choices.
Tutorial Island introduces the core interaction loop before the main world opens up. It is also where Ironman-style account choices matter. Do not choose an Ironman variant just because it sounds prestigious; it changes trading, Grand Exchange access, assistance, drops, and long-term planning.
3. Pick Goals, Not a Perfect Route
OSRS is too wide for one beginner path to fit everyone.
A new account can quest, skill, fight, trade, explore, socialize, play free-to-play, buy membership, try mobile, or chase niche account builds. Start with goals you can understand: unlock a transport option, finish a small quest line, raise a skill for a requirement, learn safe combat, or build enough bank value to replace gear.
4. Use Quests as Unlocks
Quests are not just story checkboxes.
Quests can reward experience, items, access to regions, minigames, miniquests, and longer storylines. As of July 8, 2026, the OSRS Wiki listed 181 quests as of June 30, 2026, with The Blood Moon Rises as the newest quest. That count can change, so use it as dated context, not a permanent promise.
5. Train Skills Around What They Unlock
Level numbers matter most when they open something useful.
Current official materials list 24 OSRS skills, including Sailing, with 15 free-to-play skills and 9 members-only skills. Instead of grinding a random method because it is popular, ask what the next level unlocks for your account: a quest requirement, a teleport, a production chain, a combat prayer, a minigame, a clue step, or a region.
6. Keep Combat Flexible Early
Melee, Ranged, Magic, Prayer, and equipment all matter.
OSRS combat is built around stats, weapons, armour, spells, prayers, and encounter rules. Early on, learn how attack styles affect experience, how prayers drain, what your gear actually boosts, and when a monster asks for a different approach. Exact boss gear, raid setups, and PvP switches change too much for a beginner guide to freeze in place.
7. Respect the Membership Boundary
Free-to-play is real, but membership changes the map.
Official membership materials describe member access to additional skills, regions, quests, bosses, bank slots, player-owned houses, member worlds, and other content. Prices, bundles, regional terms, store behavior, and membership value can change, so review current terms before buying.
8. Understand Bonds Before Spending or Grinding for One
Old School Bonds live in Old School RuneScape’s economy.
Official Bonds materials say Old School Bonds can be traded in OSRS and redeemed for membership or name change cooldown bypasses. They are not RuneScape Bonds for RuneScape 3 currency or Keys. Bond prices are market-sensitive, so avoid any guide promising a fixed grind time or a guaranteed path to one.
9. Learn the Grand Exchange Without Trusting One Price
Guide prices are estimates, not guarantees.
The Grand Exchange matches buy and sell offers, and its guide prices are approximate values based on trade history. Low-volume items can be misleading, updates can move prices, and Jagex can intervene when manipulation is involved. Check live prices before buying gear, investing, flipping, or judging a money method.
10. Use Mobile for the Right Tasks
Cross-platform does not mean every activity feels equal.
Official mobile pages support the same account across PC and mobile with a mobile-optimised interface. That makes mobile useful for lower-risk routines, bank management, casual skilling, and checking progress. Before doing dangerous PvP, new bosses, risky quest segments, or expensive trades on mobile, make sure the interface and connection feel reliable.
11. Separate Leagues From the Main Game
Seasonal rules can teach habits that do not carry over.
Leagues are temporary OSRS variants with altered rules such as area restrictions, boosted experience, tasks, relics or pacts, and separate progress. Rewards and points have their own rules, and the active League state changes over time. Do not use Leagues XP rates, relic power, or task routes as main-game advice.
12. Read Official News Before Big Commitments
OSRS is old-school in style, not frozen in time.
June 2026 updates include Bank Tags for mobile and the official client, Leagues VI reward tweaks, Sailing changes, Slayer unlocks, Grand Exchange-adjacent item value changes, Wilderness death-rule changes, and The Blood Moon Rises. That is enough churn to make stale exact advice risky.
Account Modes and Membership
- Standard accounts are the best default - They let you trade, use the Grand Exchange normally, learn from other players, and recover from mistakes more easily.
- Ironman is a commitment - It changes economy, gathering, quest prep, and bossing assumptions. Start it because you want self-sufficiency, not because it sounds like the “real” way to play.
- Free-to-play is useful for learning - It lets you test the interface, basic combat, early quests, banking, and the economy before paying.
- Membership expands decisions - More skills, quests, regions, bosses, minigames, and bank space also mean more ways to get distracted.
