Pokemon Black Version, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, is a Nintendo DS RPG about starting in Unova, raising a Pokemon team, battling Gyms and Trainers, facing Team Plasma, challenging the Pokemon League, and trading with compatible versions for broader collection goals.
This guide is for a first playthrough or a returning-player refresh. It does not include a full walkthrough, Gym-by-Gym route, exact encounter table, Battle Subway plan, legendary route, Dream World route, Global Link guide, or modern transfer guide in this beginner guide.
Essential Tips
1. Build Around Unova, Not Around Old Favorites
The main story mostly pushes you toward newly introduced Pokemon.
Pokemon Black is a fresh-region game. Expect the main route to teach you Unova’s Pokemon, abilities, moves, and battle formats before older species become a bigger postgame concern. Catch and test new options instead of waiting for a familiar Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh favorite to solve the story.
2. Pick Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott for the Run You Want
Your starter changes your early rival matchups, but it should not become your whole team.
Choose the starter you want to use, then start filling gaps quickly. Bianca and Cheren are recurring rivals, and your choice affects what they bring against you. A starter is your first reliable partner, not a reason to ignore every early-route catch.
3. Catch More Than One Early Pokemon
Route battles become smoother when your party has backup roles.
After the catching tutorial, use the early routes to build a small bench. Even simple early Pokemon can help spread experience, absorb hits, weaken wild Pokemon for captures, and keep your starter from being your only answer to every Trainer.
4. Read Move Categories, Not Just Move Types
In Generation V, physical and special damage are decided by the individual move.
Do not assume every move of a type uses the same attacking stat. Check whether a move is physical, special, or status, then match it to the Pokemon using it. Four move slots are tight, so replace duplicate attacks with coverage or utility that solves a real problem.
5. Use Reusable TMs Aggressively, But Still Intentionally
Black and White changed TMs from single-use items to reusable tools.
That makes experimentation less punishing than older Pokemon games. Teach useful coverage when it helps your team now, but still avoid filling every moveset with redundant attacks. Reusable does not mean every Pokemon needs the same TM.
6. Do Not Overbuild Around HMs
HMs matter, but the main story has lighter HM pressure than some older entries.
For this game, Cut is the only HM required to finish the main storyline, and HMs are not Badge-gated for field use in the same way as older games. Keep field utility available, but do not wreck your best battle movesets just to prepare for every possible optional obstacle.
7. Respect Seasons
Unova’s calendar can change what you see and where you can go.
Black and White use monthly seasons. Some Pokemon appear more often in particular seasons, and some areas can depend on season-specific access. If something seems missing, mark it for later instead of assuming the route is wrong.
8. Keep Several Pokemon Battle-Ready
Rotation and Triple Battle systems reward more than one good lead.
Pokemon Black especially showcases Rotation Battles, where the active matchup can change quickly. Even outside those fights, a balanced party gives you safer switches, better status options, and more answers to Gym, Plasma, and League fights.
9. Treat Online Features as Historical Unless Reconfirmed
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and the Generation V Dream World are not current planning pillars.
Offline story play remains the core experience, but official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection services for DS titles were discontinued in 2014, and the Dream World also closed. Do not plan around GTS, Random Matchup, online Mystery Gift, Global Link, or Dream World rewards unless a current, legal, and safe method has been confirmed for the exact hardware you are using.
10. Plan Collection Around Version and Hardware Limits
Pokemon Black cannot be treated as a one-cartridge completion path.
Reshiram is tied to Pokemon Black and Zekrom to Pokemon White, with additional version differences beyond that. If you care about completion or later transfers, track the compatible game, local hardware, Bank/Transporter state, and Pokemon HOME Premium requirement before investing hours in a collection route.
Unova Progression Habits
- Talk to people before leaving towns: Key items, tutorials, route hints, and system explanations are often placed around towns and Pokemon Centers.
- Heal before Trainer-heavy routes: Trainer lines of sight and story fights can stack up faster than wild encounters.
