Pokemon Diamond Version Beginner Tips - Sinnoh, HMs, and Underground Guide

Beginner tips for Pokemon Diamond Version covering Sinnoh progression, starters, physical/special moves, TMs, HMs, Poketch, Underground, trading, and service caveats.

On this page

Pokemon Diamond Version, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, is an original Nintendo DS RPG about exploring Sinnoh, choosing Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup, building a Pokemon team, challenging Gyms and the Pokemon League, facing Team Galactic, and using DS-era local and online communication systems.

This guide is scoped to Pokemon Diamond Version on Nintendo DS, not Pokemon Brilliant Diamond. It does not include a full walkthrough, Gym-by-Gym teams, exact encounter tables, event Pokemon routes, Pokedex checklist, modern transfer guide, or Grand Underground advice in this beginner guide.

Difficulty caveat: GameFAQs user stats rate Diamond as “Just Right” and around 56 hours. Treat it as approachable, but not tiny; the campaign gives you enough systems that good habits save time.

Essential Tips

1. Treat This as the DS Original

Pokemon Diamond Version is not the same ruleset as Brilliant Diamond.

Use original Diamond/Pearl information for TMs, HMs, the Underground, Pal Park, Wi-Fi, GTS, and event availability. Remake-specific advice can point you toward mechanics that do not exist, work differently, or need different hardware assumptions.

2. Pick Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup, Then Build Around Gaps

Your starter is important, but Sinnoh is a full-party RPG.

Choose the starter you want to use, then start catching and rotating backups. Diamond has a long badge route, Team Galactic fights, the Pokemon League, and postgame systems, so one overleveled starter should not be your entire plan.

3. Check the Move Category, Not Just the Move Type

Generation IV changed physical and special damage to be move-based.

A Pokemon can have the right type of attack but the wrong attacking stat for that move. When you are choosing between two moves, check category, type, Power Points, and what role the Pokemon fills before replacing anything.

4. Spend Single-Use TMs Carefully

Diamond is an older Pokemon game where TMs are not reusable.

Do not teach a valuable TM just because a Pokemon can learn it. Save stronger coverage or utility TMs for Pokemon you expect to keep using, and treat every four-move slot as a real tradeoff.

5. Plan HMs Before Long Trips

HMs are reusable, but field use is tied to Gym Badge progress and HM moves are awkward to remove.

Keep field utility available without damaging every good battler’s moveset. Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, Defog, Rock Smash, Waterfall, and Rock Climb all matter as field-move concepts, but exact route needs and best carriers should be confirmed before a full walkthrough.

6. Use the Poketch as a Travel Tool

The Touch Screen is part of the DS-era flow.

The Poketch sits on the Touch Screen and gains apps during the adventure. When the game gives you a new app or touch-screen shortcut, test it before moving on; small utilities are easy to forget once routes get longer.

7. Prepare for Coverage, Not Just Gym Labels

Sinnoh’s Gyms and Elite Four have type themes, but type labels are not the whole fight.

Use type coverage, status control, healing items, and backup Pokemon instead of preparing for only one enemy type. A balanced party handles route Trainers, Galactic fights, and League battles more reliably than a narrow counter team.

8. Keep Super Contests Separate From League Progress

Contests use different systems than badge progression.

Poffins, accessories, Visual rounds, Dance rounds, and Acting rounds are their own lane. It is fine to train or dress up a contest Pokemon, but do not confuse contest prep with a Gym-ready team.

9. Explore the Original Underground, Not the Grand Underground

Diamond’s Underground is a DS local-wireless side system.

Use it for mining, fossils, Secret Bases, traps, flags, and local play expectations. Do not expect Brilliant Diamond’s Grand Underground Pokemon Hideaways or remake-style systems in this version.

10. Treat Online and Transfer Advice as Conditional

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is shut down, and Diamond is not a direct Poke Transporter source.

Offline play remains intact, but official DS online features such as GTS-style exchange and Mystery Gift-style downloads are historical. For modern collection plans, check Pal Park, any Generation V transfer step, Poke Transporter, Pokemon Bank, Pokemon HOME Premium, installed software, and service status before moving anything.

Sinnoh Progression Habits

  1. Talk to NPCs in every town: The manual explicitly points players toward useful information in buildings and houses.
  2. Heal before pushing through route chains: Pokemon Centers fully restore HP, PP, and fainted or statused Pokemon.
  3. Use the PC instead of forcing one party: Carry six Pokemon, but rotate stored Pokemon when your current team has bad coverage or too many utility moves.
  4. Check Poke Marts after new Badges: Town inventories and Badge progress can affect what you can buy.
  5. Separate story progress from cleanup: Pal Park, the Battle Zone, Legendary routes, swarms, Poke Radar, event Pokemon, and Pokedex completion should wait for confirmed routes.
  6. Save before major story moments: Team Galactic scenes, Gym attempts, Legendary encounters, and Pokemon League attempts are easier to recover from with a clean save.

