Pokemon Sun Beginner Tips - Alola Trials, Z-Moves, and Service Caveats

Beginner tips for Pokemon Sun covering Alola trials, starters, Totem Pokemon, Z-Moves, Poke Ride, Festival Plaza, Pokemon Bank, events, and 3DS service caveats.

On this page

Pokemon Sun, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, is an original Nintendo 3DS RPG about exploring Alola, choosing Rowlet, Litten, or Popplio, catching and training Pokemon, completing Island Challenge Trials, facing kahunas, stopping Team Skull, and becoming Champion through Alola’s newly founded Pokemon League.

This guide is scoped to Pokemon Sun, not Pokemon Moon, Pokemon Ultra Sun, Pokemon Ultra Moon, the Special Demo Version, old event distributions, or a full Pokemon Bank/HOME transfer guide. It avoids exact encounter tables, version-exclusive checklists, event routes, and transfer instructions in this beginner guide.

Difficulty caveat: GameFAQs user stats rate Pokemon Sun as Easy/Just Right and about 61 hours. It is approachable, but the systems stack up, so good habits matter more than rushing.

Essential Tips

1. Treat This as Original Pokemon Sun

Pokemon Sun is not Pokemon Moon or Pokemon Ultra Sun.

Use original Sun/Moon information for trials, Totem Pokemon, routes, Poke Ride, Z-Moves, Festival Plaza, Poke Pelago, and Bank compatibility. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon follow an alternate version of Alola and include Pokemon, forms, and Z-Moves that original Sun/Moon cannot use.

2. Pick Rowlet, Litten, or Popplio, Then Build a Real Party

Your starter starts the journey; it should not be the whole team.

Alola asks you to handle wild Pokemon, Trainer battles, trials, Totem Pokemon, kahunas, Team Skull, Aether story fights, and the League. Catch backups early and train roles, not just favorites.

3. Learn the Trial Structure Instead of Looking for Gyms

Alola progression is built around trials and grand trials.

Trials can ask for more than a straight Trainer battle, and Totem Pokemon are designed as set-piece fights. After clearing island trials, grand trials against kahunas mark your progress to the next major step.

4. Save Z-Moves for Turns That Matter

A Z-Move is powerful, but it is a once-per-battle resource.

Do not fire it into a weak target just because the button is available. Hold it for Totem Pokemon, kahunas, dangerous story battles, or a matchup where a clean knockout changes the fight.

5. Respect Totem Pokemon and SOS Allies

Totem fights are not ordinary wild battles.

Totem Pokemon can have aura boosts and call allies, so prepare for more than one opposing Pokemon on the field. Bring healing, status control, and enough trained party members to keep pressure on the main threat.

6. Use Poke Ride as Your Field-Progress Tool

Sun is not an HM-management game in the old style.

Ride Pokemon open routes and field access without joining your battle party. When the story gives you a new Ride option, revisit blocked paths before assuming you need a move slot or a different team member.

7. Let Rotom Dex Tools Help, But Do Not Turn Them Into a Checklist Yet

QR Scanner, Poke Finder, and Pokedex tools are useful side support.

Use them to learn habitats, inspect areas, and break up the main route, but do not build a completion plan from memory. Day/night, version, and service details need a confirmed Pokedex pass.

8. Keep Festival Plaza and Poke Pelago in Their Own Lane

Side systems help, but they are not the main story.

Festival Plaza supports battle/trade-style communication and plaza activities, while Poke Pelago gives boxed Pokemon useful side activity. Treat internet-dependent Festival Plaza behavior as limited by the 3DS online shutdown unless a feature is currently available on your setup.

9. Remember That Sun and Moon Handle Time Differently

Pokemon Sun follows the 3DS clock normally; Moon is offset by 12 hours.

That matters for day/night behavior and any time-sensitive catch plan. This guide is for Sun, so do not copy Moon timing advice without checking how it maps back to your system clock.

10. Check Service Status Before Chasing Events or Transfers

Old 3DS-era online assumptions are no longer safe.

Nintendo 3DS online play and online communication functions ended on April 8, 2024, and the 3DS eShop no longer allows new purchases or demo downloads. Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter remain exceptions for now, but Bank/HOME transfers depend on installed software, app versions, accounts, and Pokemon HOME Premium.

Alola Progression Habits

  1. Talk to NPCs in each town: Alola introduces systems through characters, buildings, and route gates, not only battle tutorials.
  2. Catch before you specialize: A varied box makes trials and kahuna fights easier to solve without grinding one Pokemon too hard.
  3. Heal before trial areas: Totem fights can stack pressure quickly, especially when allies join the opposing side.
  4. Keep your party’s roles visible: Carry damage, status, and defensive pivots instead of six Pokemon that solve the same matchup.
  5. Revisit paths after new Ride access: Poke Ride is the field-progression layer, so newly opened paths can hide items or optional areas.
  6. Separate story progress from Pokedex cleanup: Version exclusives, time-of-day encounters, QR Scanner behavior, events, and Bank transfers deserve their own checklist.
  7. Save before major battles and gifts: Trials, grand trials, story scenes, Legendaries, and transfer pickups are easier to recover from with a clean save.