- Bonds are economy items - Their price can move, so do not build a beginner plan around a fixed GP target from an old price guide.
- Steam, mobile, and Jagex account flows need current checks - Store purchases, linked characters, and account security can matter more than a guide can cover safely.
Skills, Quests, and Combat
- Open the skills tab often - Use it to understand what each skill unlocks rather than only watching XP go up.
- Pair skills when possible - Gathering and production skills often feed each other, but exact efficient pairings are account- and patch-dependent.
- Quest before grinding blindly - Many quests grant access, XP, or quality-of-life unlocks that can change what training makes sense.
- Read requirements before starting long quests - Story series can have prior quest, item, combat, travel, or skill gates.
- Keep a basic combat kit you can replace - Learning monsters, prayers, and switches is easier when a death is not financially crushing.
- Check death rules before risky content - Wilderness, PvP worlds, Hardcore status, quest instances, and new content can all have different consequences.
- Treat new bosses as volatile - Rewards, mechanics, and recommended setups are especially sensitive after launch and hotfixes.
- Avoid copying max-efficiency methods early - Efficient routes often assume teleports, gold, quests, diaries, membership, plugins, or game knowledge you may not have yet.
Economy, Mobile, and Live Updates
- Use buy and sell offers as information - A listed guide price is only the start of a market check.
- Do not risk your whole bank on one trade - Updates, speculation, and low-volume items can punish overconfidence.
- Bank before experimenting - Keep extra supplies and valuables out of your inventory when testing dangerous content.
- Use Bank Tags or organization tools once available - Official Bank Tags reached mobile and the official client in the June 17, 2026 update, so bank organization is now part of the supported client workflow.
- Check official news after breaks - If you return after months away, assume skills, quests, death systems, mobile UI, events, or rewards may have changed.
- Watch temporary content dates - Leagues, seasonal events, surveys, reward shops, and PvP rota details are not permanent main-game anchors.
- Refresh money-making advice the same day - A profitable method can collapse after price shifts, bot pressure, drop-rate updates, or new content.
- Refresh mobile advice after client updates - UI improvements can make old screenshots, plugin comparisons, and tap layouts inaccurate.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Separate OSRS progress | RS3 and OSRS profiles do not share stats/items/quests | Follow OSRS-specific guides |
| Tutorial Island choices | Account mode can reshape the whole account | Choose Ironman only deliberately |
| Skill unlocks | Levels matter when they open content | Train toward requirements, not random numbers |
| Quest rewards | Quests can unlock XP, regions, items, and stories | Read requirements before committing |
| Membership boundary | Members and F2P have different content access | Check current benefits before paying |
| Grand Exchange offers | Buy/sell prices move with the market | Check live offers before trading |
| Bonds | Membership item tied to OSRS economy | Do not assume fixed grind times |
| Mobile cross-play | Same account can continue on mobile | Use mobile first on lower-risk tasks |
| Leagues rules | Temporary servers alter progression | Keep Leagues advice separate |
| Polling limits | Some updates bypass normal polls | Read official news, not only old poll results |
| Death rules | PvP, Wilderness, Hardcore, and instances differ | Check risk before entering |
| Live patches | Quests, skills, bosses, economy, and UI change | Refresh exact advice often |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not use RuneScape 3 advice for OSRS - Different combat, economy, skills, quests, and update assumptions can send you in the wrong direction.
-
Do not choose Ironman casually - It blocks normal trading and Grand Exchange play, which changes almost every beginner shortcut.
-
Do not grind without a reason - A level goal is better when it unlocks a quest, item, teleport, diary, activity, or combat tool.
-
Do not buy membership from stale value claims - Check current prices, bundles, store terms, and your actual goals first.
-
Do not trust exact money makers from old guides - Grand Exchange prices, demand, drop values, and update effects can change quickly.
-
Do not follow quest steps from memory after an update - New quests, reworks, requirements, and known issues can change the safe route.
-
Do not treat Leagues as normal progression - Temporary boosts and relic-style systems do not describe main-game pacing.
-
Do not do risky content on mobile until comfortable - Practice the interface before PvP, dangerous quests, or boss attempts.
-
Do not ignore official news after returning - OSRS may look familiar while client features, skills, rewards, and balance have changed.
-
Do not put your full bank into one item or gear setup - Economy shifts and deaths are easier to absorb when your risk is spread out.