Battle and Team Habits

SituationGood HabitWhy It Helps
New moveCheck physical, special, or status categoryDamage now depends on the individual move category
New PokemonCompare stats, type, ability, and roleA good type alone does not make a good team slot
Long routeBring more than one trained battlerFainted leads, bad matchups, and status effects are easier to absorb
Gym prepBuild broad coverage and backup plansType themes do not cover every threat cleanly
TM useSave rare TMs for lasting team membersOriginal Diamond TMs are single-use
HM useKeep field moves available without overloading one attackerHMs are reusable but moveset space is limited
Capture targetLower HP carefully and keep balls stockedCollection progress needs control, not only damage
League prepReview items, moves, and roles before grindingCleaner coverage can matter more than a few extra levels

TMs, HMs, and Field Utility

ToolWhat To Do
TMsTreat each TM as a one-time decision until exact duplicate sources are checked
HMsUse them as reusable field tools, but remember they are hard to remove normally
Badge locksExpect field use to depend on certain Gym Badges
Cut / Rock SmashKeep basic obstacle-clearing available when routes start asking for it
Surf / WaterfallPlan water travel around story progress and route planning
FlyUse it as a return-travel convenience once available
Defog / Rock ClimbTreat exact route needs as separate from battle movesets
Move slotsAvoid teaching four attacks that solve the same problem

Underground and Side Systems

The original Underground is useful, but it is not mandatory to solve every story problem. Treat it as a side lane for mining, Secret Bases, traps, flags, spheres, fossils, and local play. If you are playing without nearby DS players, expect some local-wireless features to need separate planning before they become part of a completion plan.

Super Contests are another side lane. Poffins and accessories help contest presentation, while Visual, Dance, and Acting rounds reward different preparation than Gym battles. Keep contest Pokemon and League Pokemon organized around their actual jobs.

Trading, Events, and Service Caveats

Use this checklist before chasing completion or transfer goals:

  1. Main story: Offline Sinnoh play is the core experience and is not blocked by Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection shutdown.
  2. Local trading and battling: Local DS wireless depends on compatible cartridges, hardware, and nearby players.
  3. Version completion: Diamond has Diamond/Pearl differences, so full collection planning can require trades or compatible games.
  4. Pal Park: GBA-to-Diamond migration is one-way, requires National Pokedex progress, and has restrictions such as HM moves, Mail, and a daily six-Pokemon limit per GBA Game Pak.
  5. Official DS online: Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection ended in 2014, so GTS-style exchange, online battles, and Mystery Gift-style downloads need a current setup before use.
  6. Modern transfer: Official Poke Transporter compatibility starts with Black, White, Black 2, White 2, and Virtual Console titles, not Diamond directly.
  7. Pokemon Bank: Bank and Poke Transporter are no longer available for new downloads, Bank-to-HOME transfer needs Pokemon HOME Premium, and service status should be refreshed before relying on it.
  8. Events: Do not plan around old event Pokemon, Mystery Gifts, or key items unless you already have a legal current route.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Soloing every fight with the starter - A one-Pokemon plan leaves you exposed when matchups, status, HMs, or longer routes stack up.

  2. Teaching a rare TM immediately - Single-use TMs are easy to waste on a Pokemon you stop using.

  3. Filling a main attacker with too many HMs - Field moves help progress, but battle movesets still need coverage and utility.

  4. Ignoring physical and special move categories - A move can match the Pokemon’s type while using the weaker attacking stat.

  5. Skipping Pokemon Center and Poke Mart stops - Long route chains are harder when HP, PP, status cures, and Poke Balls are low.

  6. Preparing for only a Gym’s advertised type - Coverage and backup roles matter when teams do not stay perfectly narrow.

  7. Leaving useful catches in the PC forever - Rotating Pokemon keeps backup roles ready before a bad matchup forces them in.

  8. Treating contest prep like League prep - Poffins, accessories, and contest rounds reward a different plan than Gym battles.

  9. Ignoring the Underground after unlocking it - Mining and Secret Base systems can be useful side progress when handled in their original DS form.

  10. Migrating GBA Pokemon without reading the warnings - Pal Park migration is permanent and has restrictions, so check the in-game prompts before confirming.