- Catch to learn the region: New Pokemon, abilities, and move pools are part of the game’s learning curve.
- Mark seasonal leads for later: If a path or encounter seems season-dependent, keep moving and return when the season changes.
- Separate main story from postgame cleanup: Older Pokemon, full Pokedex planning, Battle Subway goals, and optional legendary routing deserve their own pass.
- Save before major story beats: Rival fights, Team Plasma scenes, Gym challenges, and legendary encounters are easier to handle when you can retry cleanly.
Battle and Team Habits
| Situation | Good Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| New Pokemon | Check type, ability, and move category | Stats and move icons matter as much as level |
| New route | Rotate more than one usable battler | Keeps the starter from soaking all experience |
| New TM | Teach it when it solves a real matchup gap | TMs are reusable, but movesets are still limited |
| Tough fight | Review type coverage before grinding | A better switch or move can matter more than a few levels |
| Status pressure | Carry cures and switch carefully | Burn, poison, sleep, freeze, paralysis, confusion, and flinch can swing fights |
| Rotation Battle | Prepare multiple front-line answers | The active Pokemon can change without a normal switch rhythm |
| Evolution choice | Check upcoming moves before evolving | Some evolved forms learn moves on different schedules |
| Capture target | Lower HP without knocking it out | Catching needs control, not just raw damage |
TMs, HMs, and Field Utility
| Tool | What To Do |
|---|---|
| TMs | Use them more freely than in older games, because they are reusable in Black and White |
| HMs | Keep needed field moves available, but do not turn a good attacker into an all-purpose utility slot by default |
| Cut | Plan for it in the main story, then treat optional utility separately |
| Move Reminder | Save Heart Scales until a Pokemon clearly needs a missed level-up move |
| Move Deleter | Use the Mistralton City option to clean up HM or unwanted moves when the route allows |
| Four move slots | Avoid stacking four attacks that all solve the same matchup |
| Status moves | Keep useful support moves when they help captures, boss fights, or safe switching |
Trading and Service Caveats
Pokemon Black’s collection and connectivity features are split between local/hardware behavior and discontinued online services. Use this checklist before following any completion or transfer plan:
- Story play: the main game remains an offline RPG; Nintendo’s Wi-Fi shutdown does not stop offline play.
- Local communication: IR and local wireless features depend on compatible hardware, cartridges, and nearby players.
- Online DS services: official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection features for DS/DSi titles ended in 2014, including online play, matchmaking, GTS-style exchange, and free online downloads such as Mystery Gifts.
- Dream World and Global Link: treat Generation V online rewards and customization as closed unless a feature is currently available on your setup.
- Version completion: expect trades with compatible versions for full collection goals; do not rely on Pokemon Black alone.
- Modern transfer plans: check Poke Transporter, Pokemon Bank, Pokemon HOME Premium, installed software, and service status before promising any Pokemon Black-to-modern-game route.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Waiting for old favorites instead of using Unova Pokemon - The main story is built around learning the new regional roster.
-
Letting the starter carry every fight - Rival, Gym, Team Plasma, Rotation, and League battles are safer with a real party.
-
Ignoring physical and special move icons - A move can match a Pokemon’s type but still use the wrong attacking stat.
-
Treating reusable TMs like random filler - TMs can be reused, but each Pokemon still has only four move slots.
-
Making an unnecessary HM mule too early - Field utility matters, but main-story HM pressure is lighter than in some older games.
-
Forgetting seasons exist - Some Unova access and encounters can be season-sensitive.
-
Skipping early captures - Early Pokemon give you backup damage, capture control, and safer switches.
-
Planning around online features from old guides - Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and Dream World-era features are historical unless reconfirmed.
-
Assuming Black catches everything alone - Version differences and trades are part of completion planning.
-
Following transfer advice without checking services - Bank, Transporter, HOME Premium, and installed 3DS software status can change or vary by player.
