Pushmo is a puzzle-platform game about turning a flat block picture into a climbable route. 1. Think in Steps, Not Blocks
Every block you move should create a place to stand, a place to jump from, or a way to reach the next pull. If you only look at the final child or goal, the puzzle can feel like a wall. Instead, break it into small ledges: ground to first shelf, first shelf to second shelf, then toward the top.
Before pulling anything, trace the climb with your eyes. Ask where Mallo can stand after the move. A block that looks important from the front may be useless if there is no landing beside it.
2. Use the Three-Step Limit as a Planning Tool
Many beginner mistakes come from treating a pull as simply “out” or “in.” Pushmo is more exact than that. One step can make a small ledge, two steps can set up a jump, and three steps can become a full platform or a wall that blocks another path.
When a puzzle gives you a large colored shape, do not automatically pull it all the way. Try to imagine whether one, two, or three spaces gives the next block enough room to matter. The best move is often the shortest pull that still lets you climb.
3. Learn Side-Pulls Early
A front pull is obvious: stand in front of a block and pull it toward you. A side-pull is the move that makes many later routes work. If Mallo can stand beside a block on a stable ledge, you may be able to slide that block outward while staying on the structure.
Treat side-pulls as a way to continue building after you have already climbed above the ground. If a block seems unreachable from the front, look for a side ledge that lets you adjust it from another angle.
4. Push Blocks Back In on Purpose
Pulling blocks out feels like progress, but pushing them back in is just as important. A block that helped you climb a lower section can get in the way later. Pushing it inward may open space, line up a side-pull, or let you reach a different colored shape.
When you are stuck halfway up, ask which earlier block has already done its job. If standing on it lets you push another piece into a better position, that backward-looking move may be the route forward.
5. Use Rewind Before You Reset
Pushmo gives you room to experiment. If a recent move trapped you, rewind first so you can keep the parts of the route that were working. A full reset is better when the whole structure has become unreadable or when you no longer remember why blocks are where they are.
This matters because puzzle-solving is memory. Rewinding a few moves teaches you what failed. Resetting every time can erase the useful shape you already discovered.
6. Read Colored Shapes as Connected Pieces
Blocks are not always single squares. A colored shape may move as a larger piece, and later puzzles use L-shapes, plus-shapes, squares, long pieces, and layered patterns. Before you pull, look at the whole connected shape and think about what its new outline will create.
This is especially useful in mural-style puzzles, where the picture can distract you. The art is charming, but the route is built from ledges, corners, heights, and gaps.
7. Treat Switches as Big State Changes
Colored switches can change every matching block at once, so stepping on one without a plan can scramble a good route. Before using a switch, check which blocks share that color and whether pulling all of them out helps or blocks your climb.
If a switch appears near the middle of a puzzle, it is usually there to solve a larger shape problem, not just to save one manual pull. Look for the section that becomes climbable only after several matching pieces move together.
8. Use Manholes to Think Across the Structure
Manholes act like shortcuts between parts of the Pushmo. They let Mallo reach an area that may be impossible to climb to directly, but they also make route order more important. A manhole is useful only if the destination side has the blocks arranged correctly.
Before jumping in, check whether you should pull or push something on the current side first. If you arrive at the other end with no platform, you probably used the shortcut too early.
9. Do Not Ignore Ladders and Safe Landings
Later puzzles can move you around the structure with ladders and other traversal aids. Use them to reposition Mallo, but keep watching where he can stand after each jump. A route is not solved just because you reached a higher area once.
Good Pushmo play is about repeatable footing. If a jump barely works but leaves you unable to interact with the next piece, look for a cleaner ledge.
10. Solve From the Bottom and the Top
Most puzzles start from the ground, but the goal often tells you what the final ledge must look like. After you understand the first few steps, look near the child or goal and ask what platform needs to exist directly below it.
Then work backward. Which block can become that final platform? Which ledge lets you reach that block? Which earlier pull creates that ledge? Alternating between bottom-up and top-down thinking keeps you from making a beautiful lower staircase that leads nowhere.
11. Save Exact Routes for True Roadblocks
A full walkthrough can finish a stage quickly, but it also skips the learning Pushmo is built around. When possible, use a small hint first: look for the missing side-pull, the switch color you ignored, or the block that needs to be pushed back in.
If you do use a route, replay the puzzle once afterward and explain the key idea to yourself. That turns a solved stage into a skill you can use again.
12. Use Pushmo Studio as Practice
Pushmo Studio is not only for making fancy pictures. Creating a simple puzzle teaches you why certain ledges work, why some shapes trap the player, and how QR-shared puzzles can become harder than the main lessons.
Start with a small structure and make sure there is a clean path from ground to goal. If your own puzzle is frustrating, it probably has too many full pulls, not enough side ledges, or no clear way to recover from a wrong move.
