Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness Beginner Tips - Snagging, Purifying, and Orre

Beginner tips for Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness covering Eevee, Double Battles, Shadow Pokemon, snagging, purification, Poke Spots, and Orre.

On this page

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is a Nintendo GameCube RPG developed by Genius Sonority and published by Nintendo. It sends you back to Orre with Eevee as your first partner, then builds the adventure around Double Battles, Cipher, Shadow Pokemon, the Snag Machine, purification, and the mystery of Shadow Lugia.

This is a beginner guide, but the game itself expects careful Double Battle planning and can punish a failed Shadow Pokemon capture. The tips below clarify that first route without implying an easy campaign.

This guide is for the GameCube adventure, not Pokemon Colosseum, not handheld gym progression, not a randomizer, and not emulator-specific behavior. For a first clean playthrough, catch what the game lets you catch, keep your team stable, and make purification part of the route.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Eevee as a Starting Point, Not the Whole Plan

Eevee gets you moving, but Orre asks for a team.

Pokemon XD starts you with Eevee, then sends you through towns, labs, hideouts, and Shadow Pokemon captures. Do not over-invest in a one-Pokemon plan. Important fights are easier when both active slots have useful moves, enough HP, and a clear role.

Choose Eevee’s evolution around what your team lacks, not just the form you usually like. If a snagged Pokemon already covers one role, another evolution may help more.

2. Build for Double Battles From the Start

Most fights are not one-on-one.

Double Battles change basic Pokemon habits. You need two active Pokemon that can work together, not one carry and one passenger. Spread experience, avoid doubling up on the same weakness, and keep safe damage, status, and type coverage available.

Target order matters. Remove the Pokemon that creates immediate danger, blocks a snag attempt, or threatens both partners. When a Shadow Pokemon appears, control the field long enough to catch it.

3. Keep Poke Balls Stocked

A Shadow Pokemon encounter can appear during normal story progress.

The Snag Machine lets you catch Shadow Pokemon from opposing Trainers, but only if you have balls ready. Once shops open reliable ball access, keep a deeper stock than you would in a normal route.

Carry healing too. Snag attempts can drag fights out, and a safe capture turn is usually worth more than a fast knockout.

4. Use Status and Chip Damage Carefully

Snagging rewards control more than brute force.

Shadow Pokemon need to be weakened, but careless attacks can remove the exact Pokemon you came to save. Use status moves, resisted hits, and safer partner actions. If the other opponent is dealing heavy damage, remove or disable it first.

Later Double Battles can combine strong attacks, protection moves, and disruptive Shadow moves. A prepared team with status support has more room to catch the target without losing the fight.

5. Purify as You Go

Purification is progression, not cleanup.

Shadow Pokemon become more useful when their hearts open, moves return, and stored experience catches up. Carry some in your party, battle with them, use available tools, and check readiness instead of letting every snag sit untouched.

The Relic Stone and colognes matter before the Purify Chamber becomes your main engine. Once the chamber is available, check sets, rotate Pokemon, and avoid leaving it empty while you keep battling through Orre.

6. Learn the Purify Chamber Before You Need Shadow Lugia

The chamber is a type puzzle with long-term payoff.

Each chamber set places a Shadow Pokemon in the middle and non-Shadow Pokemon around it. Better type relationships around the circle improve the set and speed purification. You do not need a perfect route for a normal playthrough; arrange a strong circle, then let the chamber work while you continue the story.

Do not wait until the end to learn this system. Build full sets as your box grows. Shadow Lugia has special purification requirements, so a player who ignored every chamber slot will have extra work later.

7. Remember That Wild Pokemon Are Limited

Poke Spots are not normal tall grass.

Pokemon XD is not built around endless grass encounters. Wild Pokemon are tied to Poke Spots, bait, and alerts. Treat Poke Spots as side opportunities for team options and trades, not as a replacement for the Shadow Pokemon route.

When you get a Poke Spot alert, decide whether the detour is worth it before pushing deeper into a story area. If you are low on healing or balls, restock first.

8. Save Before Major Battles and Snag Attempts

A good save protects both progress and captures.

Pokemon XD allows menu saving, so use it. Save before boss rooms, long hideout sequences, new major locations, and fights where a Shadow Pokemon seems likely. This lets you recover from a failed capture, wrong knockout, or underprepared double battle without replaying too much.

Snagging and Battle Habits

Keep one reliable damage dealer and one control Pokemon ready when exploring enemy areas. The damage dealer clears non-Shadow threats; the control Pokemon uses status, safer attacks, or support while you line up the snag.

Watch the whole field before throwing balls. If the partner Pokemon can ruin the attempt, stabilize first. A clean snag often happens after you remove the partner, heal, then spend repeated ball turns on the Shadow Pokemon.

When a fight starts going badly, switch instead of forcing the catch. Losing the battle can undo the snag you were trying to secure. Your six-Pokemon party gives you room to rotate if backups are trained.

Purification Priorities

Your first goal is not to purify everything instantly. Keep a steady rotation: carry useful Shadow Pokemon, open their gauges through battles, use colognes when available, and move ready Pokemon through the Relic Stone or chamber process.

Once the Purify Chamber is active, fill sets whenever you can. Prioritize Pokemon you want to use, useful recovered moves, and type coverage. An empty center slot is wasted progress.

For the outer ring, start with simple type chains you understand. Stronger arrangements are faster, but a working set is better than an empty one. As your collection grows, improve old sets.

Poke Spots and Side Modes

Poke Spots give Pokemon XD some wild-catch flavor, but they are limited, alert-driven side content. Use them to widen options and support trades, then return to the Shadow Pokemon route.

Battle Bingo and Battle Sims are separate challenges, not replacements for story fundamentals. Use them when you want a break or extra battle practice, then keep the main playthrough centered on team balance, Double Battle control, snagging, and purification.

Multiplayer and Game Boy Advance link features belong in their own checklist. On original hardware, cables, compatible games, and save data matter, so keep connectivity setup separate from the single-player route.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Training only Eevee - Double Battles punish a team where the second active Pokemon cannot contribute.

  2. Entering Cipher areas with too few Poke Balls - Shadow Pokemon are the point of the route, and you need supplies when they appear.

  3. Knocking out Shadow Pokemon with heavy attacks - careful chip damage and status give you more capture attempts.

  4. Ignoring the non-Shadow partner in battle - the support enemy can ruin a snag attempt while you stare at the target.

  5. Leaving Shadow Pokemon boxed forever - purification unlocks value, moves, and experience that an untouched box cannot provide.

  6. Treating the Purify Chamber as optional clutter - the chamber saves time and becomes especially important for Shadow Lugia.

  7. Expecting normal wild encounters everywhere - Poke Spots are limited side systems, not the handheld tall-grass loop.

  8. Copying Pokemon Colosseum habits blindly - XD changes the starter, purification tools, Shadow behavior, side modes, and encounter structure.

  9. Saving only after long sequences - save before major fights so a failed snag or bad knockout is easy to recover from.