Battle and Team Habits

SituationGood HabitWhy It Helps
Starter choicePick the partner you want, then cover its weaknessesRowlet, Litten, and Popplio all need teammates
Trial prepBring more than one trained attackerTotem fights can call allies and punish one-Pokemon plans
Z-Move timingSave the Z-Move until a knockout or survival swing mattersYou only get one per battle
New PokemonCompare role, typing, ability, and movesA useful Alola team needs coverage, not only favorites
Long routeCarry healing and status answersBack-to-back route fights can drain PP and items
Kahuna battlePrepare broad coverageGrand trials are milestones, not casual route battles
Battle RoyalExpect odd targeting and free-for-all pressureFour-Trainer fights do not play like normal one-on-one battles
Boxed PokemonUse Poke Pelago and PC rotation deliberatelyBackup Pokemon are more useful when they keep progressing

Z-Moves, Rides, and Side Systems

SystemWhat To Do
Z-Ring and Z-CrystalsMatch the crystal to a Pokemon that knows a move of that type before relying on the Z-Move
Once-per-battle Z-MovesSpend the move on key threats, not the first safe target
Totem PokemonExpect aura boosts and ally calls until the specific trial is checked
Poke RideUse Ride access to solve field obstacles instead of waiting for HMs
Rotom DexUse map and Pokedex support, but use exact habitats only for completion routing
QR ScannerTreat habitat and scan behavior as useful, not as a complete encounter guide
Poke FinderUse photo spots as optional side activity, not story progression
Festival PlazaUse local/offline-supported behavior where available; treat internet features as service-sensitive
Poke PelagoLet boxed Pokemon gather value while you continue the story
Hyper TrainingSave level-100 optimization and Bottle Cap planning for postgame planning

Version, Demo, Events, and Service Caveats

Use this checklist before chasing completion or transfers:

  1. Pokemon Sun scope: Use original Sun/Moon data, not Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon route or feature changes.
  2. Moon timing: Moon runs 12 hours offset from the 3DS clock; Sun follows the 3DS clock conventionally.
  3. Ultra compatibility: Sun/Moon can trade and battle with Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, but original Sun/Moon cannot use Ultra-only Pokemon, forms, or Z-Moves.
  4. Version completion: Expect trades or compatible games for a complete collection; do not rely on an single full exclusive list.
  5. Special Demo: The demo was a separate download tied to Ash-Greninja transfer; new 3DS demo downloads are no longer available through eShop.
  6. Old events: Do not plan around Mystery Gift, serial-code, Wonder Card, or event Pokemon access unless you already have a current legal route.
  7. 3DS online shutdown: Online play and online communication functions for Nintendo 3DS software ended on April 8, 2024; offline play remains available.
  8. Local behavior: StreetPass-style local communication is separate from online services, but any Sun-specific local trade/battle behavior still needs hardware setup.
  9. Pokemon Bank: Bank is a direct compatible app for Pokemon Sun if already installed and updated, and it is currently no-cost.
  10. Poke Transporter: Transporter feeds older supported games into Bank; it is not the direct app for depositing Pokemon Sun Pokemon.
  11. Pokemon HOME: Moving from Bank to HOME requires Pokemon HOME Premium.
  12. Downloads: Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter are no longer available for new download, so do not start a transfer plan without checking the actual 3DS.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Soloing trials with the starter - Totem fights and ally calls can overwhelm a one-Pokemon plan.

  2. Using the Z-Move on the first weak target - Spending the once-per-battle option too early leaves you without a swing turn.

  3. Ignoring the ally in a Totem battle - Letting support Pokemon act freely can turn a stable fight into an item drain.

  4. Forgetting to revisit paths after a new Ride - Poke Ride opens field access that older Pokemon habits might make you overlook.

  5. Filling every party slot with the same role - Repeated typings and move coverage make kahuna and story fights harder than needed.

  6. Treating Festival Plaza internet features as guaranteed - 3DS online services have ended outside current exceptions, so in-game online menus may not behave like old guides describe.

  7. Trying to download the Special Demo now - New 3DS eShop demo downloads are closed, so Ash-Greninja plans need an already-downloaded demo and current setup.

  8. Moving Pokemon before checking Bank and HOME requirements - Installed apps, app versions, accounts, and HOME Premium matter before any transfer attempt.

  9. Following Ultra Sun directions in original Sun - Ultra-only routes, Pokemon, forms, and Z-Moves can send you looking for things your game cannot use.

  10. Building a Pokedex route from one list - Version, time-of-day, event, and service details belong in a completion guide.
